Coming Soon 👀 At the beginning of April, you’ll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
Lemme see, now, would I rather be anywhere near a person who uses her outside voice when she’s outside, or a person who has no filters no matter where she is? Hmmmmm.
Perfect friends as I to explain, useless for so many here. This is a slap in the face exposition of why. Luann is an emotionally reactive ball of insecurity, Bernice by being her tendency to find the absurd in so much, she is the best daily remedy . Besides, Luann knows this ( or will) down deep. No they are real friends no artifice, just what they both need.
Reading comments by Bernice haters I noticed a common trait. None of you like being told the truth and consider that rude and insufferable. That’s what you see in Bernice. She says the truth and not afraid to. You prefer people ignore the truth and be polite and nice. The truth is not the point or important. It’s more important to play nice and go along with whatever is gong.
Haters? No. Dislikers, yeah but no cold blooded haters, you must have been reading La Cucaracha. I hear it’s considered an editorial cartoon in San Antonio.
Maybe there was a lawyer in Bernice’s family and that’s where she learned legal terms. Still, show me a kid who has never “weed” outdoors. I don’t think the police are just waiting around to bust a little kid for that.
It was already tragically clear that Luann would never be able to get Bernice off her back. Poor Luann. Interesting to see that the great friendship was born from a great dislike, I wonder if the scene will continue in the park or if it will move in the school. Maybe Bernice and Luann become friend joining their strength against Tiffany, or something like that. Maybe this arc will end for Valentine’s day, with Luann saying to Bernice that she loves her like a sister. Or with another break up on Valentine’s day.
Never let anyone interfere with your bodily functions, Luann. Since an incident in the third grade, I never let anyone tell me I can’t go…‘course I’ve learned better control since then…
For all the Luann Historians out there cross checking data points and obscure anachronisms…remember this is a fictional story being written by a college age Luann.
Also, because this bears repeating, this IS still a comic strip so maybe not take it quite so….seriously?
I don’t see Bernice as being especially obnoxious here. She’s just being open and friendly. And she reassured Luann that she won’t tell on her. She’s showing she wants to be friends by building trust. Luann is still embarrassed by her behavior and not sure about this new kid just yet. So often early friendships develop in just this way—-because one person wants it more and makes an effort that eventually wins the other person over. It explains a LOT about their friendship.
Seems many kids today don’t have an inside voice. Drives me crazy, especially in a restaurant or store. This arc is before they are commiserating in Luann’s bedroom March 18, 1985.
Now we know the real reason Luann has stayed friends with Bernice for the last 13 years. B has been blackmailing L with the threat of telling people that she was peeing in the bushes. Poor Luann.
In my opinion, I think many kids, especially kids good with vocabulary (like both Bernice and Luann) could say something like Bernice said at six. The way Bernice said it is also direct and didactic…. which is very much like how kids tend to speak at that age (with little to no nuance). And, from what we know of Bernice, she tends to have a strong focus on rules (usually) and therefore, her talking about the illegality of weeing at six seems very much in keeping with her character. Finally, though….. also notice her “But I won’t tell” statement…. that too is revealing….. she is trying to be both INSTRUCTIVE and KIND to Luann in her word and actions.
I can also see why Luann is upset. It would be difficult to be in that compromising position….. even when someone is being kind about it.
I think Bernice’s “Indoor voice” comment is cute too….. it reflects a term that she heard and is repeating…. and it is simply a kinder way to ask Luann to not yell/holler.
Boring, boring, boring. Get back to the dorms. Also, when, if EVER, will Luann have any vague resemblance to an actual relationship? She’s in college now and way past time to be dating and having fun at least, if not sex.
If Bernice and LuAnn live in the same neighborhood, why does Bernice live with LuAnn’s parents and not her own. I don’t recall why that would be. Does anyone know the answer to that? Inquiring minds want to know!
This is how many people make friends and even find a spouse. My Grandmother said she “wore down” my grandfather until he gave in and married her. Many people in my life did this to me too. This pattern is usually used on people who have been neglected and forced to fend for themselves as far as boundaries are concerned, like myself. So when you try to give a boundary they just keep pushing back until you give in and eventually accept the pushy manipulative person who does nothing but snip and snark as a friend. Then one day you just have enough, give them notice to which they respond, “All of the sudden I’m not good enough for you?” and they list a boatload of arbitrary faults and flaws, tell you that you only think of yourself and what you think and feel… etc.
“6 signs you may be dating, [or are friend with], a love bomber
They’re extremely affectionate right from the start. …
They put you on a pedestal. …
They want you to commit quickly. …
They surprise you with gifts. …
They continue to violate your boundaries after you’ve mentioned things you’re not okay with. …

WTH? No 6 year old kid is going to say “weeing outside is illegal”. Is Bernice training to be a narc?
It still seems like Luann would have been better off picking a different best friend.
.
This reminds me, In Sunday’s comic.. where were Mr. or Mrs. Fogarty?

Bernice just moved into that blue house, is 6, is in Miss Lee’s class, has lots to talk about, and also has a color-morphing forehead.

Indoor voice? Bernice was trained not to use her outdoor voice?

Agreed!, that bush behind her would be a better friend!

So far I’m not seeing any reason Luann would want to be friends with a jerk like Bernice. Also, didn’t Bernice used to have curly hair?

I dunno what is more concerning with this arc.
The fact that Luann and Bernice will become (Shudder) “best buds.”
Or the fact that there appears to be no nearby available restrooms. :+)
