Is it just me or do the drawings look… different?

My boys have heard of leaving food in the bowl, but have never seen this strange practice occur.

Time for a Nile story! Maybe about food being stored for the future and forgotten, like squirrels are rumored to do?

I can see Elvis in a fancy restaurant telling the head waiter or sommelier in a very snooty voice to take it back, it is just not up to his exceedingly high standards.

The gang has something they can all agreed on – food insecurity.

That’s my Samantha. She hasn’t been fed for a month and is starving before she even finishes her bowl of food.

I finally figured out that Foxy wants her food right at the edge of the dish, and this is not some esoteric cat thing. If she has to lean over the plate she gets it on her giant fluffy front fur and it’s hard for her to clean. I do a lot of brushing her there when she lets me, and a lot more food is going into her.

Heard that from our guys!

If you try to pour fresh kibble on top of hours old kibble, the cat will eat the fresh kibble and leave the rest behind. Once the leftovers have been rejected, there’s no salvaging the situation!

One immutable feline rule is that no matter what the container size or shape, if any part of the bottom can be seen it is, by definition, empty.

I love Puck’s honesty.

Actually, there is a sound reason why cats stop eating eating with food left. A cats whiskers are very sensitive. If a dish has sides that ate too high, it hard to get to the food that is not in the middle. A bowl that is flatter, more like a plate, allows them to get to all of the food without discomfort. Likewise, a large water bowl where they have a large middle so they can avoid the sides insure that your cats will be well hydrated.

I always push the food left in the dish to the center. The cats watch me and I’m sure they think I’m putting more in their dishes because they come back and finish eating.

SO true to life! I’ve seen this very scenario played out often enough among all the cats I grew up with. Once you can see the bottom of the bowl, it’s over. Completely inedible. hehehe I adore Pucky’s guilty little whisper that he’s not supposed to be sitting on the counter. ;D The Woman is too distracted to notice. Mwahahaha!

My cat once left food in her bowl. I came into the kitchen and found an industrious squirrel gobbling the leftovers. It dashed out the window when it saw me – and then hung out on the sill like I wouldn’t notice it waiting for me to leave! Bold animal!

Even though I still feel 16, suddenly I am 24.

Once again, I am laughing, because this is so accurate. XD

I love the expression on Elvis in panel 4 and Puck is not that pleased either! Sometimes the family dog may alleviate the excess/old cat food problem but then again some dogs can be as finicky as the felines. Also, the nutrition value might not be all that good for our canine friends either though I have had dogs before that would steal the cat food if the possibility presented itself.

People will happily cut the crusts off sandwiches for fussy folks, but don’t understand that cat food has edges too!♥

Ours always have kibble available, but Goddess help us if there’s only a tablespoon in either of the bowls! And Sultan is never more affectionate than when I have a packet of their wet food in my hand.. LOL!

Thomios: Alright, everyone, I’ve made my famous leftover pie for dessert.

Elvis-Anum: Leftovers? Where did these leftovers come from?

Thomios: Some of it is treats from last week’s Feast of Candy. I also added kibble that magically appeared in the pantry.

Elvis-Anum: But leftovers?

Beatrixia: Come on, Elvis. It’s delicious!

Elvis-Anum: Alright. But I’m not convinced.

Sometime Later That Night

Thomios: Did you hear something in the kitchen?

Puckmosis: It could be Lupinium.

Lupinium: Hey, no fair! I’m right here!

Puckmosis: Elvis! What are you doing eating that leftover pie?

Elvis-Anum: I just wanted to make sure none of it went to waste.

With four cats I rarely have a problem with food left on their plates. They have a bowl of kibble which is filled every morning, and for breakfast I divide a can of food on four plates on the kitchen floor. If one cat tries to bury it and walks off to the kibble bowl, it somehow disappears by the time I gather the plates up. Also, good news! All four cats are finally drinking from the kitty fountain. The last holdout was Samantha, who was the one I mainly bought the fountain for!

*I’m not supposed to be up here… I LOVE IT!! Loaner Cat has a 24 hour dry food bowl that is shallow and wide. I fill with a half cup of her specialty health food and she’ll finish it within that time. But she’d stopped eating well when she started having urinary health problems so now she gets a little wet food at night. Same kind of food, just wet. That’s gone in about three minutes. It’s really helped overall. You’d never know she’s almost 17.

