Coming Soon 👀 At the beginning of April, you’ll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
Did Phil ever take the same psych class that Bernice did? This date is looking more like an exercise in social interaction. (Not that those can’t be fun as well.)
“Getting to know you” cards? Do these really exist? If so, the perpetrators should be tracked down and hanged from the lampposts as soon as possible.
Phil is not confident with his ability to make conversation, maybe because of inexperience or maybe his nervousness. It’s not a great sign for compatibility with Luann, who prides herself on her sense of humor and doesn’t have trouble talking to anyone (except for Ox).
I’ve heard of divorce issues that included not screwing the cap back on the toothpaste tube so that it engages properly. However I have not yet heard of a divorce based on the toilet paper issue, althogh it is commonly discussed.
Well, panel 1 shows that free association trait in Luann once again: icebreaker > ice cream. Panel 3 is tempting yet another transition to: “I scream”. Someone pointed out to me that in a household with cats, turning the TP roll to feed from under prevented a playful cat from batting the roll to unroll the paper. Someone here insisted that tearing the paper has better leverage from under, but I disagree. It all depends on the shearing direction of the tear, upward or downward. Personally, I favor over the top, which allows visual inspection of the roll to ensure that the sheets are free and available - and not stuck together or inhibited by interference with the dispenser. Some dispensers eliminate the argument altogether by placing the spindle vertically through the roll.
Talking toilet paper on first date? What’s next, farts? I would go for that. Anyway, we don’t use the toilet paper holder because the rolls are all so big after you cram them in there they won’t roll, so we just sit it on the counter. If we did, over because we don’t want the paper sitting near the not so clean wall before we use it.
Amazon’s got some intelligent automatic terlet paper dispensers. You cant see th roll an if you wave your hand in front of it, it’ll dispense however much you have it set for. No touchin walls, nothing. Even keeps Mr. Whipple from squeezin your Charmin
Don’t look now, but I believe that Mr. Phil just “tripped.”
You kept THAT up pally, and Lu’s going to look over her shoulder and shout “NEXT!” the way she did during Bern’s “experiment” a couple of years ago.
Phil, rule number 1: Let the lady answer FIRST, then acted stunned, agree with HER answer, and say that YOU were about to say the SAME thing. ;-)
What a great idea. Make sure the “getting to know you” cards focus on politics, religion, abortion rights, gender definition, favorite sports teams and pet peeves. Also make sure they come with guns or knives, in case the discussion gets a little hot.
Ok I still like him because he’s obviously a good, caring person and they make such a sweet couple. But pulling out those cards just brings dork to a whole new level.
Oh no! A difference on one of those little things that drive you crazy! But it really seems like a great point to start a discussion. I remember Brad and Toni were able to find a compromise. Phil has good ideas, but needs to learn not to take things for granted, especially with Luann.
It’s not so much his answer that’s an issue as the fact that he just barrels ahead without even asking for her opinion. He also firmly states that “obviously” HIS opinion is the correct one and of course she’ll agree with him.

Under. You get better leverage when you rip it from the roll that way, and you can do it one-handed.
mort b. about 6 hours ago
Oh no…….Here we go. Listen to me. NO ONE CARES!!!
snsurone76 about 6 hours ago
My mother insisted on under. Once, at my brother’s house, she saw that the TP was over, and she reversed it!
tuknoy2003 about 6 hours ago
Red flag right there. They should’ve gotten the banana split; cause that’s what they’ll be in a week

Eat the ice cream first. It will melt. The toilet paper can wait.

OOOO. They’re gonna go to the floor on the Great Toilet Paper Debate! BTW, in my house, it’s above/upside/over/up..

Over – If the holder is mounted too far back and hard to reach.
Northstar Pendragon about 6 hours ago
When they’re on a roll, if she wants over and he wants under, that doesn’t sound like a problem. ➔➔➔ ♀/♂ ♡♥
TonyB. about 6 hours ago
Here we go. First date along with first fight. By the way over is the correct way. :)
beb01 about 6 hours ago
He needs cards to start a conversation? This date story is so f’d up that it’s time to pull the plug on it.

Luann, Phil better be really into you so he can get passed your “under” preference for TP roll.
mort b. about 6 hours ago
The suspense is killing me. What will the next card read? Cat or Dog? Or Fish?
kenhense about 6 hours ago
OMG – The first time in bed he’ll have something 100 pages.

Phil is about to find out why Luann is currently single and will be so for the foreseeable future.

Ice has long been broken since they agreed to be honest. Who needs this goof ball stuff…
joeallendoty57 Premium Member about 5 hours ago
According to the patent for toilet paper, the paper is supposed to go over and not under.
Wilkins068 about 5 hours ago
Coupla good reasons to have th TP go down the back:
1. Harder for cats to unroll it
2. Best reason: If you got a relly small bathroom the paper goin down the back huggin the wall creates the illusion of havin more space
Ruth Brown about 5 hours ago
This poor generation that cannot make conversation. It is wrong to presume you know the answer to icebreaker questions.

I ONLY care that it is there and available.

Perfect icebrecker; Luann is just the person to crack the ice up. Ooh, see what I did there? So sweet.

If you have a cat that likes to paw at the toilet paper roll, then it better be under.
xaingo about 4 hours ago
Over, under, I don’t care. Just don’t leave 2 squares with no spare roll.
Denver Reader Premium Member about 4 hours ago
Who brings that to a first date?
uhohlol about 3 hours ago
Here we have the same issue with the paper towel holder rather than toilet paper.

I used to be an “over” but under keeps the cat from unrolling the whole roll.
