I’m back. Very little pain involved despite having two implants done. But now I’m on a soft diet for the next couple months. After he did the first implant, I begged him to do the second one just to get it over with. Ah, well. Beggers can’t be chewsers…
Sean Bell adds: " I think [monitoring solar flares] is normally done with visual solar flare telescopes, and satellites positioned above the Van Allen Belts (having I don’t know what type of instruments). * For Burt to be able to use a hand held meter, I’m guessing the flare would approach the size of The Carrington Event – ‘…the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history, peaking on 1–2 September 1859 during solar cycle 10.’ (look up Carrington Event on Wikipedia)"
Ketchikan, Alaska, where I lived for many years, was too far south to see northern lights most of the time. There was one time when the lights were so energetic I stayed up til the wee hours of the morning watching, enthralled.
I do want to clarify from yesterday’s comments that I know EMF meters from electrician loved ones (and the Boy) checking outlets or small appliances for malfunctioning, a fuse going, etc. When I put it in Burt’s paw, as I sometimes give him a screwdriver, wrench, wire, etc, I imagined that Burt had been using one of these to check the outlets, connections, and equipment in the studio. He’s not using it in the panels or holding it up at random, it’s a chore Elvis is interrupting. I mentioned this in a thread above, but thought I’d put it here too, since sometimes folks have requested that I put comments in the main thread so that they can be seen more easily.
Fun fact, the Boy has an EMF meter and uses it to check the electronics in the house (and search for ghosts, hehe!)
Okay, now the synchronicity is going off the charts. Imagine if we didn’t have the preview? When she sent these strips in, Georgia had no way to know an unusually violent X-flare/CME would cause a dramatic aurora display that could be viewed during the very recent extra super full-moon, all the way down to Iowa. My spouse missed the spoiler, so it is fun to watch somebody reading it cold… no clue, just assuming everything is “normal”, well except for that bit of glitching………………..
Green light in the skies is could also means little green pesky aliens from outer space ya knows. When they is can makes green crop circles on earth they is can makes green patterns in skies also.
Every time there’s some fantastic event in the sky, like an eclipse, meteor showers, auroras, or whatever, the clouds roll in and I can’t see them. (The events. I can’t see the events. All I can see is the clouds. Stupid clouds! I’m gonna go yell at them.)
Well that, or some d@mn kids out in the woods on the edge of town didn’t properly care for their camp fire and now we are segueing into a new story line, full of mystery, full of danger and full of goofy cats.
Beatrixia: Thanks for giving us a lift to Afar, Kara. We really appreciate it.
Kara: You’re welcome. It’s always nice to take a trip to learn more. It’s what we camels do.
Bea: Have you heard anything about the Portentous Wind? Do camels have any legends about it?
Kara: We all learn to expect the unexpected. Mainly we just keep calm and remember Hump Day always comes around. It also helps to have a scholar and a warrior mouse along.

Hmmmm… I still think Burt was checking Elvis… More importantly all of us in the science and technical world, we need to remember that this “EMF” (what Burt and the Boy are metering) ‘is electromagnetic field’, but EMF is also used for ‘electromotive force’ which is a measure of potential energy and therefore shares the unit “Volt” with voltage which is also a measure of potential energy. Presented without context, this can be confusing, especially in text. For clarity and brevity I will only mention in passing the 3rd use of ‘EMF’ on beach signs, meaning “extremely mean fish”.
I’ve seen the Aurora only once. I’d love to live where it was visible regularly except that all those places have real winter. I shoveled snow and got minor frostbite when my family lived in Illinois for 6 years. I was very relieved when we moved back to the Bay Area.
Using an EMF meter to check for ghosts is a fraud borrowed from unscrupulous window replacement vendors. They will take a light meter, suitably relabeled as a “heat loss meter” and “find” heat loss near your windows (where it is brighter).
A sensitive EMF meter set to its highest gain will almost always find stray electric fields in our modern environment.

Gorgeous!
I’ve seen the aurora in Rochester, MN, and Durham, NC. That last was energetic to be seen so far south.
