This strip is from thirty years ago. Cell phones existed, but I’m guessing that Rosalyn went over to a neighbor’s house, called the restaurant where Calvin’s parents told her they would be, and got them home early. Too bad, they’d probably planned on going somewhere else after that.
I like those dancing TVs in Calvin Land, by the way.
I’m sure Calvin expected the misadventure to end like this. He had fun while it lasted, paid Rosalyn back in full and then some. That’s what the plan was all about!
I noted on Saturday that Calvin was thinking further ahead of himself than usual and even thinking ahead of Hobbes. That was when Hobbes reported that Rosalyn was trying to open a window and Calvin replied that he had locked them all. If Calvin had continued to think ahead, he would have been in bed pretending to be asleep when Mom and Dad returned to let Calvin in. That plan might not of worked, of course, but if it had he would only have to face his angry parents tomorrow rather than his parents and Rosalyn tonight.
Incidentally, Hobbes reporting to Calvin that Rosalyn was trying to open a window was another of those small pieces of evidence that Hobbes knows things Calvin doesn’t know. I don’t think anyone commented on that at the time.
I love the difference a slight change in the mouth squiggle makes in the expressions of the three tall people. Rosalyn and Mom are just outraged and mad at Calvin. Dad, on the other hand, seems to be partly mad at Calvin, partly sympathetic because he knows what’s coming for Calvin, and partly just hoping Mom doesn’t blame him later by way of collateral damage!
This is consonant with children’s cerebral development although at the extreme. Very much like the Dear Leader who never developed impulse control or foresight.
In a sense, Calvin did the same thing as his parents: He spent some enjoyable time alone with the one he loves most, only to face a bad ending that he should have seen coming.