Come on Woman, even Pucky is frowning and Puck almost never frowns.

When my cat first came to me she ate everything in sight, I was so pleased, as my previous cats have always been faddy, now my precious baby never finishes the food, I can only get her to eat the ‘soup’ & she licks all the juice off the bits!!!

I give the bowl a little shake so the contents all evenly settle across the bottom and my kitties are happy again!

Apropos, Update is up to about one and a half cans of kitten food per day. Yesterday she hadn’t quite finished when we had to leave so the other cats got to finish it off for her. All of ours like their water in red plastic Solo cups. Seems it tastes better that way.

OT – Istanbul celebrity dog

I have a poster that has a half-glass of water on it, with a diagram that has a data label on the bottom half, “50% Water”, and another data label on the top half, “50% Air.” The text on the bottom says, “Technically, the glass is always full!”

That philosophy doesn’t work on cats, though.

Ah, the drama! the pathos! No bowl is emptier than a cat bowl with an exposed bottom. People are just cruel to the poor fluffy children!

Double Toe beans!! Including rare sighting of rear toe beans! This is a very real phenomenon. The food that is pushed out of the center is inferior and quickly becomes unacceptable. Once again, our beloved author captures the subtle realities of life with beloved cats.

Most of my cats have not been finicky eaters. However, I had one cat who was firmly of the opinion that canned food was only fresh for the five minutes after the can lid popped open. After that, it was only fit for other cats.

My cat eats only dry food. If the middle is empty, I just shake the food around until it bottom is covered.

All very true-to-cat.

Not even a good house kitty can stop the bowl drama of a half-empty bowl. But a indoor/outdoor kitty who hunts just gives us a nasty look, goes out, and catches some mice.

I forgot to mention that today is a very important food day for cats and dogs. Daylight savings ending or beginning means that dogs and cats deserve TWO meals. One, old time; one, new time. They stop demanding it when they figure out you are only giving them half a serving at each meal.

Elvis is starving and gets the vapors.

Used to have an outside feeder for the feral cats and we had one very wild cat that joined us sometimes to eat, he didn’t bother our cats, he didn’t scent mark and he looked very healthy. It was a dry feeder that sometimes needed a little help from a paw to rake the food out. My cats learned to do this but Penguin would eat a whole in the middle of the food then leave.

OT: Has anyone heard how Michael G is doing? the last bit of new was from a couple weeks ago, when he’d been hospitalized and was too ill to post … ??

My two get a small can of wet food in the morning. If Pookie Poo stays up instead of going for her nap, I go check the bowl. Both go running into the laundry room to see if more food will be put out. If the bowl’s been licked clean, they get another can (3 oz is the only size they’ll eat). Most of the time, at least 1/4 – 1/3 of the can is still in the bowl, so I tell them, there’s still food there. Sometimes they take it as a challenge to finish it, but most times, I get “the look” as if they’re saying, “Can’t you see we need more food?” Unfortunately, they leave at least 1/2 of the second can uneaten, and those little cans are expensive!

OT – Update on TinyKittens and Georgia

Take a fork and stir it up, suddenly it’ll be brand new.

Works for Smokey. She’s gotten to the point where she’s not only decided it’s okay to have canned food at night, she’s gotta have those little single serve Sheba Pefercty Portions during the day, too. If she doesn’t finish a portion off and the boys don’t finish it off for her, she’ll tell you her bowl is empty. But suddenly if we stir it up we’ve put more food in her bowl.

Accurate.

So like my cat-kids!

Just got a reminder from Smokey. Daylight Savings Time is evil. We feed the cats and dogs on a schedule, three meals a day for the cats, two for the dogs (although there is lots of snacking between meals, especially for Smokey and the dogs). The second feeding is supposed to be at or just after 5PM, except today 5PM falls at what was 6PM. Smokey was getting crabby as she wasn’t getting her evening meal when she had been since her internal clock obviously hasn’t readjusted yet. When I finally fed her I let her know it was DST and she gave a look like “Daylight Savings Time sucks!”

Natasha and Ash did the same thing. I shook it and low and behold, there was food again!

At work, we stopped selling pizza at lunch because our rules insisted that we prep a fresh pizza every twenty minutes, and we were throwing away probably 3/4 of the pizza we made.

I absolutely L*O*V*E all the names you all have for your cats. Very imaginative.

I can definitely relate to this.
