This past Thanksgiving, my wife and I skipped over our normal annual ritual of naming the top 3 things we were thankful for, because they were always the same: each other, our 4 cats, and our nice home. Instead we went for #s 4, 5, and 6. Mine were appreciation for all computery things, appreciation for the good genes I got from my mom and dad, and the various “publics” (schools, libraries, and postal service). Really, like Hobbes, I’m mainly just grateful for how lucky I’ve been.
If Calvin was a real boy, he would wish he had siblings especially a brother, clearly Bill Watterson doesn’t know what it is like to be an only child because he was not an only child.
Calvin, some of us are just happy to be alive. Take my friend, for example. He, his wife and 2 kids, are homeless (since the beginning of April this year) and on a long waiting list to get help. It could be almost a year before someone actually gets off their lazy rear end to arrange a more permanent home for them. (Long story short, I’ve already contributed ALL my life’s savings to keeping them alive since this started, including stays at hotels. So, don’t think for one second I’m not doing anything to help.) This all would not have ever happened if my friend’s landlord hadn’t run afoul of the law, used my friend’s house as leverage to bailing the landlord out of their own legal battle and, in the end, not even giving my friend the required 90 days notice (didn’t even give 30 days, either).
Cal’s ‘list’ [read book] already comprises several pages, none of which he is likely to get. He does it to fluster his folks and hoping he’ll get the stuff he really wants.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again. When you strip away all the trivia, all we have left is ourselves and each other.
I watched my dog as he sat in the yard yesterday as he watched the birds. He has food, shelter, us and a tennis ball. He’s probably happier than the whole lot of us.
In Canada our Thanksgiving comes a bit earlier but between the US and Canada I mostly think about how fortunate We are. we have a nice home. Not large but all ours. We have our health again. 2020 to 2023 we really hard on my body having been cut open three times. Yes, i appreciate universal health care. That said I have contributed 10’s of thousands of dollars to it. We have food in the pantry and are able to donate money to those in need through two local organizations who are able to get most of the donations out into the streets. Our kids are hard working tax paying citizens. What more could we want? OKAY a 63 Corvette would be so cool, but unnecessary. Not sure I could get back out of one.
I was trying to tame a feral cat and leaving some tasty food out for her. One day a rather large bobcat found the food — he LIKED IT, came back for more. I think I could have tamed him too, but the wife said no. I did tame the beautiful little kitty.
I remember, meticulously, writing each wish with perfect spelling. The sears wishbook had all the pages dog eared and worn. If only the generation today could experience some of that excitement. Why they call it Christmas magic.
I have a cat like that. Four square meals a day and a minimum of 5-minutes daily “lovey dovey” time and she’s good. I tried buying her a $35 cat bed. No, thank you. (What WAS I thinking?)

How about a snow sculpture in his likeness? With other snow creatures bowing down to him?

The sad thing is that it could read "What more could a [insert any species except “human”] want?"

Calvin should be happy. Hobbes just paid him the best possible compliment.

Hobbes needs to get into the true spirit of Christmas – greed.

Hobb’s would like a pass to Spearmint Rino, it would be like grazing at a buffett.

I’ve got everything that a tiger could want. I’ve got more than I could ask for. My best friend he’s all right. My best friend is clean out of sight.

Hobbes is happy. When you’re happy, you’re not for want. You just can’t ask for anything more than that in life.

Tuna. I was sure he’d say tuna.

The only present Hobbes really wants is to pounce on Calvin when he gets home from school, to show his affection.
