I JUST used up my last “pandemic” roll about 2 weeks ago! And I wasn’t really hoarding, or so I told myself. Other people were much, much worse. I’ll bet a LOT of people still have their pandemic TP.
I thought it was ridiculous to stock up on TP. When there were fears of shortages I stocked up on scotch and bourbon. I knew I could find substitutes for TP but not good booze.
There were so many TikTok videos of people showing off their house packed to the gills with stuff they’d hoarded from Supermarkets – toilet rolls being the major item of course. Made me angry when I saw those as we nearly ran out ourselves once since we’d been reasonable. I heard of one guy that (somehow) managed to have hundreds of toilet rolls at home, When the pandemic ended, he tried to sell them back to the supermarket. They told him to bog off (pardon the pun)
The point is…there never was a shortage, just fools who bought as many as they could find..“Just in case”. I had a neighbour (Canadian and British spelling) with three small boys come to my house asking if I had extra (I did) …because as a single lady “I must not need much”. I gave her a package of 12 rolls. She never even offered to pay for it so I did not ask her to.
The funny thing about the comments today, most of the complainers aren’t really complaining about the Pattersons, they are complaining because they didn’t get to the store first.
With the price of toilet paper today, one should look into purchasing a Japanese toilet. No need for toilet paper at all and it will pay for itself with the cost savings on toilet paper.
A recent RBION strip talked about a Michigan High School who built a pyramid out of 27,434 rolls of TP back in 2020 https://www.gocomics.Com/ripleysbelieveitornot/2024/01/27
for some reason I understand those hoarders… butts are not the main reason, but it has mainly to do with women, and no, they cannot use corn cobs (I wonder what they used before the invention of toilet paper)
I recall that many years ago, when Johnny Carson was host of the Tonight Show, he made a joke about a toilet paper shortage. After that, many stores reported a run on toilet paper, even though there was no shortage.
Back in 1976 or so we heard about a sugar shortage. My brother and I didn’t use much sugar since he kept bees and had over a gallon of honey at hand, so we laughed about the people who were trying to hoard the sugar. Then we came home from Auburn one weekend to discover sugar on every shelf in the kitchen. We asked our mother why she bought so much and she said because it she was afraid the hoarders were going to get it. They didn’t!!
Over time that sugar turned….not quite as hard as a brick but close. She kept a hammer in the kitchen to break it up to make tea with.
Costco never ran out. They sent emails out to remind people not to panic. The quality and availability of many items wend down due to supply and demand. That’s one thing that was upsetting about 2020
And the stupid suggestions I found in my messenger inbox. I think the worst was someone saying that to kill covid to blow hot air into your nostrils using a hair dryer!? The funniest meme I saw was someone who, after seeing a mask tip- using a cup from a bra, tried her double D cup which almost covered her entire head.
Just before the High Hand of Dr. Fouchi came down, we had just installed bidets (cold water only) in all of our toilets. Didn’t even notice that there was a shortage, until we looked at the grocery shelves.
During the Covid-19 times I was grocery shopping. I was surprised to see a large pile of TP for sale. There were multiple vibrant signs telling customers only 2 packets per person. I grabbed one multipack & continue my shopping.Time passed & I headed to check out. As I passed the TP area I saw that the once large pile had shrunk by about 75%.As I approached check out I could hear screaming. There was a woman with one cart overflowing with only TP. The clerk, followed by the store manager, explained that this was Corporate policy. That only 2 packages could be purchased. The woman was yelling & cursing vividly. She finally left leaving a stream of dire threats & all of “her” TP not even buying the 2 she could have purchased. The Manager then offered Security to all the customers who felt unsafe, walking to their cars, with their purchases lest crazy lady might try to grab their TP. I declined the offer.
I remember a large sign in my grocery store in 2022: “We will not refund money on TP you purchased in 2020.” I wonder how many hoarders tried to return two-year-old TP before the store had to put up a sign.

They are the reason that stores ran out, and some shoppers had to do without. Shame, shame!

I had a package of 12 extra large rolls. I bought them by accident before the plague thinking they were paper towels. They lasted a year easy.

Strange, I thought Darryl and Wanda was well educated people, knowing it wasn’t needed to stock up on?

The weirdest thing about Toilet Paper Panic is that if you had none at all, you could just step into the shower. No big deal.

Okay, now I hate them because they are those people.
