I love the boys in their formal wear. Goldie’s dress is divine. I wonder if Sophie designed it. But where are the robber mice? A feast of bite sized food like this should have caught their attention. Will Goldie’s next case be the mystery of the missing mice?

I have too much food! I have planned for Home Made Pizza. But I also have Chicken Stir Fried Rice, Bagel Cheese Burger, and Lasagna! Desserts are worse! Cherry Chocolate Cordial, Chocolate Pudding, Blueberry Fudge, Lava Cake, and Blooming Fruit Pie! The cats… poor things… Touch of milk, Tuna, Goochy Food, Egg, and anything they can con off my plate!

(Lifting my glass of Apple Juice, Tea, and Hot Coco) Here is to us all having a prosperous New Year!

The lads and the lady are dressed to impress. Obviously this is a gala event! I doubt if there will be many guests (including Tommy and Beatrix as well as their owners) coming to the apartment/big house except via Zoom or WhatsApp as everyone is being responsible and social distancing but I do expect an appearance from the Robber Mice, so where are they?

After all that effort into their party wear, some human has to come in and take the treat tray away…unfortunately hungry cats, goodies, and dozens of toothpicks dont go together. I do feel sorry for people who like to gather for NY eve…not really the best idea this year. But many will do it anyway…

Soon it will be midnight here. But the only hot drink I’m having this time is a hot cup of tea. If you think that’s weird, well, this year was weirder. And I’ve got a feeling the next year is going to be better, but it’s going to take time. (Of course, if the media would stop all their scaremongering, then it would take much lesser time). Anyway, cheers, folks. A happy new year. And soon, here we go again for another ride around the sun.

At the gathering of the New Years’ Feast

Queen Catshepsut the Golden: And now we bid a not so fond farewell to 2020 BC* and welcome in the New Year! Has anyone made any resolutions?

Elvis-Anum: I plan to be more dignified and awesome.

Lupinium: I just want to have fun.

The Royal Procurers: We’ll never tell!

The Queen: And now I believe Emma and Avenger have an announcement to make

Avenger: Yes. In the New Year a new life and new story will unfoald!

Beatrixia: Oh when are you due?

Emma: Normally it would take almost a year, but thanks to the magic of Cartoon Science, it will be very soon.

Puckmosis: Have you picked out names yet?

The Royal Procurers: All in good time, my kitties, all in good time.

As a child, my siblings and I did not have much opportunity to eat junk food or drink soda. Every New Years my parents would put out a spread like this for us and we could eat and drink as much as we want. For dessert there would be several types of ice cream and fixings for sundaes or floats. After gorging we would break a homemade piñata that my dad would make each year. It would have candy, New Years party favors, comics, mad magazine and pennies with the new year on them. These were the best new year celebrations I have had. In my forty years of adult life I never had as good a New Years as these. In fact only one new years party would even make the top 50 list of parties I have experienced. In 1984 and artist friend of my brother’s pulled out all the stops for the theme. Unfortunately his artist friends were not big readers of Orwell and really didn’t appreciate the effort.

Today is: The last day I will be posting a “Today is” comment. Doing this was intended as a substitute for a BCN calendar, using as first inspiration one by Sandra Boynton, later expanded when people complained because I didn’t include one they knew about. It takes at least an hour, often more, to choose the holidays, research them, and come up with something to say. To misquote the song, Goober Peas “I think this thing has lasted almost long enough/ the subjects are most interestin’ but jokes are mighty rough/” I want to spend that time reading and responding to other’s comments, which I have had to cut back. You folks are dear to me, and I’m glad if this gave you some joy and thought during this year of “straight up poop.”

Unlucky Day: Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. That was every day of 2020.

Make Up Your Mind Day: Yes, I know. Those hospital corners are just so baffling …

Hogmanay: A Scottish New Year celebration. Has very little to do with hogs. Some etymologists think it is derived from Middle French. I think that is hogwash (the only place the hogs come in) because although there has been a strong French influence in Scotland, it is relatively recent. The Celtic (Goidelic) “influences” are native, and the Norse influences have been there since at least ~700 CE, possibly even proto-Norse before that.† So I think the last more likely: an invocation to the elves to to banish the trolls into the sea. That would fit with its probable origin as a pagan Winter Solstice celebration. So may the Ljos Alfar bless us, and the trolls be banished. As for origin, you can make up your own mind. Don’t forget the hospital corners …

National Champagne Day: Ironically, an Englishman, Christopher Merret, invented the process that produces champagne. Inebriation being a national sport among the Celts and their descendants, the French ran with it (safer than scissors.) So let’s have a toast. Burps optional.
