“The first time I realized I didn’t have anything to write because I can’t remember the things I’ve done and also because I back out on adventures I could have but am too scared to engage in them. What can I write? Why don’t I know what to write? Why don’t I ever say anything to a ‘friend’ who keeps insulting me? Why can’t I answer any of these questions?”
The weeks where characters sit around basking in the fact that nothing noteworthy ever happens to them to the point where they can’t even write about the first time something interesting happened… it honestly just astounds me in how frequently it’s the go-to storyline. For crying out loud, have them do something!
Here, I’ll do what Bernice “Miss Supposed Muse” couldn’t be bothered to and come up with a decent one that even someone as small-minded as Luann could do. The first time “I tried out for a school play” there’s one. The first time “I went to a concert” there’s another.
My first car was a used 1980 blue 4-door Chevrolet Citation hatchback. I bought it with my own money for $5,00.00 in 1982. It was Car & Driver’s car for 1980. I owned it from 1982 to 1990. I got it with 24,000 and let it go with 94,000 miles. This is the car I measured all my future cars against.
Just read “Luann Fan” from the creators, saying they’ll be doing a week of when Lu and Bee first met. Perhaps in response to our asking, " WHY are these two friends?"
Anyway, the letter; included past birthday strips. I’m not sure I should be glad or embarrassed I remember most of them.
“The first time I saw Earth from my spaceship. My father placed me in a capsule when I was three of your solar years old because our sun was about to go Nova and he sent me on a solo trip to an unknown (to me) planet….”
It’s more and more probable that Luann will end up writing something titled “The First Time I Realized I’d Be Better Without Having My So-Called Best Friend Since Childhood Around”. Or that thanks to Bernice’s unbearably sarcasm, she’ll end up writing something really powerful that will win a national award or get her noticed by some big publisher. Of course, one thing doesn’t exclude the other. It would be good even if she’ll just say to Bernice that if this is her way of helping her, then she better leave. But I fear that Luann won’t be able to break the chain that binds her to her “BFF”.
I generally don’t comment on comic strips but I can’t help but wonder what Luann gets from her friendship with Bernice other than hassle and heartache. All Bernice does is cut on her.
“When the comic strip launched in 1985, Luann was a 13 year old. Fourteen years later, she celebrated her 16th birthday in 1999. In 2013, she started her senior year of high school (one of the only times the strip moved in “real time”) and she graduated in 2014. In fall of 2014, Luann started college and turned 18. So how old is she now, ten years later? We think of her as a college sophomore, being 19ish for who knows how long. Stuck in her own Wonderland, I’m not sure if we should pity or envy her.”
Yeah, teachers hate that kind of wise-acring. An essay about essays, a project about project. Unless you have something genuinely novel to say, stick to something serious.
I guess I’m the only one who thought Luann’s idea (middle panel) was actually a good one. Mark Twain would have had a field day with that premise. Or George Carlin.
Franks’ decision not to waste money on a university education for Luann keeps getting vindicated. Even these ridiculously easy assignments are too much for her to handle. Maybe finger-painting is more her speed.
Sometime…well, all the time…I worry about Luann’s cognitive health. That kind of joke might be humorous once in awhile, but they portray her like that all of the time.
When will the authors allow Luann’s character some development? She hasn’t changed since high school? Also how many more years will she remain in community college?
Bernice reminds me of my wife, who constantly reminds me that the mockery is actually “constructive criticism” and I should learn to be more accepting of it
I hope one day the parents walk in to hear the way their freeloading guest is treating their daughter and lay down some ground rules or give her notice.
Luann would have had an easy out on that one – “An essay about the first time she wrote an essay about the first essay she ever wrote about writing for the first time”. If I’m counting right she would have had two essays she could use to cut and paste information from to finish this assignment, then next time she would have had three to use….on the same subject

Bernice saved her from getting a F on her assignment. Come on Luann. We all have our long list of the first time. Just pick one. Google for ideas.

There was a romantic ballad from the ’60’s called “The First Time” by Marianne Faithfull.
I wonder whatever became of her; she was quite popular in her time.

What will it be tomorrow? “The first pimple on my butt that I popped“? Or possibly “the first time I did not leave my bra hanging on my bedside lamp”?

You know?
I think one has to really hand it to Luann.
When it comes to Bernice, Lu practices great restraint.
Either that, or Luann is like someone that has a long term persistent ringing in their ears.
After a while, they just IGNORE it. ;-)
