Yes, Kaya.. A positive integer n has an odd number of divisors if and only if n is a … 4k + 1. ) . 1. 2 n−1. ∑ k=0. (. 4n. 4(n – 1 – k)1. ) … xn = nxn−1 + n n – 2.
Hope that helped!
LOL
.
Nice to see a new face in the strip, though, it would have been cool seeing Fay, again.
Is that even a valid mathematical question? An array is a set of numbers ordered in any number of dimensions. She mentions NxN, indicating that it’s a two dimensional array, N numbers wide and N numbers high. The formula N=4k+2, gives n=6 when k=1, 10 when N=2 and 14 for N=3. but what sort of solution is the girl asking for? She asked asked any question, only defined a series of arrays.
Also I think Greg really needs to stop trying to draw ethnics. This girl is not as bad as Sun was but still winch-inducing.
Finally aren’t tutors selected by the fields they are good in? Sending an English major to tutor a math student seems a waste of both people;s time.
So end another series of strips involving Luann and her foibles with a gag finish. Next week on to something new, but we will return to Homework Helpers again.
Would it have been that hard to dig up an actual AP-level math problem? I don’t know why, but seeing that gibberish just irks me. (Yeah, it’s gibberish: I’ve got a PhD in math.)
Uh. What is an array of NxN? And what does the rest of that gibberish mean? (My high school math classes that i took before heading to university were my lowest grades ever…. 53%in algebra, 57% in relations and functions and 66% in calculus) I had no choice but to be an English major, and have the life time career as a retail shelf stocker to show how useful that education was.
I believe there are specialized tutors for each subject. Or does this student simply the answers to her homework, and not so much for learning the concept or improving study habits?
As a former tutor for the college math department, the correct first response to Kaya’s question or one like it is: “Good question! Let’s find out together!”
G&K must have pulled this problem out of an old math book… Otherwise, it seems like there’s some thing a bit “stereotypical” about this… “Asian kid loves math”..
My question is when will the GOP decide that math is as dangerous as books seem to be these days. Censorship is the strongest drive on earth; sex, a weak second.
Sadly, it is common for teachers to have poor command of their subject matter. It demonstrates that teachers are often part of a job program and also there to help indoctrinate kids to the woke ideology. Not most of them, but a large minority of them.
Not sure where this arc is going, but maybe they should concentrate on matching Luann’s skills with the student’s needs. Unless, of course, their actual intention is to make Luann look like a total nincompoop. Eons ago, I enjoyed Student Teacher Day at my high school, and loved assisting in our English Department’s Creative Writing Class. But if I were to try assisting with our Math department …… Ay Yo! Fuggetta ‘bout id!!! Oh well, we’ll see what Monday brings.
Better do a comic crossover and call Jason from Foxtrot. While you are there, see if you can get a date with Peter and your boyfriend problems will be solved!!!
ANOTHER Asian kid who knows more than the teacher!? Gad, I am so sick of this cliche, it insults all hardworking Americans, and the Communists do enough of that. You know what would help our kids do better in school? STOP CUTTING THEIR FUNDING AT EVERY TURN!
And another storyarc ends with G&K crapping on their main character. Though really, the blame for this situation lies with Luann’s boss for assigning her this kid. If you need a military helicopter flown from point A to point B, you don’t tell an infantryman to fly it; no, you call a pilot. And conversely, you wouldn’t ask the pilot to conduct infantry operations.
This stunning misallocation of resources is further evidence that Mrs Fogarty is about as useful as a glass hammer.
Our kid’s middle school had free night refresher courses for math so parents could help their kids with the math homework. The classes were always full.
Luann wasn’t always such a mundane character in the strip. Right now, she comes across as your favorite maiden Aunt. Ever since the group split up between Mooney U. and Pitts C.C. the group dynamic has crashed. Quill was introduced in November, 2009. The tension between Luann and Tiffany around Quill carried the strip shifting to the sexual tension between Luann and Quill. Around this time Brad and Toni were Brad and Toni were a hot item and Nancy was cool toward here. The strip was loaded with drama.
Then something changed around 2016. There was the Big Wedding, then… Luann and Quill break up. Tiffany pal zones Gunther. Luann pal zones Gunther. After she pal zones him, Tiff’s attempt to hook up Gunther and Bernice fails.
Except for Gunther, nothing has “clicked” since then.
You know what? This one was funny. Luann should’ve written on whatever application she filled out regarding which subjects she’s willing to help with, “Math? No thanks”.
Boy, can I relate to this! When I was a teacher, I once went for an interview for a teaching job on a military post. I was told that I would be expected to teach English, a subject in which I minored, and did quite well. Then, the other shoe dropped when he said I would also be expected to teach math, a subject in which I did miserably, and in which I tended to turn numbers around. I stopped the interview right then and there, and told the man that I didn’t want to waste any more of his time, because there was no way I could teach math. As I got up to leave, I still remembered the shocked look on his face.
Above is an example of a 4×4 Graeco-Latin square: 16 combinations of two attributes—rank and suit—arranged in a 4×4 array with each rank (J, Q, K, A) appearing exactly once in each row and once in each column, each suit (clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades) appearing once in each row and once in each column, and each rank paired exactly once with each suit (no two cards alike).
If you add a fifth rank (say, 2) and fifth suit (say, pretzels) you can find 5×5 examples, such as this one:
JC QD KP AS 2H
KS AH 2C JD QP
2D JP QS KH AC
QH KC AD 2P JS
AP 2S JH KC QD
What about 6×6? 7×7? …? (Assume you get to invent as many ranks and suits as you need.)
I speculate that Kaya left out the beginning of her problem and that “a solution to an array of N×N” is an attempt (slightly garbled by Kaya and/or her teacher and by Greg and/or Karen) to say “an N×N Graeco-Latin square”. With this interpretation, the problem would be simple enough for a middle schooler to understand (if they’re not so math-phobic that they shut off their brain before they even try), but outrageously difficult to actually solve.
For more, including where the N = 4K+2 part comes in, see this Numberphile video:
My apology if someone already mentioned this possibility. What if Kaya is really needing tutoring in writing or English or something that Luann is good at. But she’s just throwing out this math problem because she’s good at math and is kind of “teasing” Luann with this question?
We haven’t seen a Les arc in a while. Maybe something with him and Tiff. The Evans have flirted with that many times. I.e., the Gray dinner, the Eiffel fetus picture reveal, 30JAN2018 – Last Gunther/Les spat over Tiffany’s attention, 5JUN2018 Tiff put a move on Les, 19APR2019, 8AUG2019 Les asks Tiff to move in with him, 21&22JUL2020 the latest kiss incident.
It seems to be moving that way. It even makes some sort of sense when you consider this: https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2017/06/13.
