I don’t know why you bother asking, Calvin. You don’t even take no for an answer.

Now tell Dad which offensive movie you plan on watching, and see if he agrees with it.

When dealing with governments you have an absolute right of free expression, when dealing with the family, bot so much.

Nah, doubt it’s porn (girls, naked or otherwise? Yuck!) He just wants to listen to the same music the other kids at school hear.

Wow…supercharged subject nowadays. All I know is, compared to my 1984 high school days, Big Brother has jumped the fence and gotten bigger. That is what I see now, compared to then.

Dad rarely thinks of the possible pitfalls when Calvin asks a seemingly thoughtful question. He never sees the tripwires.

I’m betting Hobbes is informing Calvin there is a movie called “Bikini Clad Space Bimboids on Mars” or something similar that he was interested in watching to learn more about the wonders of our universe…..

Come on, Calvin. Dad is exercising his right to free expression and exposing you to something that you find offensive and shocking. That’s what you asked for, right?

The first freedom elucidated in the Bill of Rights is Freedom of Religion, the second is Freedom of Speech.

Calvin is a great believer in absolute rights. Unfortunately, he has yet to understand they don’t exist.

No, as a parent of a minor child the responsibility to choose what is appropriate remains with the parent.

There’s a big difference between free speech and the context of those ideas or the appropriate age for being exposed to them.

Children dont have the same rights as adults, because they are not expected to understand or face the repercussions of their actions, which is why the juvenile court system is different. Parents need to protect their kids from things they are not ready to see or hear. Think, dropping F bombs in grade school by a teacher. College professors can and do. Second grade teachers should not.

Calvin…the reason Dad won’t expose you to such things is because you’re simply not ready to process those things. You’re not being taught calculus or Shakespeare in your 1st grade class, are you? It’s not a matter of censorship – it’s a matter of maturity.

this black and white view of the world perfectly tracks for a 6 year old who hasn’t learned nuance and subtlety yet, but grown up political speakers have no excuse, they are either less educated than a first grader or are being intentionally obtuse.
