Personally, I think Calvin is ‘over-educated’ in the realm of child psychology and should act more his age rather than a ‘stuck-up’ 30+ year old fresh out of college (including post graduate years) ! ! ! !
30 years ago, this was humorous satire, poking fun at a fringe of society. Today it is everyday reality, taught in all levels of education – Kinderarten through Medical & Law degrees.
Again, reading this decades later, It has has become clear just how many kids didn’t understand the sarcasm in this strip and grew up thinking Calvin was supposed to be a role model.
Calvin was ahead of his time on this one; the ‘culture of victimhood’ is not only a religious belief now but also the basis for an entire political spectrum!
Boy howdy, this comic from my youth sure describes how kids these days are rotten and ought to be as perfect as I’ve deluded myself into thinking I was!
For a while, there was a psychotherapy fad that bullies only became bullies because they had low self-esteem. After a period of singling out bullies for praise and extra attention, we had a generation of bullies with high self-esteem. That theory was abandoned.
Are we certain that this strip is from the archives? Has maybe Bill Watterson slipped a new one in on us that perfectly nails both our latter-day lefty children and righty degenerates?
I knew someone who would blame his troubles on almost everyone but himself. He was the most hopeless guy I knew, presumably because when you don’t accept responsibility, you don’t feel empowered to change anything.
