Calvin may not know what happened in Concord in 1775, but he knows where he’s going to be sent to in 10 minutes.

Nothing happened in Concord in 1775. Concord didn’t come into service until 1976. I used to live under the flight path to Heathrow, and I could hear the thing as soon as it turned into the path.

I once flew on the Concord, does that count?

Calvin struggles to add 5 + 7. How did he get the 220 years ago right?

I had to memorize that for my fourth grade class back in 1964. I can’t believe that I still remember it. I also had to memorize “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, which I also still remember.

Now at 30 years later, we still don’t know…if Concord is on Neptune.

If I had a student like Calvin at that grade level who wrote like that, I’d suggest he be advanced at least 2 years. Would solve 2 problems. It would raise the class average and lower my blood pressure. : )

I’m thinking Miss Wormwood gave context, but he wasn’t paying attention.I was like that too at that age. History was disjointed and unrelated. But that is bc we focused on colonial times up till Civil War, then a new year, back to the beginning.

And besides, lots of things happened in any given place in any given year. There is still probably lots of documentation for the events of 1775 in Concord. Do you want a complete account of everything that happened from January 1st to December 31st?

Don’t know what happened in Concord in 1775, but in 2024 nobody wanted to play that game so Sony shut down the servers after two weeks.

I so totally agree with this comic strip. While some historic points are important, others not so much. Even as I was in school I realized that who was President in such and such a year meant zip to earning a living or being able to learn valuable skills… and that memorizing the names of state capitals was useless. While it is good to improve one’s ability to memorize, that was a waste of mental energy that could have been used for memorizing far more important facts that would prove useful later in life.

I was taught by my parents that learning principles and concepts was far more important than learning trivial facts. Knowing that it is deadly dangerous to cross a train track while the lights are flashing is far more important than memorizing the weight of the train. ;D

If Calvin were a real 6 year old and not a comic strip character, he’d be a genius of high level. All the imagination, creativity, mischief points to that. His teacher fails to challenge Calvin and channel that genius into more education and knowledge. Instead, a kid like Calvin would be bored to tears with an every day curriculum. Here Calvin has no way of knowing the importance of Concord. As politics are today, our children must need to know about our Founders and their fight for our independence. They may well need to do it again.

Miss Wormwood is going to love this essay test response from Calvin… Hahaha

I would like to know what happened in Concord in 1775. I saw Calvin there, but that was it.

Besides, that kind of history lesson is a little too advanced for first grade.

It so happens that I was recently at the Concord battlefield. I found it very interesting
