Yes, Gunther is being a moron. He either needs to unfollow Bets and accept what happened or re-connect with her (not necessarily on the road – he could give her a phone call to start off).
Also, when you keep staring at your phone after someone asks for your undivided attention, you deserve a forehead flick.
Props to Les as an intervention was required for Gunther. Les is spot on as G-Man is acting like a moron. Dude needs to take action, either talk to Bets or simply move on with his life.
I know Gunther backers consider him to be polite, studious, intelligent and all. I concur but these adjectives would barely be in my top 10 or list to describe Gunther. Lets start with Mama’s boy, floor mat, push over, lacking backbone, indecisive, conservative, dork/nerd, eclectic, etc. After viewing what appears to be a happy road trip which went terribly wrong, and seeing Gunther basically wallowing in his sorrow it is hard to say anything positive about the guy. Perhaps he had good reason to split up with Bets, going back to school is a big one, especially when a scholarship and Mom are footing the bills. However, I bet the primary reason is just like the Rosa situation all over; he missed the cocoon his Mom made for him and found a way to make the former woman in his life send him home.
Gunther, Gunther, Gunther. Whatever happened on the trip, Bets no longer thinks of you as the man she loves. If she loves anyone, it’s herself, and her audience is what is important most important to her. Her audience is more important than you or school. She has found her independence in that van, and she is going to keep at it until the 12th of Never.
Les is…not wrong. Stewing over Bets’ glossy pictures of an event he missed won’t tell Gunther how she’s really feeling. If he wants her back, he’ll have to talk to her, maybe after ColossalCon is over. He’s already back at school; she isn’t. They’ll either work something out, or she’ll tell him it’s over, and he can move on. They’re just college kids; this relationship doesn’t have to be saved, and Gunther doesn’t have to do anything he doesn’t want to do (like ditching the semester, losing money and delaying his graduation) on a whim.
Isn’t the term “moron” considered politically incorrect? From Bing: “It’s worth noting that the term “moron” is now considered offensive and was formerly used as a technical descriptor in medical, educational, and regulatory contexts”I would rather Les had said, “Wake up. You’re acting like a fool”
Maybe Les will being the one giving Gunther the serious speech that he needs to hear. The two cousins have become closer thanks to their cohabitation. Maybe he will be able to tell Gunther something important to make him move forward, but what will it be? In the past he tried to point out to him how Bets bossed him around everytime, maybe he’ll tell him that he was right to leave her and he should stop following her accounts. But Les had also become friends with Bets, so he could tell him that he should stay with her and follow her on her tour of the North American Cons, maybe he will convince him to come-back to her. Go Les! Surprise everyone!
Gunther? You’re one of my favorite characters in the series, but you gotta listen to Les here. Yes, he’s the “Joey” to your “Chandler” but like Joey, he’s got your back. Listen to boy!
GUNTHER! Wake up already! Whatever part of her cosPLAY life you once were, you’ve been discarded. She’s living HER adventures, in HER van, for the adoration of HER fans. You’ve been seeing it for a long time, now let it sink in.
Love it! Gunther would do well to listen to Les. Still liking this Les. ;-)I ’m thinking Les will tell him, that if he loves and misses Bets, he should go get her, or be with her, and if not, stop following her posts. But, I could be wrong.
For once, Les is absolutely correct. I have never understood how Gunthie managed to be attractive to so many young women. He’s a dedicated Mama’s boy, a hapless nerd, constantly dealing with self-inflicted crises, judgmental to all faults but his own, and about as physically attractive as the Pilsbury doughboy.
Oh brother, is Leslie Knox going to play Cupid and tell Turnip Boy to run back to Bets and do a “Grand Romantic Gesture?” I’d rather these two move on at this point, they’ve shown that they’re wrong for each other. And from a reader standpoint, their relationship hasn’t exactly been especially entertaining for the strip (I’d love to know how many people bought the novella about these two because they think they’re fabulous together).
A break up that results in one half of the couple leaving with the transportation while the other takes a Lyft home? I dunno, yeah, I guess you could TRY to get on the same page but nothing’s convinced me that they’re deeply in love enough to do the work. Gunnie couldn’t even be man enough to tell Big Momma that she was being rude and passive aggressive to Bets!
Remember back in the golden olden days when movies and TV shows were in black and white and they were actually GOOD?
There was a scene sometimes where a person (Usually female) would get hysterical over something (Usually nothing) and another person (Usually a male) would Slap That Person Back to Their Senses.
Well, and I can’t believe I am about to type this but…..,LESSHOULDHAVEDONETHATHEREWITHGUNTHERTODAY!
Darn You, Karen Evans.
DARN YOU! You’ve actually got Me semi-agreeing with (GAG, VOMIT) Les. And THAT makes Me feel Unclean.
Now I have to go and Purify Myself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.
PS: And for God’s Sake, don’t any of you Yahoos go around slapping “folks” today because you think that they are “hysterical.”
You’ll only attract assault charges and salivating lawyers. ;-)
I just realized something, if Les does tell Gunther to go to Bets and do a “Grand Romantic Gesture” and go to the comic-con to Bets, this could end up being like a pretty funny Simpsons Episode “My Big Fat Geek Wedding” where Skinner tries to stop Krabappel from marrying the Comic Book Guy resulting in her being set on not getting back together with the Momma’s Boy cause she was mature enough to realize that the relationship was flawed and not worth the stress and compromises.
The two most unappealing characters leading the way, must be an example of artificial intelligence taking over the drawing and writing of a comic strip. Trying to be “woke” has ripped out the very soul of a once happy, humorous cartoon. Can we impeach Luann?
Forehead flickers may be rude and mean, but they are not necessarily dumb. Les can see that Gunther is not paying attention to him. Les should wait until he does have his attention or go do something else. If someone is on their phone I go do something else. I don’t wait around for them to give me attention.
I think Les will tell Gunther to stop following Bets and focus on his education. Gunther does all the cooking and cleaning. Les will not give up that to tell Gunther to go find Bets. Also, Les knows they are not a good match and Gunther is better off without Bets.
I hate saying it but it seems that Bets had been using Gunther from the beginning. Free cosplay costumes, room and board and as soon as the thrill of playing house in stealthy sneak mode ran out she wants to travel and have fun.. sans Gunther.. that or they had a big fight and Bets decided to stay on the road..
Wow, this arc has more padding than a Brian Michael Bendis comic. Les isn’t wrong though. Not sure what Gunther’s reply means though; how are forehead flickers morons?
Les has had a difficult life, with a mother who is a con artist and abandoned him and an uncle who practices being unknowable. He is without doubt cynical about life but sees things more clearly than most in this comic. The thing is he is growing more than most in Luann, and obviously does and wants change and he cares. Not the most empathetic about showing it, but that is Les.
Unbelievably, Leslie Knox is actually trying to do Gunther a favor. But Gunny is too obsessed, still, with Bets to notice or to take being called a moron as the warning it is meant to be….
