@ANYFACE: Adding a room isn’t usually a planning issue. It’s a building code issue; and where water and electric are involved, it’s a plumbing code and fire code issue. A room intended for human habitation (even if only for sleeping) needs a firewall…
i can’t decide if Evans is going for TJ miracle construction guy, or TJ the complete idiot who will destroy the house. There doesn’t seem to be anyone in the comic strip playing the part of “person with common sense.”
Last time TJ did a remodeling project, didn’t Shannon also get a hammer to keep her occupied?
Anyway, what about the elephant in the room? The fact that if Shannon’s got a room of her own with Toni and “Bwad”, it’s going to be that much easier for her to move in full time….
And still, nobody has considered getting permission from the owner of the house, despite the fact that he already warned them against doing any more unauthorized renovations. I’m just hoping this particular fact hasn’t simply been forgotten by the writers.
Greg and Karen have crossed wires again. Right after a Sunday strip in which Brad and Toni say they’re going to buy a house, here they are renovating the one they rent from Brad’s parents? Why bother?(I hope the Evans read these comments, because they need to realize they are making a mess of the strip continuity these days …)
Without having seen the entire layout of things, it might not be that big of a project, even in real life. Of course, you need to plan things out in advance and then buy the material you need and rent any of the “right tools” you will need but don’t have. If you know what you are doing, a project like that might be less than a week – depending on what has to be done and the current layout. Of course, in the comic strip, TJ has been shown to have many talents. Just because things don’t always go smoothly allows “poetic license” to add humor to the strip – in real life, its not always so humorous (until years later when you can look back and laugh about it).
These have to be among the dumbest people I have ever come across (though I love LuAnn and most of the characters): TJ for his wise-a$$ “ideas”, Toni for instantly agreeing with him, and Brad for quickly falling in line… the only one who’s acting her age is Shannon!
Now wait a minute! I thought Brad and Toni were about to start hunting for a house. Why bother building a new room in a house they’re going to be moving out of?
I’m thinking that the washing machine has to be hooked up to water — both incoming and outgoing. So there is plumbing along the one wall. And then there is the dryer. electric or gas? Presumably the former, and therefore a nice 220V connection. If gas, then there is a gas line.
These then have to be redone out in the garage. And you’re going to let the guy whose eatery on wheels burned up do the work? Firefighters should know a lot better than that.
Not where my wife and I live. We even had to get a permit for our outside deck. A guy down the street built his without the permit and the township made him tear it down. Codes exist for a reason and that is safety of the home owner.
“It shouldn’t take that long.” Famous last words. Toni, you should know that rarely does anything go exactly as planned. For example, I doubt if you planned on being Shannon’s substitute mother.
I’ve been reading LUANN for years. Don’t you remember that time when T.J. knocked down wall or at least part of a wall to make a walk-thru from one room to another? He did a good job on that.
“Coupla weeks”? I think he underestimates the difficulty involved in moving a W/D. I have a multi-function space I’ve been working on (admittedly, off and on,) for ten years.
Bottom line: If TJ doesn’t destroy the house, Shannon won’t want to stay in the new room alone and Brad will end up sleeping there. OR, TJ does destroy the house and everybody moves in with Jonah.
All of you building code Nazis, all they have to do to comply (in most places) is to not claim it’s a bedroom. If they call it a storage area or bonus room or home office, then it doesn’t require a closet or window, or, in many places, a building permit.
Things are definitely looking up in the comedy department! This potential fiasco could go on for a few weeks worth of comics and have plenty of hilarity! For me this is turning out to be one of the most entertaining Brad/Toni arcs in quite a while. This should be, IMO, much more interesting than the “Oh wow, Brad and Toni are going to a) think about copulating, b) be kept from copulating, or c) begin to copulate.” arcs we have had a fair number of recently.
