I’m normally the first one up in the morning, get the kettle started, then deal with the two cats attached to my ankles. The rest of the coffee process takes place after that.
Very nice, TJ. (I wish I knew how long it takes for my electric kettle to boil water and turns itself off; it takes so doggone long when I want it hot enough and still so doggone long for my herbal tea to steep.)
Instant is not coffee. All coffee makers take time and have a few steps. Big deal. The only thing you don’t need to do is grind it every day. I find so little difference between fresh ground and store ground as to be pointless.
After three cups of instant, I find myself wondering how he can taste the fresh-ground. (And in any event, the proper way to make coffee requires an espresso machine, or a moka pot in a pinch.)
TJ (and probably Greg) is ill-informed. Instant coffee is almost totally devoid of caffeine and will more likely put you to sleep. The more you roast and process coffee, the more it loses caffeine. Instant is so over baked, it’s mostly just colour and flavour.
Just like the principal of homeopathic theory, a minute amount of a drug has an opposite effect, ergo, lots will keep you awake, little will put you to sleep.
I have it every night for that very reason. Having one right now….
No one serious about coffee makes instant before making the good stuff. (I do a fine grind and make a triple-shot cappuccino to enjoy with a bit of dark chocolate to start my day while I read the comics. Instant? No way. (Except whipped into foam with equal parts sugar and hot water and then put in iced milk)
For a moment this morning, I originally thought this was a Luann Againn strip that slipped through. Then I realized I hadn’t had my morning cup yet. 8^ )
I love the smell of coffee but prefer espresso. Helps that I used to manage a Starbucks back in the day, and sampling the espresso machine daily was part of the job..prob where I acquired the taste for it.
“Thanks to its high levels of antioxidants and beneficial nutrients, it also seems to be quite healthy. Studies show that coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of several serious diseases.”

Since last January I’ve been reading Luann (and Luann Againn for more background). Some of my favorite posters often mention the strip, posters who also follow many of the same comics I do, so I thought I’d give it a try. Luann does not appeal to me, and I am looking for a couple of replacement strips for my regular Go Comics rotation. I’ll probably be chastised by some for wasting this space and their time with this, my first and likely last post on Luann. Guess I just wanted to say goodbye—and wish a happy and healthy New Year to all Luann followers.
NNOOOO! That is NOT how to make coffee! 1. Never use that blade grinder you prss down. The grind is too inconsistent. 2. Use a Burr grinder. 3. Measure the water for a French Press. 4. Remember a coffee cup is 6 oz not 8 so 3 measuring cups of water = 4 coffee cups Not 3. Adjust number of scoops of ground coffee for 4 cups or it will be too weak.
It would be nice to see TJ in a story, maybe he meets a lady chef, or starts a charity meals service. The perfect match would be him and Tiffany but that’s not going to happen. Anything that doesn’t involve fire or explosions would be great.
I liked black coffee the first time I tasted it. My preference is a triple shot of espresso. Sometimes there is no time for covfefe, that does not bother me.But yes, a campfire & frying bacon would really add to the experience.
I don’t understand people who can’t function in the morning. I learned long ago, to just get up and face the day when the alarm goes off. Snooze alarms are a crutch.
I got hooked on the French press coffee making several years ago and it’s the only way to go. You can make adjustments in several areas to make it to your liking, not just the amount of beans but how long to grind them, water temp, amount of water, steeping time, etc. And of course the amazing varieties of coffee beans out there.
In one of his comic routines, the late John Pinette was talking about how he had to go to Dunkin’ Donuts to get coffee, so he could stand in the long line at Starbucks to get coffee.
I love coffee. Drink mine just plain, thank you. No cream or sugar. I’ve had it from a French Press and that was ok but I did not notice any real difference.
People here commenting that you don’t use HOT water to make coffee baffle me.
And screw it all. Milk and sweetener are a must. Not too sweet, not too much milk, but I drink it extremely rarely black. Unless we are out of milk. I actually prefer cream.
I get by [as a single guy living alone] on instant coffee (well, Nescafe) just fine. TJ is a pretentious snot, along with all his other “charms.” May he disappear forever!
And, just to humblebrag, I happen to be in Colombia this very day. Even though the beans are already roasted, they smell amazing. Can’t wait to get ’em home and enjoy.
I soo relate to this. Tried to make coffee on the weekend. Poured the water, noticed an error light on the machine. Unplugged, restarted and cleaned machine before I realized water was still in the cup and was never poured in machine/I need coffee to wake up/I need to wake up to make coffee.

How to be awake in the morning, don’t drink coffee. Coffee messes with your body’s systems and causes you to ultimately be more tired.
