Hm, Vale, Seeing that you have an overgrown chin and small crown, no, you don’t look like someone who can write in a diary, much less, write. Methinks you are a connoisseur in writing football plays.
We’ve come off a pretty long and dynamic arc revolving around the Quad, Privacy/intimacy issues in the Quad and storage fallout from leaving the Quad on summer break.
I was hoping that we’d get back to Luann with something new but it looks like we’re due for another “Axel” sequence. Even so, Vale(?) looks like he has potential. He looks better than Jack did back in “Introduction To Art” class in 2015. This guy looks like he could give Oxford a run for his money.
P.S. Luann has the studied counselor look. Neutral dressed, forward leaning attentive posture, simple jewelry. A Margo Fogerty in the making.
Art history is one of Luann’s favorite subjects, so I’m thrilled to see how she will help doing this weird assignment. I’m just afraid helping students like this guy is really stressful for her, but she’s trying to do her job with a smile of trying to do the best of her. Luann is spending her summer like this, probably working non-stop. Let’s hope something good comes to her. Like an invitation from Tara, or Jack, to do something.
Jack looked pretty gross at Luann’s first encounter – but we got kinda used to him and he got a bit less Neanderthal looking. But please don’t fix today’s new guy up with Luann. Give Lu a break.
I cannot understand why Luann gets such short shrift in her eponymous strips. Think about these other famous comic strips and how often they didn’t appear; Popeye, Little Orphan Annie, Alley Oop, Mary Worth Andy Capp and on and on!
Can they not come up with some dynamic arcs for her?
answer=no. but more art themes and this is an assignment that Luann might like to have so she’ll do a good job. That said, we have to look at this creature for a week (at least)… sigh….
So you pick an artist, find out where he lived, research his life and then write two weeks of made up diary entries. Today I painted a picture that I think am going to call Starry Night because I was out at night and the stars were bright and it made me want to paint a picture so I did.
That sounds like a dvmb assignment. The students would learn more if they studied what the famous artist actually did instead of making up something about that artist.
A relative tutored athletes as a uni job. Said they are of two extremes with few in the middle. Those who don’t care and want someone else to do it and those who knew what a college degree meant especially w/o student loans.
It’s nice to see a new character. Unfortunately a cliche of a dumb athlete. I hate that. I was a defensive tackle on the football team and also in the top 10% of my class.
Luann says what’s the problem? because she sees it as a cool exercise that she would like to do herself; she may end up doing it herself. Vale? he comes across as incompetant (and not exactly eye candy).
When dealing with Moose here, refer to it as “keeping a journal.” Call it a stereotype, but “diary” sounds more feminine while “journal” is more neutral or masculine.
Day 1:Slept with some of my fans again. I wish my fans weren’t so old. My daughter is bugging me to draw the latest Luann, but she didn’t bring my favorite drugs. My assistant went out to get some drugs for me. Did some interviews with the local newspaper. I don’t remember any of them. I got my drugs and my daughter is bugging me to draw the latest Luann. Some guy that is all jaw. Easy peasy. I miss the old days when I used to care.
Even if Luann us able to walk Lockjaw through his course assignment nobody going to care because Vale is such a dismorphic, repulsive character, as the comments today make very clear. Vale is not destined to be a part of the strip so his and Luann’s action are completely meaningless. Greg would be better off bringing Knute back as a community college in need of tutoring and doing from the old Fogarty-Knute routines.
Seems Big Guys are the last group that can be stereotyped in a bad light. Big dumb jocks in Luann do tend to age well same with hot girl firefighters. Jack, Ox & Toni are deeper than the main characters recently.
I wonder how many characters get drawn before a new one is chosen to be in the strip? A dozen,….. a hundred? I wonder what all the “rejects” look like?
At a minimum, we can appreciate that Vale is a New Character, seemingly even bigger than Oxford. I suppose Vale is a football player. I’ll bet now that Luann fails again, in every possible way.
I recall a similar incident in an earlier life of mine….
This is cool artwork on this new character. A jock, obviously, but perhaps not entirely a stereotype. Time will tell. And I don’t think either Greg or Karen hates anyone in this strip. They are just used to working in broad archetypes. It’s time to let Luann grow up and spread her wings though. I don’t really care if Karen likes or doesn’t like it. She needs to get over it and understand that SHE is not Luann and let the character develop and change. Time to cut that cord and let go.
So, the P is for Pitts? I guess it’s the community college. Could it be the high school? Axel was in high school, right? Sadly, nothing new for Luann. Not even the storyline. Another jerk boy that doesn’t really want help. Would be refreshing to meet someone who wanted to be helped. Ugh. Why is Luann still in community college? Couldn’t she have transferred with credits to Mooney? Nothing moves forward with her.
