You should stick to the Trek themes. I’d go with Kirk like Bets suggested over a year ago. Or maybe Miles O’Brien. Or perhaps even the Borg, “Hugh.”
And You Les. If You’re going to stick around and be a PITA, for the rest of the week, I would suggest “Q” for you.
No WAIT! The Joker! Les would be a natural! Just dye his hair green, dab on some white make-up apply some red lipstick and put on a purple suit and viola! And Les? Rumor has it Tiff will arm wrestle Luann to play Harley Quinn.
Oh. And Ox is going as Bane, Jack is going to go as Superman and Nil will go as Venom and Bernice is going as Dorothy. And of course, Ann will go as the Wicked Witch of the West. ;)
Under the empty white expanse of where the comic would normally be, it says “buy a print of this comic”. No thanks – I have reams of blank, white paper already.
Bets rocks in her Uhura costume, although more leg should show. I like Gunther in his well-endowed Batman costume, although Thor would be better, and I really like Leslie’s funny double-entendre funny punch line. This is a well-drawn and funny set of panels, a real relief from Luann downer recently.
Looks more to me as if it’s for people lacking in imagination. When we were kids we didn’t need fancy costumes or props to imagine we were in a Star Trek episode or Fantastic Voyage or Mysterious Island or The Lost World or Threat Level Midnight or cops and robbers… we just pretended and bam! There we were.
My sympathies to anyone who can’t see today’s strip. Is there a consenious whether the problem is limited to mobile users, Mac? PC? I use a PC and have had no problems.
As to whether Gunther should go as Thor or Batman I’m reminded on an old phrase that I never actually heard anyone use, but….“skin to win!” Go as He-man.
Is Betts looking that the imaginary six pack Gunther is showing in that Bat outfit, or, maybe she’s looking at something further south. (And, wishing Les would go away someplace, and, not comeback for a couple hours at least.
Nowadays Les, you can make a whole income of being geek, dressing up in costumes and complaining about things you don’t watch. The world is getting even more nuts.
Last week the Evans’ ridiculed Luann with Jack and Bern providing snarkisms. Who will get “the treatment” this week? Probably Gunther; maybe Les (if he deigns to try a costume).
I predict another summer doldrums set of strips this week. I.e., an episode going nowhere and advancing no one.
Interesting point/counter-point on cosplay, applies to the re-enactment world too to some degree. Both re-enactment and cosplay people have dedication and imagination along with a love for their hobbies. To outsiders, as Les points out it’s why? The biggest delta I’m seeing between cosplay and re-enactment players is the re-enactors build their kits to a historical standard, have a historical story, and get to play with their toys.
Wow! I see Gunther more like Robin. (Kidding’) Wonder if Les will get involved or just be the commentary peanut gallery! We may get to see more of the gang if they join in. Will this extend to Halloween? That is a real stretch! ;-)
Who else will be on this “panel”? Discussion on costuming may involve many ideas. If they need models, who will show up or will they try to use Les as a model. That would be hilarious! ;-D
After almost a year of relentless pain, suffering and near endless drama, G&K have finally depicted three young people actually attempting to have some degree of of what could pass for “fun.” Even though Les is having that “fun” at Gunther’s expense as usual. But the GOOD news is, Les is being all but ignored. At least for now.
Now THIS the Bets I want to see from now on. Smart, Bright-eyed, Enthusiastic, having FUN with ZERO drama. In fact, she can wear that Uhura outfit 24/7 EVERY-TIME she appears, as far as I’m concerned. Oh. There is on more costume Bets, Tiffany and Luann could rock: Green Orion Slave Girls! And BEFORE anybody starts, it was revealed in an episode of Star Trek Enterprise, that the “slave girls” WEREN’T “slaves” but actually RULED all the males of Orion (And ANY other Male they came in contact with) through clever use of pheromones. The women pushed the notion of being “submissive property” to lure in victims.
Now. That said, Les trying on a costume in 3….,2….,1…., ;)
1. The GoComics, comic no-show for me appears to be browser related. I could not see any of the comics (but could see the comments) yesterday or today until I read a comment to try a different browser…. and Schrodinger’s Dog suggested Firefox…. and now I can see comics (using that Browser).
2. I am NOT a big fan of the term COSPLAY. It grates on my nerves in the same way a lot of shrinking of words and mashing of syllables in “current, trendy” terms does.
3. I tend to think the EVENTs where you gather in costumes such as this sound very interesting and enjoyable….. but I am not sure about what they are really like….. are they big and almost “convention” and “carnival” like… with vendors and games and what not? I tend to imagine the “Trek Conventions” that I had oft heard about over the last few decades…. is it like a “Trek Convention” that has now morphed into this?
4. As you can tell, I have never been a part of whatever this is…. the best I can state about my costume wearing…. is that I have worn a few costumes at few libational Halloween parties…. “pirate”, “biker”, “rat”, “pirate/biker chimera”, "pirate/biker/rat "tri"mera".
Final question…. so these types of events (cannot bring myself to use that term)…. do they tend to be strictly themed or are they broad based? I mean, it looks like what Gunther and Bets are going to has somehow mashed some sort of comic book character theme with Star Trek as a theme. Would there likely be others at this even that wear “SteamPunk” or other costumes not of the Star Trek or comic book varieties?
Inappropriate, disgusting, and whatever, but I’ve never let that stop me before, so in my first impression of Gunther, I see a Thanksgiving turkey with all the stuffing shoved up his butt.
Last con I went to there was this dude who pulled off an awesome Mr. Gray. I called out to him “hey! nice Luann cosplay! you totally pulled off Mr. Gray!”… but he just looked at me funny and went into the hotel management office. I didn’t think he supposed to be in there but the lady behind the lobby check in didn’t seem worried that he was there so I I didn’t worry about it.
Anout Bets thighs:My adolescent memory of Lt. Uhura was that her uniform barely covered her hoo-hah, which is why she wore black tights. So that her “undiscovered country” remained undiscovered. Since one shoukd never trust one’s adolescent memories I googled images of Lt. Uhura and indeed her costume was very short. There was a good 6 inches or more of thigh showing. So Bet’s knee-length costume is wildly inaccurate. Pity because Bets’ legs are well worth admiring. But the question has to be why is Greg drawing her costume so wrong. It’s not as if miniskirts on young girls (or even middle-aged women) is shocking or offensive to the readers of funny papers. Miniskirts are all around us, as are short-shorts, spaghetti-strap blouses with scoop necks (referring to Luann’s oddly matronly outfit of last week.
What’s really wrong in the last panel is that Bets is standing to the side of the audience and slightly back. From that position one leg ought to obscuring part of the other leg and not standing side by side. The length of her thigh is open to question but if her hip ends where Bets has her hand then I think we can say she’s short legged but not that she’s missing her thighs entirely.
And while this is a throw-away week of gags it has been fun. And I’m not ready to return to either Tiffany or mean Bernice.
Is it just me or is bets subtly gazing at the HUGE lump in gunther’s…..down stairs. I bet she wants to take the boy somewhere private and let him “boldly go where no man has gone before.” (Presuming she’s still a virgin.)
