Bern’s hair is at the wrong angle, therefore this entire story arc is invalid!!!!

Already they are sharing similar opinions (boys) and sharing a good laugh starts to cement the emotional relationship. Differences will follow. Let’s see how they will work them out.

I’m sorry, but it’s not realistic that Brad would leave a huge glob of icing on his face, while he is out in public with his friends.

They clearly just want him to come off bad.

I love that Brad became a fireman and married Toni. He’s definitely living his best life.

So the bonding of this friendship begins. They had auspicious start.

Well, they had mutual opinions of Brad so they bonded. Well, Luann, you and Bernice grew up and are now in your late teens, early adulthood, Brad married off. Are you revisiting this to explore what kind of friendship you have with Bernice now with Brad out of picture as a part of your bond. He’s not the same dorky and disgusting kid. He’s a firefighter with a gorgeous wife. So, now explore why you’re still friends with Bernice.

I wonder if Karen Evans had a (terrible) brother? I’d forgotten how brutal Brad and Luann were to each other when they were younger. He sure has changed.

Brad and TJ attended Elementary school together until the 6th grade.

So we’ll have to wait 7 years for Bernice’s next laugh?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone with “Oreo goop“ on their face. The icing inside an Oreo cookie is not conducive to sticking on someone’s face like that. Now if it was marshmallow, that’s another story.

But at least he and TJ eventually grew up—which is more than could be said for those girls!!

This reminds me of being with my friend Pam around the same age. We both had older brothers so we could relate to the brothers thing.

Luann is HUGE for 6 and Brad is 9?

Despite their differences, these two have a lot of common ground.

We’ve seen some lazy writing before, but good grief… This is a whole new level of mopishness.

They don’t look like 6 and 10-year-olds, not even close. They look much older than that. GnK had no difficulty drawing the little kids in Luann’s job at “Kidsz First”, so what’s the deal here?

So Luann “liked” Bernice because Bernice was condescending and contemptuous of Luann’s brother??

Sexism: a “solid” basis for a long lasting “friendship.”

The irony is, Bernice would soon turn that condescension and contempt toward Luann, and Luann would forever put up with it.

Bern’s war hero brother Ben, would eventually turn into a kinda dumpy old “Brad.”

And “kick” her out of her own home. ;-)

I love this! After finding a common “enemy”, Luann and Bernice discovered that they had a similar sense of humor, started liking each other and had a great laugh together. Honestly, this is a very nice way to start a friendship. The probelm is that thirteen years later Luann has grown up, her way of talk to others has changed and her sense of humor matured. It’s weird to say, but the one who seems unable of really growing up is Bernice. Now, will Luann write this kind of considerations about her BFF immaturity, making this assignment a true tragedy and Bernice VERY angry?

If Brad is about 9, why does he have stubble?

Before someone says they’re freckles, who has freckles across his upper lip?

Ha ha ha, just wait 10 years or so. And how did Brad get such a ridiculously large chunk of oreo goop on his face, and why hasn’t he wiped it off yet?

So, when does the tragic thing come into play?

They should have observed carefully the early designs. Now they’re kids with teenager heads.

Funny, as called for in a humor based cartoon based on a young woman, and her Luannverse and all that portends, which is well-done. Shared humor is the basis for the friendship, although, as unceaselessly noted here, Bernice’s acerbic wit can be very off-putting, but the friendship will stay strong.

At this point in the proceedings, I’m sold on the idea that G&K knowingly write Bernice as an irritating and unpleasant character for readers’ reaction and to create and stimulate reader engagement with the strip.

I’m sorry but Luann and Bernice do not look 6 years old here. They look about 12. Shannon is 6 years old and she looks it. I guess these artistic descriptions are being filtered through Luann’s memories. Hence Brad has always resembled a disgusting teenager in her childhood memories.

So they bonded over Bernice defending Luann from Brad’s bullying. I’m still not seeing the tragedy that Luann promised here.

My daughter and I have this conversation almost every day. When we talk about males it usually ends in “men are such disgusting animals”. Some of them improve when they become adults.

I’m was born a boy and just look at…..oh, I see what you mean.

I remember they did this same type of thing with Charlie Brown and the gang. Also Family Guy did the same thing.

Teach her the one about how those of the opposite gender “go to Jupiter to get more stupider.”

And he has stubble long before puberty. Weird hormones.

The often identified “Cooties” that girls think boys have at that age (and vice-versa) is what is being demonstrated today.

My five year old granddaughter has already developed that ‘beat it creep’ attitude. :)

Really enjoying this trip down memory lane! I can’t remember how I made friends with my friends back then, but I do remember that none of my friends were perfect, nor was I. My husband says boys pick friends by beating each other up first. Because boys. ;)

Doesn’t work for girls, though. In second grade, I beat up the boy next door because he was bullying my 6-year-old friend, and it did not change the fact that he was, and probably still is, a jerk. We did not become friends, and his mother hated me for beating up her precious widdle son. (Her excuse for his behavior: “Boys will be boys”. Ugh!)

This is just how my best friend and I would laugh about my older brother.
