They still haven’t really figured out what could be in that long case. We seem to be way ahead of them.
Sam has made some progress, though, even if he does think that Xaviera’s name is Xaveria. Lizz is sticking her tongue out? That seems like a strange reaction to me. Anyway, Sam has a plan, apparently.
He is taking it rather well all things considered. And You’re welcome, fman ! :-)

I find it a little hard to understand as N-G does not strike me as a water person. A guy was doing coast guard exercises, got infected with something, and lost all his limbs and some internal organs. He is Bill Reilly, former DAV Commander. Our man appreciates your help. ;-p
Somehow, I don’t see Sam playing spin the bottle with Xavier Libris to get a saliva sample. If he were to “go there”, besides her saying, “you’re not my type” she also would say “have you lost your mind”?
It’s all Sam all the time today. Last panel ladies are looking creepy. With Sam looking all flush you’d think it was International Sam Day … or something.
D@mn it, they’ve had probable cause for a warrant on Libris since the late Backroom Guy showed Lee the bookplate and identified it as coming from Libris. Any judge with half a brain would give them one. They could legally demand a DNA sample. (And they would have started looking at the videos within hours of the crimes instead of waiting days.)
DNA sample does not need to be saliva. Anything Libris handles will have skin cells on that that can be used. While I applaud that actually forensic tools are being used I look forward to the next step — using them appropriately.
And, since they’re actually trying to be detectives in this arc, did we really need the coincidence of Tracy asking an old buddy, “Hey, can you introduce me to an expert on rare books,” and being told, “Sure, I happened to be school with a fencer who left a yearbook quote about stabbing people,” who turns out to be the killer?
I like this . I like today’s Sunday Dick Tracy . I like the art , as always , and I like the dialogue and interplay between the characters . Yeah , I like this .
Today’s Sunday Dick Tracy has it all . From the opening panel with the evidence bagged teacup to the last panel with Sam referencing that and his idea . Fantastic artwork by The Great Shelley Pleger and Eric Costello must be given respect for building the story to its climax . That three part panel showing the stills from the CCT footage and Dick and Sam’s dialogue discussing it is classic Dick Tracy . This is a great Sunday . What Sunday is supposed to be .
Lee, Liz, you know what a great guy Sam is, and, probably wouldn’t mind giving him a saliva sample the way your minds seemed to go (against stereotype for women.) But, X Libris doesn’t know Sam, the way you two do, so why would she give Sam a sample that way. Plus, she’s being portrayed as such a cold person.
1-DT: Wipe that shite-eating grin off your face, Sam, and put away those peeper-creeper pics you take at night.
2-SAM: These aren’t my hobby pictures – they’re all the evidence we need to get a search warrant on X!
3-DT:OOOOooohhhh! Mr. Legal Beagle now!
4-SAM: I saw them do it on a CSI episode last night. I think it was the one in NY. No – Hawaii…maybe New Orleans. Wait… DT: SHUT UP!
5-SAM: Yeah. Liz should arrange for it since she’s naturally good at paperwork – being born a chick and all. LIZ:PFFFFFFTTTT!SAM: UGH! You got spit on me! WAIT A SECOND! I’LL USE THAT LINE TO GET A SPIT SAMPLE FROM X!
DT: Don’t bother. She’s way into me. I got a better approach… Liz’s tongue bringing my little detective to a full TEN-HUT made me think of it… LIZ AND LEE: GROSS!
OK, yes, ha ha, Sam’s colleagues on the Major Crimes Unit are razzing him by implying he’s going to extract saliva from their suspect X. Libris by smooching her, and Liz is even demonstrating the frenching technique he’ll used to acquire an adequate sample size, but we need to talk about the metaphor Sam is deploying in response in the final panel. I guess we’re supposed to visualize him … face down in the gutter? Sort of swimming along? But he’s wearing a snorkel, so he can get a real good look at what’s going on down there? And these floating brains keep blocking his access to air? It’s all very unsettling, and once they solve this series of gruesome stab murders, probably everyone on the squad should sue everyone else for creating a hostile work environment.
Well, I see in my holiday absence this story has continued its hard-driving, pell-mell, burnt-rubber charge toward a nail-biting, mind-blowing, slam-bang finale, dash it all!
Yeah, this story has been a bit tedious in spots, but I forgive it all for the sake of today’s last panel. Priceless retort by Sam—all the better because it doesn’t quite make sense, and yet conveys a message precisely—and superb artwork by Shelley on the reactions.
I really like it when they use authentic cop jargon like blocking my snorkel. I think Joe Wambaugh, Steve Bochco, Spillane, Hammett, Agatha Christie all used the snorkel in their stories but Arthur Conan Doyle used it first in the short story The Mystery of the Wetwang Mouth Breather.
What the MCU team needs is a DNA sample from Xaviera Libris, of any kind, though Sam’s idea seems to concentrate on saliva. The two ladies on the squad seem repulsed by what they envision as Sam’s plan and do not hesitate to let him know it, graphically. Such joshing in fact suggests the close camaraderie of the MCU, though, in reality.
In a rare exception to my keeping all personal facts vague, I note that today’s Honor Roll cites my village and the late passing of RGFD member Robert David Reisinger. Chicago Tribune story: https://tinyurl.Com/ycm5n3yu
What do the I and C on the long case stand for? If the IC was displayed together, I would think it was 99 in Roman Numerals, which also somehow relate it to “XL” being Libris’ initials. C might also stand for Caxton (I still think Xaviera may have taken the long case from Caxton’s home).

Those “Sawdust” cartoons that Chester Gould used to feature back in the day had more narrative momentum & cohesion than this storyline.
