My wife asked me to take our son clothes shopping before he started Second Grade. Kots of camo and sports related gear. She never even asked me to go with her again. I did not understand her anger. He was ready for the classroom, the field, or the woods.
Go ahead Darryl. Once Hammie gets a load of your fashion sense and your tendency to go large so he’ll be stuck growing into something until High School, he may be forced to try stuff on simply in self defense. (Don’t forget to take in the clearance rack!)
Since EVERYONE lives in t-shirts, baggy short and rubber shoes of some sort, the choices are narrowed down to a choice among twelve million graphic prints of the moment.
Ah, but it might be different if he’s alone with dad instead of with MOM and a sister or two. Especially if “trying on” means comparing the size labels, going up one for growth, and holding the clothes up against his body.
Is there supposed to be some kind of subtle implication here that Hammie has some sort of need where medication might help settle him down enough for him to complete simple, every day tasks?
Or are they simply poor parents who failed to instill any kind of self control in their son?
Back in the day, we would be measured and the clothes would be picked out and they would fit. Today, you can buy multiple pairs of the same size and they all fit differently – generally too tight, so they have to go back. I prefer the stores that have fitting rooms but those are getting to be fewer all of the time.
So was Darryl unaware of how annoying it is to take Hammie shopping till Wanda came out with her very colorful simile? And now he’s panicking based just on that?

That was my attitude at the time. “Change clothes in public? Forget it! Just return it if it doesn’t fit.”

Tell Hammie if he doesn’t get new school clothes, he can always wear Zoe’s hand-me-downs. ZOOM! Off to the store!

Not sure what the challenge is. A few pairs of shorts and red and black striped t-shirts. Done!

I bet Daryl will spend a more kid-friendly amount of time on clothes shopping than Wanda does. This could work out.

It’s all in the presentation to make it a challenge. Been there and did that with one of my daughters when she was about Hammie’s age.

Daryl will probably come home with more new clothing for himself than for Hammie.
