Janis cuddling and Arlo’s happy smile in Panel 1 and serious thoughts in Panel 4 all look like a nice after glow.

Janis (Joplin) is long gone, but Arlo (Guthrie) is still alive and kickin’.

It is sad losing people. Never understood defining your music as being from one era, instead of liking genres of music and learning about new artists, though.

Most of mine are! But I like the old classics, like Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Barry Manilow. Oh, wait – Barry is still around!

I had my music folder set to random last week, and Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison came up in a row. (Or more accurately, Big Brother, the Experience, and the Doors.) Kind of freaked me out.

Can’t help but think that this is the wrong thing to say and the wrong time to say it, Arlo.

I know, Arlo, and the ones that are still here, I don’t want to lose

I’m 74 and listen to a wide variety of music. Last month I went to a metal concert.

One of my sisters-in-law and I would do this thing where there was news about a big celebrity, either doing something or their death being announced, or something about how they had died some time ago — “What? I thought he/she was still living/already dead/died some time ago.” Such is fame — it often leaves long before the end of a career, let alone a life. Another thing I kept feeling is “there goes another great one, and I don’t see anyone worthy to fill his/her shoes coming up.” Our TV stars had years of performing behind them, going back to vaudeville, radio, and/or years of movies. They had strikingly different faces, styles, characters — the stars today seem like cookie-cutter good-looking flashes in the pan in comparison. Maybe it’s just a getting-old, generational thing, but I think I could show the difference by objective measures if I wanted to make the effort.

YOU are alive and that is all that matters at this moment.

Starting to get the feeling that when they make the move, JJ will sign off.

Not the best pillow talk topic I’v ever heard of.

These days it seems like I we lose another one each day. Before long there will only be “artists” writing bad poetry to increasingly redundant beats and stealing samples from the great rock and folk artists who actually were musicians and vocalists writing the great musical catalog. If people lack the imagination to write original music, then they should pay someone else to do it or get out of the business. (My rant for the day)

No nighty straps on Janis’s shoulder has my imagination thinking Arlo got lucky. The post whoopee conversation is not one I would pursue, but to each their own.

Bride and I have been married 36 years. She tells me we are happy, and I believe it!

These days I try not to think about that.

Looks like a lingering Kris Kristofferson trigger for a mortality check. Buddy Holley, anyone? Used to be airplane crashes, car crashes and drug overdose took our favorites. Now it’s ‘natural causes’. Well, if you live long enough that’s what happens. To all of us.

I do some of my best…and worst…thinking at night too.

The oldest Beatle (Ringo) is still alive, while the youngest (George) is gone (of course, George was older when he died than John ever got).

Reading the room this is probably not the place for this, but The Onion ran the following a few years back:

Welcome to classical music! Those of us who like classical came to that realization long ago.

Our musical tastes largely gel around adolescence, so most of the artists you would connect the most to are slightly older than yourself. At a certain age this does start being a problem for everyone.

Does Arlo realize how many Boomers in general are dead?

Myself, as I have written before, I can hear the knocking on the door.

And that number increases almost daily…

Also British actors who appeared in the Harry Potter films.

And the list keeps growing faster. I look back at my music from the 70’s and am amazed how old these guys are now. And how many have sung their last song.

Good night, Mr. Spouse. At our age it’s flabby fun, I’m just glad that we aren’t done.

Last week I pulled out my record of the Singing Nuns. They were all pretty young in 1958, some are probably still alive.
