Shannon has no lights because they are dumb things. Thomas Edison would be so disappointed. Also, Huggies called and wants to have a conversation about licensing.
Before people have children, they think they’ll be able to do everything much better than their parents or other parents around them. But truly, a child brought up by Toni and Brad from birth probably would be a lot easier to be around than Shannon, who has responded to six years of abandonment and flakiness.
My beloved was offended every time some older mother tried to give her advice.
It didn’t bother me. I rejected a lot of it. Some of it made sense. I didn’t consider it to be telling me I was a failure. She did. So what had been offered as friendly advice from one who had been there and done that was far too often rejected.
Of course she could not help herself years later when she would also offer a little advice. I believe it must be part of the nature of womankind.
I’m sorry, but I really didn’t like this week’s strip. The art was fine, but Brad and Toni’s kid seemed more like an Android or a Slave than a child. It felt kind of Gross to me. It also wasn’t funny.
I’m starting to like guest artist’s soft style even though I’m the one who originally liked the scratchy style of Heart of the City 5 years ago, and Soup to Nutz before it strayed into political things and crashed.
Well, I enjoyed it though was getting a little too one pearch preachy! I guess the norm for them will be somewhere between comic Shannon and ‘improved’ Shannon. They should decide to retire their strip I would love it if they would do a future point of view for each of the main characters Including challenging Shannon!
One last thought, decades ago I read an article about challenging children. A study had been going on for years and it said for each 2.3 (as I recall) children there would be one child that always seem to be going against the grain, hard to deal with, frustrating, and so forth. They also found that one child was unlikely to be a follower. Instead often a leader sometimes a great leader when continual direction and love is given despite the almost total lack of positive responses given to their caregivers while growing up. I hope to see that loving leader, Shannon in a strip someday. I hope to see your comic Village, amazed gratified by it too. Nuff said,
I like the artwork, but it looks very retro to me. It somehow reminds me of cartoons I used to watch way, way, way back even before the 60’s (sort of like Little Lulu or something).
I can’t help but wonder if life with Shannon would be better if Toni & Brad acted like real parents, making sure she knows she is LOVED and welcome but setting boundaries.
Is this over, this was appalling? It’s one thing to have a day dream sequence, it’s quite another to go be so absolutely overkill. Oh mom you know we don’t have a TV, oh mom you know I don’t have a phone, I’ll read Moby Dick (okay maybe). But just taking a character and doing a 180 that’s absolutely beyond unhealthy. I like normal Shannon better (okay maybe w/ some attitude adjustments and some discipline but that Shannon is preferable to this one). This day dream Shannon is a kid that will crumble the first time Brad and Toni discipline her or something goes not how this perfect world envisions it.
Now that Brad and Toni are sure that Shannon is sleeping, she can go to her secret lab and travel to distant planets. Toni’s dream was funny and a little terrifying. I wonder if next week will be about Brad’s dream of having a big family with lots of kids or something else. I would love to see how Jay Fosgitt draws Luann, Frank, Nancy, Puddles, Monstro and even Bernice.
This is just Disney meets Animaniacs with four fingers, and it’s so obvious it’s almost plagiarism. This artist needs to develop his own style and leave Luann alone.
Oh, and thanks for turning Toni (one of the best characters) into a self-absorbed, air-head bimbo whose imagination of a perfect life is having a child slave to wait on her hand and foot. Good luck with that with Brad for a husband and your shared genetics with Jonah!
You can’t blame the guest artist for the content of this week’s strip. That’s all on Greg and Karen. The change in artwork, though glad it’s not permanent, does not distract me. But the story line this week has been weird.
Tell Greg and Karen Evans that if they are contemplating retirement, they need to just end the Luann cartoon and let these other artists they like so much start up their own strip with their own characters. I would rather see the end of Luann than see it murdered like this.
It’s ‘the dream’. Thinking how ‘perfect’ life would be if they were raising Shannon (or a kid of their own). I think every prospective parent has a version of this fantasy before reality sets in. It’s a major wake up call to be walking the floors with a colicky infant, to bring home a new born and not get adequate sleep for weeks, that first toddler temper tantrum in public, and all the other ‘joys’ of parenting that people somehow forget about while they are having this perfection dream.
Please…! Life like that would be just another version of slavery for a kid. I knew some individuals in life like that and all of them wound up either with all kinds of trouble dealing with the real world or winding up in bad marriages or relationships. I knew just one that remained happily married for over forty years, and he had met a woman just like him! What were the odds?
I have found this to be a charming arc and, for me, the humor lies in the fact that when anyone has a daydream or a fantasy such as this everything does look perfect!
check the the June 24 (monday of this week) panels. the first panel drawn by Fosgitt is Toni’s thought balloon which continues. The last panel today seems like a hint that she will wake up from this daydream soon.
I think the guest artist is doing a phenomenal job presenting this fantasyland in Toni’s mind. The art is very solid—-characters are consistent, the line work flows and demonstrates the dynamics of movement well and faces are expressive. While I enjoy Greg’s style more, I believe this artist has a very bright future and would love to see more of his work.
Well, it WAS a fantasy. Some aspects could’ve been true, IF Brad, and, Toni were raising Shannon full time. She’d certainly be better behaved. And, would have a cell phone for emergencies only. But the Felix Unger, Doogie Kamealoha stuff, well….
Hope this is end of this series. I like Greg’s art much better, where they look like themselves. I think this week was kind of strange actually, and boring. And no one wants a child like that. LOL.
This is not a reply to any post in particular, just an observation from a cartoonist’s perspective. I’m both amused and dismayed by the number of commenters who don’t see this week (and the one coming) as a tongue-in-cheek lark. It’s a “let’s get stupid” creation. Greg has a dry wit that he delivers with a straight face or a mischievous smirk. I have taken pause in person with Greg when he’s dropped such a comment and it’s taken me a moment to get what he’s doing. Brat! That’s what this is about and Jay’s skill at rendering a hyperactive dream-come-true little girl drives home GnK’s intent. This ain’t forever, folks! It’s just a fun off-road detour. Believe me, no one wants to see a return to regular art more than me ‘cause this style takes 3x-4x longer to color. For the same pay!
i’d say toni is DEFINITELY dreaming because shannon isn’t that independent or mature. She loves using her phone, loves watching tv, playing on her devices. And she loves to stay up late.

If Gregg and Karen are going for “in your face” foreshadowing of adoption, this is a pretty good example of what they could do.
