I remember an article published pre-internet (sorry, no link) in which people in Glasgow were shown a head of lettuce and asked what it was. Nobody knew. There is no reason to believe they were ALL just trolling the people doing the study, which was in connection with research into the high heart disease rate in Scotland.

Also boring since nothing is happen bit people standing around talking. If we had cut to TJ cooking last week would have had some action going on. Like chopping veggies with or without losing a finger, tossing the skillet to mix the veggies with or without losing the load, Some lovely kitchen aid porn, and Tiffany flirting with her boss.

“Is Bets flirting with Les?” – if G&K go with character continuity, remember Les is the robo-date she ejected on. Said he was a liar.

Just about everyone else – I thought eggplant was the universal underground symbol for a Stephen Colbert joke – or was it James Corden? But I digress.

I agree with that person at the top of the page that posited that G&K have simply thrown out character continuity.

Bets this stupid is no match for Gunther. And that’s before we remind ourselves that Gunther is, among his multitude of talents, also a cook.

None of this makes any sense.

I get so tired with impatient old farts whose projection is so bad they can only come up with tired old tired clichés. Jeez can’t y’all give it a break? I think this is kind of a generationally sly sarcastic send up of late Millennials (not Zoomers because Luann has been a teen-ager in Luannverse, so having her and her fellow characters being born in the early 80’s to the late 90’s fits with Millennials better than Z) who have been introduced to and are used to such processed, definitely not fresh veggies. I mean Bets with her OBVIOUS DOUBLE PENILE ENTENDRE joke about the cucumber and her comment about the deep-fried in panel 1, along with Mr, Cheez Whiz is so obvious. I don’t appreciate them being called idiots on veggie recognition by the way, what generation’s food delivery and marketing and educational system taught them this anyway? People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. One thing many Millennials and Zoomer are interested in environmentally cleaner solutions, contrary to our best/worst example (notice how many morbidly obese older people there is for example) so perhaps this portends some kind of vegan based marketing model. Who knows but generational “these kids today” projection can be aggravating, not sorry.

Les brings up a point. People traditionally make fun of British food, saying it’s bland and tasteless. Actually, much of it is just fine, but the Brits seem to go out of their way to give their food names that sound revolting. “Bubble and squeak”? “Toad in the hole”? “Spotted dick”? “Mushy peas”?

(We may eat mushy peas here too, but at least we don’t go putting that name on the label in bold letters.)

Everyone I knew understood what a vegetable is. Is Dez growing some kind of crazy hybrid garden so nothing looks like that it should? Les with all his experience working in and around the kitchens should know this. This whole thing is just confusing.

Does Evans really have that low of an opinion of young adults? I would say that the current generation of 18-24 year-olds are way more educated on healthy options than the previous several generations. My grandparents wouldn’t have known what an avocado is, or kale chips, falafel, kombucha, quinoa, chia seeds, etc. Sure, characters like Les exist, but someone like Bets wouldn’t be feeding herself with microwaved junk.

I’m not getting this arc at all. Dez worked her butt off to grow fresh, organic veggies. It kinda made sense for her to give some of it to TJ. He’d know how to prepare the veggies (and what they are!) but why the heck would TJ give the produce to Les, the person least likely to appreciate it? I’m surprised that Les didn’t just dump the fruits of Dez’s hard work in the garbage can or the compost bin. “Don’t know what this junk is, not gonna eat it”.

Gee whiz, TJ, if you were going to hand over the veggies to some random person, why not Luann? She could give E-Z stew another try, and this time, using a lower grade and fattier cut of meat, and ensuring that the shaker lid on the pepper is screwed on correctly. Luann could at least try to make something delicious out of the veggies (which probably would taste great in a stew!)

    But Les? Pearls before swine!

Cooking for yourself can be a very life-affirming and delicious pasttime. You can control portions and seasonings exactly to your taste. You can make enough to freeze various dishes and not have to cook for a week. Even rice keeps well, if frozen. It is a survival skill and makes your home a more pleasant place to be than impersonal, neon-lit, fast food joints.

My parents had a large garden (over an acre) and canned everything we didn’t eat right out of the field. So I know a lot of vegetables by sight. But there are lots of people who didn’t have the spare land to farm or didn’t have the time to prepare meals from scratch. I’m thinking particularly of a single mother trying to raise a family. Since she has to work all day at one or two jobs to make ends met it is likely that her kids were feed cereal for breakfast, peanut butter adn jelly sandwiches for lunch and frozen pizza for supper — because the mother never had the time or energy to cook from scratch. So kids growing up in that environment who have little experience with vegetables fresh out of the garden.
