Well, dang, Ora Zella should do a version of the Mythbusters — Today, on FurBusters, we chop down a Christmas tree, set it on fire, and shoot it out of a cannon! I’ll also show you how to booby-trap Santa, tie him up, and take his sleigh for a joyride!

Does breaking cat news mean a cat was broken? Some people probably still light trees on fire. Not everyone has got an electric fireplace. We had the old fashioned one where the smoke would go up a chimney, and logs from a tree would keep the fire burning.

Lupin’s ears are burning… it’s how their going to burn the tree down. Also shows our heroes parenting style: gentle but firm no, angry old man no, and “YES YES BURN IT ALL”

Of all the issues I expected to encounter in Denver, SIL being upset that her mother’s obituary (which I am writing) will mention three great-grandchildren was not one of them.

For my part, I follow the precedent set by my paternal grandmother. One of my cousins was “married into” the family at age 10, which generated a bit of pushback … primarily from Dad’s older sister, whose two children were demoted from “first in the line of succession” as it were. (Cousin T is 52, whereas Cousin R is 50 and his sister is 49.) My grandmother decided Cousin T was a grandchild. Period, paragraph, 30. She even made a point of ensuring T was named on a cross-stitch listing all her grandchildren.

The Woman and I got married right around the time two of my nieces were born; their impending arrival was announced shortly after our engagement. My mother almost immediately started describing herself as having “one grandchild and two on the way.” The Sisters were given maybe five minutes to vent about this, and then my mother shut them down. Nothing has been said since, to the extent that no one in my family so much as uses the prefix “step-” when referring to The Boy. And after their one-year anniversary last January, my mom also started acknowledging a great-granddaughter. (Their two-year anniversary is next month; we’re all starting to look at The Boy and say “(bleep) or get off the pot!” but I digress.)

The MIL made Christmas stockings for all her grandchildren, and had done so for the first two great-grandchildren. We found The Girl’s half-finished stocking on her craft table. We’re going to put the finished portion in a frame with a little placard saying “From Grandma Susan [her “great-grandma” name], Christmas 2022.”

We have set a holiday tree on fire. Cut it up neatly, and burned it in the snow-covered backyard sometime in late March.

And that was the beginning of our relationship with the B*** Next Door, as she called the Fire Department on us…

Ora keeps her speed on high

    Asking questions with no restraint

    And sweet Pucky in reply

    Patiently answers with no complaint

Elvis, we have heard him sigh

Warns her sternly through the night

    But scamp Lupin in reply

Eggs her on with much delight

    Gloria, in excelsis cattus

Lupin and Ora need careful supervision. MythBusters would take them, perhaps. I can hear the quotes now.

“When in doubt, C4.”— Jamie Hyneman, MythBusters

I reject your reality and substitute my own! — Adam Savage, MythBusters

What I think you need is the “MythBusters Concerto in C-4”. — Sgt. J.D. Nelson, MythBusters

This is starting to feel like a bad idea.— Tory Belleci, MythBusters

Failure is always an option!— Adam Savage, MythBusters

This is why we can never have anything nice.— Grant Imahara (RIP), MythBusters

Oh oh oh, that sweet fuzzy baby velociraptor reminds me so much of the x-treme tortitude of my late, great Miss Tweedle Diva. What a blazing spirit she was, for 19 years. She taught me everything I ever needed to know about “I am the Cat who walks by herself and all places are alike to me. . . MINE.”

When my 2 girls were kittens the tree had no ornaments for the first 2 or 3 rows. As they got older we switched to unbreakable ornaments. Now that they are 15 and 16 yrs. old, we are back to a completed tree with all the family ornaments. And 2 lumps below the tree!

My new rescue cat is scared to death of the tree and will not go near it.

    Georgia,

I love the way you are writing Ora Zella. The way she said, “I’ve got some NOTES.” You could just hear the exuberance in her tiny voice.

She is going to be a lot of fun to follow in BCN. Thanks for bringing her in.

Lupinium: Great job thwumping, guys. I’m sure the Artisans will appreciate all your work.

    At the Artisan’s Studio

Sophititi: Lovely. This broken pottery will make a lovely sculpture.

Maat-Tilda: And some of these shards will be perfect in my latest tapestry.

Adobe Style: Iron Glove is preparing the gold for my kintsugi pieces. Like to help?

Iggy: I’d be glad to. Want to join me, Ora?

Ora Z: Sure. Do we have enough gold?

Adobe Style: I think so. Iron Glove and his brother Packer brought a whole bag full from the Very Good Pyramid yesterday.

Iggy: It’s nice to have rooms full of treasure.

Maat-Tilda: But Beatrixia is organizing the real treasure. A whole library full of scrolls!

We got our sweet Osiris a few days before Christmas in 1993, she had been surrendered to the pound by her owners a few days earlier. She spent the entire time that first Christmas sitting on the chair arm right beside the tree and watching it as if afraid it would disappear. In years to come she would knock them over trying to climb them but this first Christmas she just sat there watching. That along with so many other things she did led us to believe her people had moved most likely surprise TDY, there were a lot of military about. I bless them that they took the time to take her to the SPCA instead of just throwing her out and leaving. We had 20 wonderful years with this sweet and loving creature.
