As a ship transporting tea lay in Boston harbor, a party of colonists, dressed as red Indians, boarded the vessel, behaved very rudely, and threw all the tea overboard. This made the tea unsuitable for drinking, even for Americans.
My mind seems to have a brain freeze on Dec. 16, 1773, but I DO remember that on December 16, 1775, English author Jane Austen of Pride and Prejudice fame, was born!
Just 2 years later, close enough, since Calvin claims there is no past or future!
True story. Standing in line to vote in 2016, lady next to me and I are chatting. Clerk gives her the ballot and says “Here you go, Ballot #1812.” I said, “Hey, famous year in American History.” She say “Huh?” I said “That’s the year the British burned what was to become the White House. You know, the War of 1812.” “Never heard of it” says she and off to the voting booth she went. Clerk and I just looked at each other.
“People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint – it’s more like…”
I used to play in a vintage baseball organization, and we staged the 1870s event, that was covered by local TV news. I mentioned to the reporter that our character backgrounds included being Civil War veterans. He asked if that was in 1890. He had absolutely no idea when that war was fought.
Actually…Calvin may or may not be wrong as “All Time Existing at the Same Time” is a theoretical concept in quantum theory. Now, did he stumble upon this idea on his own or did he accidentally learn something?
What is the point of memorizing the date of the Boston Tea Party? Ignoring the fact that Calvin is 6 years old, the reasons to learn about the Boston Tea Party are about why it happened, what led up to it, what happened after it and later consequences of it, the date of it.
My granddaughter was bored with history in regular classes, but when moved to advanced classes, she loved them. She even dragged me over to her last history teacher at her graduation to meet him as one of her favorite teachers. The difference between the two was regular classes were about memorizing dates, names and places, but the advanced classes were about interlocking stories.
We all get excited about shared universes in books\movies\tv shows interlocking but ignore our own shared universe.
My eighth grade Oklahoma History teacher was the absolute epitome of boredom. I thought that OK’s history was just nothing. Fast forward many years, I picked up a newer OK History book and was fascinated by what I read.
Dad, when he finds out about Calvin’s answer: “Oh, darn it! We were going to go to Disneyland this summer, but since there is no future, there’s no point in planning for that!”
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it’s more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey-wimey… stuff…
Dates can exist whether or not time is linear. A date is a unique identifier for a defined area centered around a point in time. Because dates are assigned sequentially according to a bizarre algorithm they bolster the illusion of sequential time.
