Huh, comic’s a minute early again, cool. Anyway, it would seem those sparks between Bernice and Piro are starting to fizzle up again. I’m being pulled back to a couple of years ago when Piro gave that speech and alluded to one person who helped get through all of the hardships he faced without mentioning Bernice by name, but Bernice knew he was talking about her.
It seems that Bernice is still Piro’s focal point as a rescuer, despite how little she has done to earn it. I suppose we can compare her role in this to her previous one as a ’muse".
Piro get a clue. Luann is making it easy on you by alleviating your worries about who is going to take care of the kids. Bernice couldn’t do it and she would run out at the drop of a hat leaving Luann holding the bag.
Wayching 6 kids, who you have never seen before and at home is not the same as being with a group of kids around the same age in a facility that was made for this purpose.
And someone on another site said he would be thanking Bernice not Luann. Since we still have Friday and Saturday, it would not surprise me if Bernice ran down to the hospital to hold Piro’s hand.
I assume pa DeGroot is at work and ma DeGroot is at the Fuse. I wonder what will happen when they return home and find “they are running an uninsured daycare” gratis Bernice (who may not be there). Especially if one or two of them could teach Shannon a thing or two!
Gotta admire Bernice here; she’s rightfully giving Luann the credit for taking care of the kids—especially Alan! It looks to me that both girls are finally growing up.
I think an opposites attract thing is happening here. Take it from a hippie and her Viet Nam vet who fell in love with each other, Luann will not have anything to do with this budding relationship other than to watch and hopefully be happy for Bernice and Piro.
Okay, we have a great romance here. Hospital E.R. waiting rooms at night, snacking on potato chips and nasty coffee from vending machines, maybe even grabbing a hot dog at some gas station on the way home. A bleak future if these two stay together.
What changed was that Luann came dangerously close to having a romance arc, which would have made her the center of attention for a while. Karen simply would never stand for that.
I thought I’d make a list of the characters I don’t hate in this strip.First of all, I love Luann, it’s why I keep coming back to this strip even when for the last decade she hasn’t been treated well.
I don’t hate Knute, Crystal or Delta who are no longer part of the strip. I liked Knute for his irreverence to all things excepting Crystal. I liked Crystal because she was very centered and very chic.
I liked Delta before she became a one-note character. I’d still like to see her back, just a bit less of the SJW thing.
I like Gunther, Dez and Jack, who are never used enough. Dez is a centering earthmother, Gunther is, or can be a sensible hard working character, Jack, too, is a sensible, thoughtful character, He would make a good sounding board for Luann.
Bets is OK as long as she’s not doing something stupid. Tiffany I remember as the villain during Luann’s high school days so I don’t have a lot of sympathy for.
TJ and Tara were both created to get Brad and Luann in trouble so I have little love for either. You have to go back to the early days of TJ to see what I mean about them.
There are a lot of characters that can be used in these stories but too often stories devolve to Luann and Bernice or Tiffany v Stef,
Stories need a goal, something the main character is working towards, overcoming obstacles in their way. Too often I find these stories to be about obstacles but no clear sense of any goals.
Luann should give Piro Jonah’s address and tell him that Jonah is willing to babysit other people’s kids at any time for any reason…. Don’t bother calling ahead…. The best way is to just show up and drop them on his doorstep, then leave…
Mother in the hospital, Luann taking care of the kids and Pedo only thinks of himself. He’s a swine. BTW, Berniece… he has his sights on you for only one thing… another notch on his bedpost. At least our Be❤️ed Ann❤️Eiffel is up front about it. Pedo is a swine.
Give Luann some credit. Not that easy to take care of kids. Especially someone elses. Tricks and games only last so long, then it’s fighting, screaming, jealous accusations and petty me-ness. For most people, you only really like your own kids and for some, not even that.
Piro is really down bad for Bernice. He really considers her the perfect girl, his savior. Of course she’s happy about this, but at least she’s honest and point out Luann’s merits. I have to admit that I like this ever-deeper love that seems to be slowly growing between Piro and Bernice. It’s sweet.
I find it amazing that Bernice, is always so snarky, with her best ‘friend’, about men/boys, yet, she’s been in just as many weird type follow guys around relationships.
Having looked back a bit on Piro’s storyline I remember how he needed to keep crashing with various people in the dorms because he didn’t have anywhere to stay. Now we are told that he’s been essentially needed to stay (presumably in his mother’s home) taking care of a huge number of children in his family – was this a ret-con?
I don’t know why Bernice is getting any credit for managing this situation. All she has done is successfully dump he kids on Luan when Pedro came to her for help with them.
I hazard a prediction where the Piro, Bernice arc is going. And it’s deep. She wants to help. He needs help. He obviously, to me, is taken with her. She is with him to, but she has to sort out her own feelings. But she wants to help, and Piro needs all the help and love he can get. This will end up. Being a learning experience for both. In Luannberse opposites attrax.
That’s right Bernice, make sure that boy stays depressed. It reminds me of a line from a movie – “you have the funniest way of bumping a guy up – and then bumping him down”.
the best thing about the COVID lockdowns in my humble opinion is that a lot of parents got their first clue as to what teaching a room full of students is like
I’m going to rock the boat but what about this interaction says romance? All I see is a guy that knows he has friends he can count on when he needs help.
At least Bernice is giving credit to Luann, that’s a pleasant change. Meanwhile, Piro doesn’t seem to want to acknowledge Luann’s contribution after dumping the kids on her.
Just wait…. “Gonna be a few hours” will turn into “later tonight” which will turn into Piro not answering his phone, forcing those kids to stay overnight… Possibly longer….
Glad Bernice gave Luann the props. They are a good team. Good to see. This also reminds readers of the importance of good mental health and how to support that.
Romance for Dummies ending: Luann gets pregnant by a guy whose name is chosen from a Wheel of Fortune spin. They elope, and head for places unknown that doesn’t allow any cartoonists. Pull down the curtain that says, “That’s all folks”, and “Good Night Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.”
Piro is a creep for devaluing Luann’s hard work. He is a creep for dropping off kids at the DeGroots’ home – it is not Bernice’s to use as she pleases. Piro goes off the grid and then shows up when he needs help. Creep. Why Bern and Luann seek his attention is baffling: Piro carries too much baggage and they are too young to deal with it. Another ridiculous story arc. I was so hoping Luann was at last going to have a love interest – that arc went nowhere
And the moral of this week’s story, folks, is KIDS ARE NOTHING BUT TROUBLE. Shannon and Piro’s clan and the children Luann nannied are all punishments that people inflict on one another, and anyone who voluntarily associates with them is a doormat or a hypocrite.
Commenters still keep demanding that characters pair up and procreate, however. Misery loves company?
Memo to Piro: Taking care of a busload of your very young sibs isn’t chopped liver, buddy. You’d best be thanking Luann with more enthusiasm when you come to pick them up. You’re a big boy. You don’t need to be “taken care of”. Those children didn’t even know where they were and now are laughing and having fun.

Well, Bernice is scoring some major points with Piro.
So is Bernice hoping to start a romance with him?
I remember the last time when she kissed him.. she felt absolutely nothing. So what changed?

Piro is buttering up Bernice like he’s some kind of con artist, totally ignoring that Luann is doing the hard work of keeping his sibs out of trouble.
