Until cereal companies started pushing it, most folks who didn’t do hard physical labor had nothing for breakfast. Or a glass of (likely enough) near beer* or the like. And maybe hunk of bread or some cheese. Or not.
* Up until pretty recently, plain water was likely to make you sick. A bit of alcohol (or boiling it to make tea or coffee) makes it safer.
Sorry, gotta go with Rat on this one. Lots of restaurants serve “breakfast” food all day, but I really treasure the ones that serve “regular” food at breakfast time. For instance, my local Burger King will cheerfully sell me a Whopper and fries at seven in the morning. This is also one of the few redeeming qualities of White Castle: they’ll serve you anything on the menu, any time of day.
I am 100% with rat there. Breakfast type foods (eggs, etc) are fine when I am actually in the mood for that, but otherwise I’d rather have a burger. Also, I work nightshift and have been up for 12 hours at normal-people breakfast time.
Yeah, WHO SAYS that you can only eat certain things for Breakfast? If I want a Cheeseburger at 8 A.M. and a bowl of Oatmeal at 9 P.M. WHO SAYS that it’s wrong???
I remember the first time I saw someone having a soda for breakfast, how odd it was. You have OJ or milk, I thought. That was the day my life changed. And my weight! (not really since I was in the Marines and almost everone was a mean, grean, fightin’ machine; the weight thing happened when I turned 45, got divorced, and yes, the soda really flowed).
The first time I went to Europe (Germany), I ran into this dilemma. The bed and breakfast we stayed at served all kinds of meats and lunchtime things for breakfast and no cereal or eggs or pancakes. Talk about culture shock! :)
I always sigh with melancholy when circumstances require I get a fast-food-franchise breakfast. I’d so very much rather have their burger and fries claim to fame, but “the lunch grill is not open until 11:00”.
When I lived with a friend in the South, I found her eating a bologna sandwich for breakfast. I was shocked. She also ate a tomato by itself like an apple!
The comments have me thinking that a lot of people here today do not know (or remember) that Pig-being-a-bacon-eater was an established thing from the beginning of Pearls before Swine (Currently, 2 strips are in the first 7 days on GoComics, Saturday and Sunday. I highly recommend reviewing them).
What I noticed about this strip is it’s 8am. This means that Rat had to have time to prepare the burger and fries. He also had to have time for the first thing in the morning tasks. Based on this he probably woke up at about 7am. Who gets up at that ungodly early hour? That makes this strip unbelievable.
1) Handshaking. Not a COVID thing, I just don’t like touching other people or being touched by them. (and if you put your hand on my shoulder and you are not my wife or selected family members, well, just don’t)2) Ties. I’m not real big on tying something snugly around my neck as a way of saying “look at me, I’m a professional.” Jackets, fine. Ties, no.3) Saying bless you after a sneeze, and then being required to thank the person for said blessing. A sneeze is an acute allergic reaction; there’s nothing remotely religious about it. So knock it off. You don’t bless someone when s/he coughs, burps or passes gas do you? Well, maybe some of you weirdos do.
You could work in broadcast media. The morning shift people eat their lunches at 8am. Countless times I’ve walked in at 9am to smell Thai food being microwaved.
Who said we agreed to such things? Pig, do you know the full saying about the definition of Yankee? Wish I could remember which Library book I read it in years ago, but the full saying has some bearing on today’s strip.
To people in other countries, a Yankee is someone from the United States. To people in the United States a Yankee is someone who lives in the North. To people in the North a Yankee is someone who lives in New England. To people in New England a Yankee is someone who lives in Vermont. And to people in Vermont a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.
So that’s saying some have nothing wrong eating pie for breakfast, though I’d say it’s far more than folks in Vermont. And folks eat steak, cake, fried chicken, hot dogs, pork chops, etc. for breakfast.
When I was a teenager I had a paper route. On Sunday morning, I delivered the paper at 5am. Afterwards other paper boys and I went to a local restaurant for breakfast. We ate cheeseburgers and fries.
I used to deliver to a major restaurant chain which is no longer in business. When the delivery was done the chef would cook me a nice large burger…. at 9 a.m. Mmmmmm…. burgers for breakfast!
Once I retired , I made it a point eat anything other than breakfast food for breakfast . I’ve done everything from beef stroganoff to deep fried breaded shrimp with fries . There have been times where I’ve had a bowl of cold cereal for supper because it’s quicker & cheaper than microwave meals.

Other conventional “rules” that deserve flouting:
