In addition to, “If it’s not a broom, leave the room,” we now also have, “If the switch is down, don’t stick around!” Vital information for all concerned. And, don’t forget, you learned it here! Yet another service of Cat Network!
Our toaster and rice cooker sit beside each other like an old married couple. The toaster goes to work in the morning, and the rice cooker does a shift at dinner time. I think the BCN crew would love the rice cooker: it’s becomes nice and warm while it quietly burbles as the rice simmers. I can tell when the rice is about ready just by the way it smells, but I’m not sure the cats would find it appetizing. Maybe if I threw in a can of tuna?
Goldie’s advice could also work for cats. If the tail is swishing then it may be wise to give kitty some cushion. So many critters and appliances display warnings when they need space.
Trouble doesn’t follow any of the cues and it makes me worry. He doesn’t respect the vacuum cleaner’s personal space and will stick his nose right at the suction! I have to unplug the toaster because he insists on getting on top of it, even if it’s on! He really lives up to his name. ;p
Puckmosis: Thanks for your help with cooking scrolls, Bev.
Librarian Beaver Lee Cleary: You’re very welcome, Puck. I’m always glad to help.
Puck: I remember making things from The Kitten Scouts Guide to Cooking and Camping. They say hunger is the best sauce.
Bev: It surely is.
Puck: Are you able to come to the s’mores banquet?
Bev: No. I’m attending a library conference. But I think Queen Mags is planning a banquet here, and you’ll all be invited. Now how a bit of coffee? It’s time for my break.
Puck: Delighted.
Server: Oh dear, it looks like someone mixed the coffee and hot chocolate by accident.
Well, you guys have done it to me again. I just spent the entire breakfast prep time going down the rabbit hole, reading everything from 5/17/2016 back to the beginning. Thank you for that, that was a wonderful trip. But now I’m surrounded by nine cats who want to know what could possibly be more important than breakfast.
I guess I’m lucky. My four ignore the appliances, both big and small. Except for the TV. Smudge and Imp like to get up on their back legs and beat up the TV.
Much like how my German Shepherd, Laci Jane, has formed an emotional bond with our vacuum cleaner. She barks playfully and wags every time her “friend” comes out of the closet, follows it around keeping it company while it vacuums the house, sniffing it periodically in a companionable way, and then gets on the couch and requests it brush her with the upholstery attachment.
I just love the smiling toaster face, with the toast slots looking like eyes to me, and the plug looking like a tail. Looks almost like a happy kitty in loaf mode.

Talkie Toaster is smiling. And he’s about to say, do you want some toast?

Learn the switch well. You don’t want to be asking which switch is which…

Goldie, that is some excellent deductive reasoning.

“If the switch is down, don’t stick around” joins, “If it’s not a broom, leave the room” as good advice for cats.

“Not being on the counter” doesn’t even rate a mention, of course.

And Goldie, I’d keep those cute little paws off the toaster, if I were you — switch up or down, it may be too hot.

Snuggle up to Ms.Toastie while she’s still nice and warm. When the tail’s wrapped around her, she’s sleeping.

Drat. We didn’t find out who the Woman was talking to when she aimed that bread slice at the toaster. Maybe she was talking to the toaster.

To stop goin’ bananas, Goldie’s come to say
Cats must approach the toaster in a certain way
To make bread toasty brown with a golden hue
Switch up is the best but is the worst for you
Well, the toaster isn’t too bad
Tho’ it flings toast loud and high-aye
With respect is how we treat it
Ora doesn’t have to beat it
But, when toaster’s switch is in a down state, says our very, very astute educator
Forget the counter and hop up on the refrigerator

Ours aren’t allowed on the counters. So of course they wait until we’ve left the room to get up there.

Also if the toaster’s tail isn’t plugged into the wall, as in the 4th panel, then it’s safe to hang out near the toaster.
Thanks, Goldie!
