I can change a flat, but I still call AAA. That’s what I pay them for. You wait a half hour for them to get there and then it takes them 5 minutes. Without me having to crawl around on the pavement.
Do you know how to change a tire, Ladies? A lot of girls never learnt, because they were taught to expect that a man would come along and do it for them.My Dad showed me how to do it, and I was glad, when I went to pick a couple of teenage-girls up from a party, and THEN had a flat tire. 90 minutes away from home, in the middle of the night. Thanks Dad! Good for you, Luann. I like that she is girlish and foolish as most teeagegirls, but not stupid and helpless!
Uh-oh, looks like Luann is ensnaring Jack using the D.E.N.N.I.S. System. She’s flawlessly executing Step One, though I doubt she’ll be able to bring herself to do Step Two.
It seems likely that some help will be needed – and there’s a long list of Luann characters that might drive by and stop to help. Toni would be at her best in this situation – and Luann has done Toni plenty of favors by taking care of Shannon. Not sure Gunther would be very helpful.
Yesterday, the truck had 5 spoke rims. Today, it has 4 spoke rims. Must be special rims wherein one spoke retracts when the tire goes flat. Once Luann gets the tire changed, we will have to see if it goes back to 5 spoke rims.
This is why I dislike the Liberty Mutual insurance ad. A parent should make sure that a child can do a tire change before getting a driver’s license. If you want to call AAA then do it but you should know how to change the tire.
If she can change a tire she ought to have a clue where the jack & spare are. AAA is a good option since he already has it. When I was 25, and in my prime, I hurt my back big time changing a tire on my 55 Chevy Bel Air. Was plagued by it for years. Of course I couldn’t afford AAA at that time and would have been too macho to do it if I could.
We are out in Death Valley, friend is driving. He decided to go down a sharp gravel path. We come back on road and tire is flat, thankfully ONLY ONE TIRE FLAT! No way to get AAA, no signal, but people did stop, which was nice. He had no problem changing it. Luckily his wife had bought a bunch of bottles of water before we left.
A couple of comments:• Looks like the writers have teamed up Jack and Luann as college friends with humorous potential opportunities; often while dating. Jack is an inherently funny guy. I think it’s a good fit for now.
• Some commenters have suggested that Jack is well off financially. The fact that he can afford the cost of maintaining a truck and AAA as a college student alludes to that possibility. It may also be that, as a sports scholarship jock, he may have AAA thru the school. Wouldn’t want their stars being injured changing a tire. (See my comment above)
I’m liking this turn of events. Yesterday I predicted Luanne would help but who knew she was so car savvy? The sad thing is that Jack ISN’T!!! Maybe she can teach him a thing or too. I like this side of her. Who says Luanne is boring??!!
Folks, please note we have a trolling imposter who has stolen S’Dog’s name and avatar. You can distinguish the real Dog from the fake: the fake is the GC Insider.
Yesterday, you could also distinguish them because the fake’s name on his profile was in all-caps. Today, he’s changed it to be exactly the same.
Big Strong Muscle Guy doesn’t know how to change a tire but his very cute potential, future “Love Interest,” DOES. Wow. Just WOW.
And You what the Sad part is? If Luann had been with Nil, Knute, Ox or Gunther, they probably wouldn’t know change a tire, either. Well Gunther might know how to change a tire in theory, but not actual practice. On the other hand, Les would how to put a vehicle up on blocks in order to steal the rims, having done so many times. (Sorry TRILOGY. I couldn’t resist)
This whole incident might be a positive step for Jack, showing his vulnerable side to a caring, sympathetic Luann.
AND Jack will have fun thinking of ways Luann can “make it up to him” if she accidentally drops that truck on his foot…..,
I find it a little sad that the reality of many folks not knowing how to change the tire on their vehicle is so very true. I am not saying everyone SHOULD change their own tire…. but I would think any legal driver should know how to do so.
With Jack not knowing “nothin’ about cars”, I am glad that Luann knows. But…. with Jack’s apparent lack of knowledge…. I would also anticipate that he would have spent little or no effort at assuring that the spare tire (if even present) was up to snuff (functional, with air, etc).
So… thoughts for the future of this arc:
1) Will Luann simply change the tire and it will be a big success?
2) Will Luann have some sort of comedic struggle where she eventually gets it changed, but ends up thoroughly “grungy-mechanic” dirty in the process… leading to a change in the pizza date destination?
3) Will the story turn more tragic in some fashion, where changing the spare goes awry… such as the truck falling off the jack, or Luann not being able to be successful at changing the tire (the spare is flat, cannot get the lugnuts off, etc)?
4) While it is likely that Jack will be more enamored with Luann than he already is…. because Luann has “mad tire changing skills”…. will Luann be more or less enamored with Jack through this turn of events?
+ + + + +
Finally… just a small aside…. I mentioned yesterday the noticeable proliferation in Jack’s use of contractions. It is also apparent that he is fond of dropping off consonants at the ends of words ("nothin’ "). If I had a wish that could be granted (I know I do not)…. it would be that this newer aspect of his character would diminish. Not really a huge deal…. but for me it is a distracting aspect of his character at the moment.

thanks to all those who supported me against the recent trolling episode! I appreciate your efforts, not just on my behalf, but also in keeping our community safe for all, and sending a message that this type of behavior will NOT be tolerated! Again, my heartfelt thanks!
The implied sexism is this comic really grates. Luann knows how to change a tyre because a man taught her. Brad would never say say “I know how to change a tyre because my dad taught me”, he’d just say “I know how to change a tyre”.
When I was learning to drive, my grandfather’s rule was that before I could drive his car, I had to be able to change a tire and change the oil. I think that’s a good rule for any kid. You should know the basics before you reach adulthood.
Back in the days of bias-ply treads ( not radials) and even re-treads ( which were quite popular to save money), changing a tire was a much more common thing than today. In some ways I can’t blame the younger generation for not knowing how to do this, as it may come up so infrequently.
Unless she’s really strong (or has a long breaker bar available) Luann might have to borrow some of Jack’s muscles for the final process, and possibly the initial loosening process, as according to the Ford F150 forum, the lug nut torque specs for those alloy wheels is 150 foot pounds.
Let’s be fair here. It’s GOOD to know how to change a tire but not everybody SHOULD change a tire. There have been people hurt and worse doing so. Some “folks” are just plain technically and mechanically “challenged,” and should leave such things to people that know what they’re doing.
To tell you the truth, I don’t know what’s up with Luann’s lack of patience here in not waiting for AAA. Is she that hungry for pizza or does she just wants this "date’ over with quick?
And if its the latter, then WHY did she agree to go out with Jack in the first place?
Will any true fan be able to show a strip in which Luann ever expressed the slightest interest in what Brad was doing with his car, or in which Brad ever taught Luann any useful skill at all? I strongly suspect today’s strip is a complete retcon of Luann history.
Just a general comment, for those who wonder why Luann would not want to wait for AAA: I walk with a cane and have bad arthritis in my back and hands, so my tire changing days are long gone. Last year, I ran over a ladder that fell off a pickup truck before I could avoid it, and the tire was shredded. I managed to get my car into a parking lot and called AAA. It took 2 hours till help arrived; at that point, the guy said the wheel was too damaged to try to put the little tiny spare on it, and called for a tow truck. Another hour passed before it arrived….
Male or Female, AAA or not, a good thing to keep with your spare tire (check the pressure from time to time!) and jack, etc., is at least one pair of “rubber” surgical gloves. You still get the feel for, and the grip on lugnuts, etc., but if your hands get greased up, just pull off the gloves, and… voilà! Clean hands.