One thing that I thought of yesterday is…. there was another remodeling arc that occurred perhaps a year ago that I recall had Shannon involved. At that time a lot of folks WERE predicting the remodel WOULD involve the adding of a bedroom for Shannon. Now…. we are seeing it come to fruition. I wonder if this was simply the plan by Greg all along… or I wonder if perhaps he read the comments here and saw how a lot of folks were anticipating the adding of a bedroom….. and he agreed it was a good idea…. and then worked on the story arc to make it so?
All I can say is that the artist needs to figure out how to do something with Toni’s arms. She’s always got that weird ‘standing at attention’ look to her.
Lets see these guys, both of them are firemen (or firepersons) but neither of them sm to realize that a bedroom needs a window, or door leading outside, WHY? BECAUSE IF THE DAMN HOUSE CATCHES FIRE, THERE NEEDS TO BE AN IMMEDIATE ESCAPE ROUTE !!! Toni, Brad. I’m glad your only cartoons.
TJ, also known as BD, bulldozer has a solution for everything and his quick thinking is like a vacuum, doesn’t even leave the dist time to settle. He seems to have pretty good ideas because Brad and Toni go for them. In this case, they won’t have to wait too long before they can get Shannon out of their bedroom, and who wouldn’t want that!
Fearless prediction: If/when the new room is actually finished and usable, Brad will end up sleeping there when Shannon’s visiting – in a child-sized bed that’s too small for him.
It always takes time to figure out the focus of a new arc if there is any. OK, suppose TJ finishes the work in one day as he predicts and the washing machine magically works in another location. Shannon moves in to the new room and then Jonah returns, and she says ‘look daddy I have my own room now. Can I stay here?’ Then the whole issue of Jonah and his constant absence comes up.
@AIRMAN: You suggested that maybe they would all end up moving in with Jonah. That could actually solve the problem of Jonah always dumping Shannon on them; they’d already be there and know his plans! But I had a question about whether Jonah actually ‘lives’ anywhere. We mostly see him dropping Shannon off; this time, they were in a car. So I’m wondering if Jonah and Shannon might actually be living in his car????
There are so many criticisms about perceived inconsistencies, factual errors, and prematurely curtailed or, the opposite, drawn out plots, that it is a bit of a downer to read through every comment, which I like to do. Yet I persist, as someone did. It can’t be fun to put so much energy into negativity, but like Ygritte (spell?) said of Jon Snow, I know nothing.
In the silly putty world of comics everything is possible. It is an existing room with electricity so making it a bedroom may not be an issue. Moving the laundry and doing the plumbing would be. Really what I’m waiting for is Brad to grow a pair. She’s ok with it because of her insecurities about money probably. But enough already. If I had a perpetual house guest regardless of the reason I would tire of his presence after a while. Time to grow up folks.
Sailors would know better than me, but let TJ get one of those bunk beds (racks) from an old Navy ship, that is suspended by chains and folds up against the wall (or bulkhead).

And of Course Brad’s brief flash of common sense yesterday, soon predictably disappears as he falls for Old Smiley’s “plan.”
No Building Permits.
No Permission for the Owners.
No Nothing.
And its funny that Smiley is all in for doing this “renovation” just when Brad and Toni have a wad of cash to purchase a new home.
No One has yet said who’s paying for this “renovation” work. B & T’s down payment money may soon end up in Old Smiley’s pocket……,

-Look, I’ve gotta level with you-
It’s a plane kind of thing to see
We keep putting up walls
And building ourselves a mystery
-I can’t pin it, exactly, but I feel it’s a concrete hypothesis
You say my words were a mixture and a mess-
You say my words came out gravelly and spent…
But, you know exactly just what I cement!
-You’ve got no room to talk…
But, now you do!
So just say thanks,
Cos that room is open to view
-You say it’s screwed up, but here’s the drill-
Cleanup on tile number nine, till you’ve had your fill!
Just caulk it up to a rough draft, but the Windows still operate!
No need to say any more….just remember dinner is at 8….
