Toni, is thinking about the big picture, Brad is Life Insurance, and no they don’t need a Health evals and Toni turning on Brad by talking about increasing her Folic acid intake.
My next door neighbor was living here and working as a roughneck on an oil rig in nearby Wyoming, He had married his high school sweetheart when she was 16. She dropped out of school because he was making so much money that she would never have to work. They bought the house next door to us and started a baby.
She was about five months pregnant when he fell off the oil rig, broke his neck, and died.
They had not thought about life insurance because they were 17 and 21. Death was something that happened to old people.
She had to let the bank foreclose on the house and her parents came and moved her back home with them.
I have to agree with Uncle Kenny. I was 9 and my late brother was only 4 1/2 when our Dad died during surgery. He had just made his first payment on the house we’d moved to, after living in an apartment for years. We were really fortunate that he had mortgage insurance, because my late Mom didn’t work at that point and she would never have been able to manage a mortgage. He had life insurance, but it wasn’t enough. Very fortunately for us, Social Security pays money to minors who have lost a parent (and THIS is one of the reasons why the fund is in trouble, actually, not just because of us old folks.) Yes, everyone needs life insurance if they’re starting a family, and they need mortgage insurance, too…
I get the idea. We are moving from lighthearted humor to a serious textbook exploration of human reproduction. Come on, just let them get down and dirty.
Toni lost her parents at a young age. He brother struggles as a single parent. She wants to do as much as she can to forestall any big disasters in their family’s life, to protect their child as best they can. Maybe Piro / Walt, far in the future, will make better choices than his parents.
^^^Just wanted to point out what a completely clueless comment Ivlax posted above. My sister in law is a paramedic with an underlying heart condition and just because she and her husband, (also a paramedic) and work highly physical jobs, still have to work to take care of themselves and their kids. Just because people appear “fine”, doesn’t mean they always are. Keep your clown town judgements to your self Ivlax.
since everyone else is overanalyzing thing…I’ll pick this baton up and say at least they’re enjoying the conversation and handling the discussion with maturity and good humor both.
More first world “problems”. People have been procreating for millennia, and even currently in many areas, without all this drama.
Interesting that two of Tonis top 3 concerns (and apparently Brads also, with the third being life insurance) are career and how to spend as little time as possible with their offspring (aka daycare)
This is not about life insurance, or careers, or folic acid. This is about Toni being scared s**tless and subconciously doing everything possible to avoid having a baby, no matter how much she wants it or not.
Luann is one of the best character and story development comic strips as of this date. Well keeping up with the times and dedicated fandom. Kudoos to the creators.
There is never a perfectly prepared time to accept the gift of life. Many young couples get caught in this trap to “have enough” before welcoming children. Here is the secret: YOU ALREADY HAVE ALL YOU NEED! Be Fruitful and Multiply!
Toni is the only one thinking about the financial burden of having a child? I call bunk! The Evanses had a chance to show more of Brad’s character growth and they cop out by making him look like an idiot. The man completely changed the trajectory of his life by becoming a firefighter; he changed his diet, exercised and studied hard to achieve his goal. He didn’t give up after being laid off due to budgeting. So, of course, he doesn’t give a thought to the challenges of having children and only thinks about the sex. Again, I call bunk.
Yeah, have fun! And don’t forget the life insurance. My dad got it ‘cause the bank loaned him money to buy farmland. Mom was a widow, but the debts were paid.
What a wonderful couple! Toni no longer show to have hesitations, the seriousness she has thinking about organizing her life and changing her diet to have a healthy pregnancy shows how determined she is. While the way they’re joke about it is a sign of how in love they are. Both she and Brad seem really happy. Let’s hope they manage to organize everything well and that there will be no healthy problems.
“Pre-natal nutrition.” What a scam. Is this a poor country or a rich country, with rich food on every corner? What she needs is couple counseling so that she feels safe and happy. Far more important than eating politically correct food.
Actually being firefighters in the same house life insurance should definitely be one of the first things that pops into their heads. That and appointing a guardian to raise the kid if something happens to both of them.
Again, Toni is being smart. Remember, she has a good model of bad parents, Shannon’s folks. She does not want to be like that, and she is proving what a good parent she’ll be. Some may question life insurance and the medical questions, but Toni’s parents died when she was young in a car crash, so of course she’s thinking ahead. Stuff happens, and she wants her child to have as good a life as possible.
Just curious. Are they going to wait while these goals are being met? And what happens to a healthy relationship or marriage when the sex becomes “goal” oriented?
I’m not so sure Toni is quite ready to give up her career. She loves her work and she’s good at it. What is the regulation about pregnancy for firefighters and EMT’s? Are they immediately taken off the active duty roster?
Life insurance is absolutely something you need to think about. If one of you dies after the kid is born, there needs to be a pot of money. Fire department should have some basic life insurance anyway.

Can’t believe they’re doing health evals. They’re both young and obviously in good shape.
Bottom line.. they’ve both been raising Shannon for years. They know what they’re doing.

Adequate Folic Acid intake reduces the risk of spinal bifida, which may be a side effect of our paleo hominid ancestors losing their tails.
