Split pea soup? Is that a New England thing? In my neck of the woods, you make soup beans and cornbread to finish up the ham. No, that’s not a typo. Not bean soup—soup beans. And salty cornbread, not sweet!
My cousin sent me home with ham, scalloped potatoes, corn pudding, sweet potatoes and cheesecake brownies! My Christmas present was a BOOK! It was a good Christmas.
Quiet is the forest and the neighborhood all, life out there is frozen. Only from the distant waterfallis heard very softly the noise .The gnome listens and, half in a dream, seems to hear the current of time, wonders where it is going, wonders where the source may be.
The cold of the midwinter night is severe, the stars sparkle and twinkle. All sleep in solitary yard soundly until morning. The moon sinks in its silent path, the snow shines white on pine and spruce, the snow shines white on the roofs. Only the gnome is awake.
I actually haven’t had “Christmas Dinner” yet. Saturday was so nice that I took a plate of cheese, fruit and snacky-things outside for brunch. Read my new book and listened to ‘A Jazz Christmas’ on Siruis.
Just didn’t feel like bothering to put together dinner after that, so I’ll have it today.
Tomte is a regular noun in the non-neuter group. It goes as follows:
a gnome – en tomte
the gnome – tomten
gnomes – tomtar
the gnomes – tomtarna
a grumpy gnome – en tjurig tomte
the grumpy gnome – den tjuriga tomten
grumpy gnomes – tjuriga tomtar
the grumpy gnomes – de tjuriga tomtarna
And this is a fine example of how deceptive appearances can be. You think the Swedes are sensible, normal, decent people. And then it turns they do that sort of thing – and more – all the time.
Now I see the advantage of making a ham for Christmas – ham days! We shortsightedly made duck breasts and they are all gone, so sadly we will have to cook again tomorrow.
It’s a prime rib here on Christmas eve and by New Year’s eve, we’re having prime rib soup which is the bomb! Then the weekend after New Year’s, it’s ham, ham, ham and Green Bean Soup which is to die for, from the ham bone and all the bits left on it (which are usually more than bits because I like my soup hammy) :) I love this eating time of year.
We visit relatives for the meals on the holidays (we’re the old folks) so no leftovers for us. Today I put away the Christmas decorations (indoor). I don’t do outdoors, that’s for the groundskeeper aka husband….
I hope everyone had a great Christmas yesterday. My daughter made a small turkey, so no leftovers for Nana Kitty-Kat. Great-grandchildren got spoiled rotten, which is the point of the exercise. Now I just have to figure out what to haul out of the freezer for my dinner tonight: do I have the ambition to make a roast, or will it be something smaller.
Dream sweet dreams of ham, Elvis, Lupin, Goldie and Puck!
Thank you to those of you who sent your support for me nd for Mippy. We did find an emergency vet who was open on Christmas Day. However, by the time we got him there, his condition was critical. He’d gone from seemingly okay to very critical diabetic ketoacidosis and fluid in his lungs from heart failure in less than 24 hours. They couldn’t treat one condition without making the other one worse. So we had to say goodbye. I stayed with him and petted him and talked to him until the end. Sleep peacefully, my good boy.
My husband, a Minnesotan with German roots, always wants to make split pea soup with the leftover ham bone and chunks. I’d say the split pea soup tradition is more widespread than New England, and goes along the upper Midwest.
Say, you folks who like to talk about food should come over to https://forums.egullet.org/! It’s the website of the nonprofit Society for Culinary Arts and Letters. As with GoComics, you can read without being a member but you have to join and sign in to comment. As with GoComics, there is a member agreement but membership is free. (There are also a lot of BCN lovers there, but we keep the discussions focused on food and drink, not pets, not politics, not religion…)
My daughter broke tradition and we had chicken and beef tacos. Her next few meals will be enchiladas and nachos. For me today, after searching for years I finally found split top hot dog buns. I love toasting the sides. Tomorrow I will be making a salad. I made taco dip for yesterday and I have lettuce, tomatoes and Black olives to use up
The herd received several new catnip toys for Christmas. A new type. Standard cloth bags in cute shapes and design, but instead of fluff with a little packet inside, these babies were 100% nip filled.
It was a loud night, with all sorts of rustling and scampering. Much more than a normal night with 11 monsters roaming the house. In the morning the normal contingent on the quilt was lethargic and sleepy. Well, sleepier. With nip in their fur.
Downstairs, the corpse of the banana lay in the middle of the great room floor. The tag ripped out and a great wound 1/2 the body length. The seam was shredded and the formerly plump banana was an empty peel, flat as a pancake, soggy. Yet not a speck of catnip to be found.
We think the perp was Elvis, but all of the crew took part in the aftermath. It was a nippy, nippy Christmas.
My wife just brought me a couple of slices of leftover ham…I broke some onto small pieces and Yasina ate some , only she preferred it held for her, no eating it off the plate for her. Her brother Yarrow just came in and finished what ‘Sina didn’t want…I am sure there will be begging later…
Oh dear, now I have to find a way to work black-eyed peas into New Year’s dinner. I do not like them, they taste like soil to me, but they’re supposed to bring luck and I can’t afford to pass up any possibilities.
It was just my mom, my brother and me for Christmas. My brother made lasagna and cranberry salad and I made a lemon pie. We had the lasagna and cranberry salad both meals yesterday and for Sunday dinner today. There was only enough pie for one meal yesterday and today. There was some leftovers of everything still. I assume my brother and mom will finish it off in the next day or two.
I’m planning to make a quickie lasagna. Jar of Italian sauce, not homemade as I usually do. It’s just me, so it will go a long way. I’ve been so blessed with wonderful neighbors. They have gifted me with homemade tamales and various other dishes. Plus, boxes of candy, Sees and Godiva. I will be 80 in a couple if months, with severe back pain and neuropathy, so standing over a stove is a little difficult for me. All the talk of split pea soup is making think I should try to make it. I received a couple of package of split peas, green and yellow, from the food bank. I will attempt to take advantage of them and take my time making the soup with lot of breaks in between stirring.
Way down here at the bottom where no one will notice I can be brave enough to say I do NOT like ham. There isn’t a ham recipe in the world that can’t be improved by substituting a fresh pork butt or shoulder for the ham. Including the delicious split pea soup, although that at least might dilute the saltiness of the ham enough to help me get rid of the one ham left in my freezer.
