“Well, in Whoville they say that the Grinch’s small heart grew three sizes that day. And then the true meaning of Christmas came though, and the Grinch found the strength of ten Grinches plus two.”
Credit where credit is due! This one’s sweet. Cookies for everyone, that’s the Christmas spirit, kiddo. Smile, Bernie, it’s a rare moment. Merry Christmas, everyone! <3
As several commenters predicted (but I wasn’t one of them), it looks like Shannon didn’t get any discipline for yesterday’s “bender” incident after all. Oh, well.
Hmm. Looking more closely, I see that Luann’s blouse is apparently undamaged. We must have skipped over the boring part where Luann made Shannon reweave it off-panel before they could have their baking session. Yeah! That’s the ticket! My story and I’m sticking to it.
Shannon is going to eat them all, because she’s a budding genius and if you don’t like her, you hate every kid in the world and I hope you’ve never had kids. I guess you don’t remember that you were a kid yourself once. Shannon is a precious little angel who you’re supposed to like, because the writers never portray her as being annoying. (I am being sarcastic. I hope Ben’s kids get cookies, too. The one with four arms will grab twice as many!)
Ah Shannon haters out there, must be a bit chagrined, suddenly Shannon shows love for Bernice, and names those in her corner in Luannverse she thinks are her family. INNOCENT LOVE! You know last I checked Christ, whom Christmas is celebrated for, at least on religious grounds, says love others as they would love oneself. Declaring otherwise about a drawn caricature of a small child might be just a touch hypocritical?
Aw, Shannon does have her moments. She even called her MISS Bernice. She does know how to be polite. Brad and Toni raised her right where it counts. She is thoughtful in wanting to make cookies for everyone, even Bernice-Who-Does-Not-Like-Kids.
The adults in this strip treat Shannon like she was the Bill Mumy kid in that twilight zone episode where he can do whatever he wants with just a thought.
I guess I shouldn’t blame them for not disciplining her. Who wants to go through life as a ‘Jack in the Box’?
Gotta love Shannon! She’s truly not a brat to be mean. She’s been allowed to run feral for too long, and needs constant scooping up and redirecting, as many kids do. Dear Fellow Readers, please don’t get too caught up here. Just enjoy her spontaneity and spark for life!
Oh, great! Now, we’re being propagandized with the dubious proposition that Shannon is in reality just a lovable if rambunctious kiddo. I ain’t buying it.
“You can decorate THREE cookies, Shannon, so that you can do an extra great job with them, and you can give them to whoever you decide to. Everyone else? We’ll just tell them that your present to them is that you’re leaving them alone!”
I actually made Christmas cookies yesterday – which was not hard at all. However, the decorating part ran into hours! And this was a pretty small batch, about 25 cookies. My wife and son finally pitched in and helped, which cut down the time. It was fun, and I can see how this can become a tradition.
Awwwwww….. precious child ♡♡♡. Bernice is not prepared for direct attacks of affection. This could traumatize her forever. One of those rare positive traumas, I hope. And Luann…. she see everything and smiles. Clever girl ♡.
Interesting, interesting…. Shannon does bring out almost as much in extreme reaction as Ann did. What’s more interesting is Bernice and how she’s modifying; a slow morph over the years from side-kick to having a fairly major arc (March to December and appear to continue for a while). Is she the “new Tiffany”? Ah well, at least Shannon got to make Hogswatch cookies and thought of the important people in her life. Will she likely eat most of the cookies, possibly, maybe even probably. Who cares, she’s child and making cookies is fun (I remember doing it as a young pohka long ago….).
Kids just like adults can be multi-faceted and I get that. But hugging Berenice is as impulsive as painting the couch. Shannon still needs more guidance and structure.
Depressed by the comments I saw yesterday about Shannon – and not having any real hope that G&K were going to resolve Shannon’s situation to anyone’s satisfaction today, I waited until late (what, 8:48 AM Mountain Time) to look at the strip.
One of the few times I regret not having looked at this one at 11:07 PM the night before.
I’m with Scarlet Shimmer, Trilogy, 1212 and a host of others who have consistently called out those who have an inexplicable level of hate for this ink-and-paint fictional character. I don’t know which were worse – calls for drugging, beating, eating, what have you, or the comparisons of a child to Hitler, Dracula and Hannibal Lector and other fictional characters.
Enough.
Hat’s off to Scarlet (I think it was) who also echos my feelings, that G&K really do need to resolve Shannon’s parental issues – Jonah already apparently written out of the strip; perhaps the only reason B&T don’t talk about it is because Brad is so baby-hungry, he’ll take what he can get (Shannon) and Toni is too, too, can’t think of a word for it, to confront her brother (who is likely not providing any financial support for Shannon’s 365/24/7 care).
And even beb had an interesting thought: Now that Bernice and Ben have “made up” – is he about to disappear, too? (Having served his purpose, you know, shoving Bernice into Luann’s house, &c)
And a big shout out to Trilogy, who gave us that thumbnail on Einstein yesterday.
Finally, we need to remember that, for the most part, Shannon is a “plot device,” and we might as well get used to it, that Shannon is going to appear, and appear regularly, whenever it suits G&K’s purposes.
Well, I think I’ve beaten that dead horse to death.
Hop, skip and jump, the cookies are made! Another “oops” ignored.Nice that Shannon uses titles and can now pronounce “Brad”. Also sweet that she hugs Bernice, which flusters her. Cute. ;-D
The thing I’m trying to figure out is whether Brad’s parents would have some sort of actual official relation designation to Shannon (great aunt and uncle by marriage?) that could somehow lend itself to a title that Shannon could refer to them by other than Mr. Frank and Miss (?) Nancy. How about Uncle Frank and Aunt Nancy?
> Shannon Lewis/Daytona Toni’s bratty, short-tempered and disrespectful 5 year old niece, and daughter of Toni’s brother (as established in early June 2010). Luann used to babysit Shannon Lewis and her little cousin, Lindy, back in 1996 (she had babysat Lynda before then); however she quit due to Shannon. She reappeared as Toni’s cousin according to 2008 episodes, but in June 2010 it was established that Toni’s brother is her father, and thus Toni’s niece. She is used to getting what she wants by whining or throwing temper tantrums, possibly due to her father ignoring his responsibilities as a father each time he leaves Toni to watch her for him. Toni’s continuous duty of babysitting Shannon has unfortunately increased the lack of time Brad and Toni have to see each other, given that their schedules at their stations have kept them busy enough. Shannon seems to have a strong liking for Brad, and always looks forward to seeing him (Even though the feeling’s not mutual for Brad). On Greg Evans’ blog, he states that the Daytona Shannon is not the same as the Lewis Shannon, but hints that they may be related. First Appearance: 1/8/1996
Shannon is such a horrible monster! How dare she force cookies on people who didn’t ask for them! And then she forces herself on Bernice, who already hates kids. Worst kid ever! /S /S /S
Can we all just take a moment and breathe a sigh of relief that Shannon has finally learned how to say Brad’s name? (At least for now…) Maybe GnK will allow her to grow up a little? And yes, it’s sweet of her to think of everyone.
