I agree with EWM above, but I would say it’s more the news mediums are chasing audiences, trying to lead by following in front.

It’s sad that newspapers are in such decline in America. Along with the extinction of many, we’re seeing a new phenomenon that many of the survivors no longer print comic strips, puzzles, or letters to the editor.

“If I had to choose between government without newspapers, and newspapers without government, I would not hesitate to choose the latter.” —Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), 3rd US president

It’s unfortunate that there are enough different “news sources” to cater to every single idea, all providing the echo chamber of what to think, but no one reminding people how to think. Want to believe that the earth is flat and all statements to the contrary are part of a global conspiracy? Want to believe that Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey are among the satanic worshiping cannibal pedophile elite? Want to believe that there never was Covid, and that it was all a ruse to get people to get injections which rewrite their DNA and implant microchips which allow their minds to be programmed via Wi-Fi? Want to believe that celebrities who all died decades ago will return from the dead and get elected into the highest offices of the US government? Here’s your news sources. That crazy guy hollering conspiracy theories on the street corner now has tens of thousands of followers through social media, which is enough for them to get interviewed or a hosting gig on one of those news sources.

FOX airs what the MSM would rather dismiss as Russian disinformation — until proven true. Then it’s dismissed as “old news”, so let’s move on, no retraction required.

“Do Your Own Research” means search for “evidence” of what you want to believe. Too bad websearch is NOT real research.

But mostly thanks to the googles, self-delusion has never been easier. “Evil for ads” is the new motto.

“The writers of books whose contents were controversial were condemned for putting down [pick any] minority. Writers of books whose contents could not immediately be understood by all were lambasted for making readers feel inferior.” Ray Bradbury called this … seventy years ago (Fahrenheit 451). Except that we don’t have the money or the will to build fireproof houses.

You don’t have to color within the lines, but keeping it at least on the page helps communication. If you want to try expanding your horizons, he might have transparent tape available from ‘under the plank’, for a price. But ya halfta know a guy who knows a guy.

News has always been DIY. Stories are largely driven by attention they will attract or reporter’s desired conclusion. The trick for individuals is understanding what is real and not.

The GQP Chicken Cult that thinks OAN and Fox Entertainment Network and Newsmax and the like are 100% factual are out in farce today trying to spread more of the new & improved grape Kool-aid that their masters told them they have to take just like Sinclair has “must read” propaganda pitches that their newsreaders must read on the air or be fired. That my friends is their brand of freedom of the press. Are any of you buying into that today or any other day?

I’m not surprised that so many posters are mistaking the idea that news is opinion and opinion is news.

News is the same on all networks. It’s the opinion and analysis of it which is tailored to the viewership of that network.

    Here are examples of news:

The “weather” spy baloons are flying over the US air space.

    An earthquake happened in Turkyie.

    Russia invaded Ukraine.

George Santos made up his resume.

There is a shooting of people, by other people, every single day in the US.

A massacre happens at least once a month in the US.

There are homeless people all over the US.

    There was a tornado somewhere.

Drug companies created and caused the opiod crisis.

There was a collision on the highway just this past hour.

There is a fire happening just now.

American children are the most obese children in the whole world.

American population as a whole is 70% obese…

Etc. …. All that above is is news.

If you are denying in your mind that the news, that I itemized just now, is not news but something made up, you have bigger problems in your brain than anyone can solve.

Fair reporting isn’t that complicated. Just stick to reporting facts without any sweeping generalising and divisive condemnations, propaganda, lies, dogmatic ideology, and hatemongering in any direction whatsoever, or any convenient hiding of important facts that inconvenience the oligarchy that own them for that matter.
