Reminds me of a news report I saw some years back – they were interviewing a roofer during a heat wave and he was saying how his work was so hot because he was closer to the sun. Yeah, because 93 million miles minus 30 feet makes such a difference!!!

I was expecting “because warm air rises.” Sometimes it is cooler in the valleys because the cold air settles.

It’s true. That’s why the top 30 observatories are at altitudes over 10,000 feet… so they’re closer to the stars.

True Story. I once had a boss who would turn the heater vents to point towards the ceiling in the winter (the heaters were already located near the ceiling). We would get a ladder and point them down towards us since the building would get so cold. One day he came in yelling about us turning the vents towards the floor because we were wasting heat. We tried to explain to him that heat rises and pointing the vents towards the ceilings were of no use. He argued that heat falls and cold air rises and that is why there is snow on the mountains. Yes, he really said that. We gave us and just wore coats inside all winter.

I visited my brother in Colorado (high altitude) a year and a half ago. I noticed that the temperature difference between when the sun comes out, and goes behind the clouds is quite drastic. I doubt the relatively small percentage of distance to the sun has anything to do with it. My theory is that there’s less atmosphere to protect you up there.

Evil? Or just outsmarting her?

If Danae spent a little more time studying in school she wouldn’t fall for this.

The only time I’ve seen a bird burst into flames was during a thunder/lightning storm … several hours after sunset. OTOH, Kate’s explanation makes it perfectly clear why the summit of Mt. Everest, the “closest place to the sun” on the planet is perpetually covered with snow. LOL.

Also because heat rises!
