So while the People drowse around in ham comas, the cats have to eat healthy? The injustice! Recruit the Robber Mice! Break into the fridge! Take that ham for yourselves, cats! (And the mice can have anything else they find in that fridge as their cut of the loot.)

Woman, you should know that cats are obligate carnivores. Read the label. Carnivore ≠ pumpkin or cantaloupe!

Yeah, we still make jokes about the time we adopted our dog and the rescue group had him on (I kid you not) trout and potato dog food. Surprise, surprise, he didn’t want to eat much until we bought him some normal kibble. I hear you, Goldie!

Mine actually seem to like the new kibble I had to buy. One is ""made with salmon, brown rice, sweet potatoes, barley, peas, carrots, cranberries, and blueberries "" and the other ""contains chicken, brown rice, dried egg, dried kelp, dried beet pulp, cranberries, and blueberries"" :o

I say had, because dry cat food is now among the endangered species at my local grocery, and this brand was all that was left, at what I consider to be a reasonable price. Even Walfart was down to 4 or 5 rather dubious-looking damaged bags. :-(

You don’t do that to an obligate carnivore. We sometimes gradually switch to another meat-based food.

One of my kittens had to eat prescription food for a year or so until he outgrew some food sensitivities. I’d had to try to give that same food to other, older kitties, who flatly refused it. Thank cat that growing kittens are always hungry enough to eat anything put before them!

Wow, getting into the cat/pet-food conundrum is dangerous with so many questions to consider. Where is the pet food made? Is it healthy for my cat/dog? Can I afford the good stuff? What is the good stuff? Is the expensive food better food? There are what seem like a million questions.

When we found out Giblet was diabetic, we had to buy prescription kibble for him, and it was VERY expensive, I can tell you. Still, we would do it again for our little furry family members. I hope the food I am buying our cats now is healthy for them. Certainly, it is from a major manufacturer, but is that a quality guarantee? I don’t know.

By the way, speaking of cat food…Hamilton likes the Linguine di Tuttomare I made (with his guidance).

Loaner Cat has to be on a urinary tract diet because at almost 17 now, she’s forming crystals so I feed her the kibble and fill in with the equivalent wet every night. Just half a 3.5oz can. But it has to be salmon. Anything else, in both dry and wet form and it will sit for days in her bowl while she gives me the “I’m dying of starvation over here” face.

No no no. The pack each got a half cup of ham this morning with their wet food and later today a bit of smoked salmon. Meanwhile we are having multi-speed omelettes with peppers, mushrooms, onions and sausage and hash browns. And maybe some savoury scones.

Silly Woman, don’t you know that the holidays are NOT the time to “eat healthier”? There’s plenty of time for that in the new year, if you absolutely must…

Then there’s the issue of carbs. Cats don’t need to eat carbs, & too many carbs in their diet can trigger and/or worsen diabetes. (Onyx’s diabetes is under control on a low-carb diet of Fancy Feast Classic Paté Chicken Feast, & her favorite treat is the freeze-dried chicken she gets for lunch.) All those extra “tastes cats love” aren’t there for the cats’ benefit; they’re there to attract silly h00minz who can’t wrap their heads around the “obligate carnivore” thing!

My not-exactly-fussy cat would probably eat a brick if I got it out of a can and put it in a bowl on the floor, which is good because I’m switching her over to a “senior” dry cat food and I would imagine the taste is probably similar.

    .

On a side topic regarding older cats, I hear a lot of questions on what to do when a pet stops wanting to eat wet food. One thing you can try: Heating it up a bit in the microwave- not to the point of being blazing hot; just so that a little steam starts rising out. Cats and dogs both value smell much more over taste when it comes to food, and as they age, the sense of smell starts to fade. Warming the food makes the smell more intense.

My kitty, Hazel, (avatar) will wrestle me for walnuts. She won’t take most food from my hand unless it it’s a piece of walnut. Everything else must be sniffed, accepted, then placed on the floor for her consumption. (We’ve taught her to sit when we have a treat or wet food!)

I did a search for cat food with cantaloupe in it. The top hit was a dry food with pumpkin, duck and cantaloupe. I am guessing the food the woman bought has some meat in it too, but they aren’t outraged by that part.

4 cats = will eat anything. Competition from each other and a small dog who is willing to check out their food to ensure it’s ok. They do the same for him. “Just checking, we’re not EATING it”

I knew vegetarians who told me their cat was a vegetarian. I know a cat who eats out when I see one. Mouse satisfies 100% of the dietary requirements for cats. They evolved that way together. Trace elements from fresh grass tips are also helpful.

Where did so many readers get the idea that because there is some vegetable material in the new cat food, that’s all there is? If Puck had looked at the label on the old cat food, he would have found all sorts of yummy (?) ingredients like wheat gluten and modified corn starch.

We had one cat who loved cantaloupe and mango, and another who found bran cereal irresistible. But as long as they ate enough meat to get their MFDRs of taurine, they were fine.

It might also be worth mentioning that pumpkin is highly recommended by many vets for cats with kidney problems.
