Far Out, I’m sure but I don’t know the songs or the groups. Anything by Led Zeppelin or Rolling Stones ,ok. I have a certain liking for the Dropkick Murphys and Jethro Tull but I was collecting Gypsy and Middle Eastern music at that time….
I am surprised Georgia did not go with “Shiny Happy People”. Definitely a catchy tune the kids would go for. It was a REM song from 1990/91 but Kate Pierson from the B’52s provided some of the vocals and was prominent in the video which used to be popular on MTV back when they showed videos….
B52s, DaftPunk and Gorrillaz (maybe) are all in my top 50 favourite bands. (I have a lot of favourites!) The Pixies, The Smiths and Pulp are probably my top 3.
Planet Claire by the B52’s has a good beat, and my personal favorite is “Private Idaho.” You’re living in your own private Idaho, under ground like a wild potato…..
Back in the late 70s, when KISS sold out and became the patron saints of of lunchboxes, some Einstein concert promotor who apparently missed the bulletin, put together a tour with Judas Priest fronting them. I’ll never forget walking around the arena being horrified for the suburban moms shepherding their giddy Garanimal clad offspring at their first concert through the throng of chemically enhanced, skinhead, leather clad and pierced, heavy-metal headbangers. Positively Fellini-esque.
I am not sure what’s to be clueless about. The B-52’s became HUGE in ‘89 when they released “Cosmic Thing” and Love Shack was the second single. The video is tons of fun as it mostly takes place at a house party where they’re the band (there’s even a cameo by RuPaul, who even suggested the Soul Train dance line). The dang song was ubiquitous for a very long time, even after they released the follow up singles Roam and yes, The Deadbeat Club (which is the perfect song, truly). It’s a good thing they didn’t make the children familiar with Rock Lobster, off their first album in ‘78, because it’s very underground and strange (you can look it up on YouTube).
As for Daft Punk, it’s an electronic dance group and we never saw the faces of the duo behind it. You’re probably familiar with their hit single “Get Lucky.”
Gorillaz was the side project of Damon Albarn from Brit-pop band Blur with comic book artist Jamie Hewlett, and it’s a virtual band (=their videos are cartoons because that’s what the band members are). You’re probably familiar with their hit singles “Clint Eastwood” (t.ly/7QSi) or “Feel Good Inc.”
When I was a kid, my father put at least one speaker in every room of the house except the bathrooms and he controlled what we were allowed to listen to. I didn’t mind Sundays because it was church songs by Acapella, the college choir that my mother had sung in. My father’s choice started at 6:30 AM with the farm and ranch report then the weather. He also liked the old country and western music. I swore that when I was grown, I would have silence. Even now, I expect my kids not to inflict their listening choices on others. They can listen in their rooms with the door closed or use headphones.
I was in high school when the B-52s’ first album dropped. A friend of mine who had an older brother was “in the know” about all kinds of cool new music and introduced me to a whole new world of music being played on the local college radio station, Album88. I remember sitting in the library with this friend as he recited the lyrics of Rock Lobster to me. It was the craziest thing I had ever heard, and I was intrigued. Then I was in my room listening to The King Biscuit Flower Hour on the radio and they were about to play a recording of a Bs recent live show, and I grabbed a blank 8-track tape and recorded it. I listened to that tape over and over, and started listening to the college radio religiously. There were so many amazing bands emerging in those days, many from my college town of Athens, but also from “across the pond.” When MTV came along, it was a window to this new world of music, and in the early years, it was amazing. Nostalgia!
From yesterday by Georgia so now we know she’s a B-52 fan!“I want everyone to know that I put in the research for this week’s BCN strips! I like to be in a situation to make jokes about it, if I can. And hey, any excuse to listen to B-52’s album “Cosmic Thing”! It is TERRIFIC, especially in those last weeks of spring/first weeks of lazy summer. (I think tomorrow’s strip benefitted the most from this, lol!)”
Probably better than getting them hooked on “Rock Lobster.” The children imitating the the animal sounds toward the end would probably be madness-inducing, not to mention tripping all over them at the “down, down!” part.
When my youngest was 3 she was enamored with Barney. For her third birthday, she got everything Barney: sheets, blankets, clothes, toys, and even a talking Barney plushy. We were ever so relieved when it got left out in the backyard. In the rain. For a week. “Aw, look what I found outside.” It was even creepier than before in the few weeks after that before the batteries died. The voice was distorted and the randomizer kept making “unusual” choices.
But the worst was that my mother recorded a 6 hour VHS of the Barney and Friends show. For months, that was the only thing she wanted to watch. After a while the rest of us became numb to it. We were thrilled when she started Head Start and it somehow got misplaced.

I was pretty familiar with the music our daughter listened to in the ’90s because I drove her around and let her control the radio. She liked Alternative. The bands I remember are Offspring, Green Day, Sublime, Violent Femmes, Cake, and others. She preferred the guitar oriented stuff without drum machines or too much synthesizer.
The entire album is fantastic. But Deadbeat Club is my favorite. Such great memories – I was going to law school in Atlanta when this album was huge. My mom grew up in Athens, GA. I know exactly what bar has the tin roof rusted. I’ve been in California for years now but whenever I hear the “We’ll dance in the garden in torn sheets in the rain” lyric, I have a sense memory of a smell of country roads between Athens and Atlanta in the deep summer just after a thunderstorm.
At least they’re not groovin’ to 60s-70s bubblegum rock. I dare not mention those tunes, for they will bring forth some serious earworms to start playing in my head.
