Well this ought to be good! Perhaps Luann will meet a suave sky dive instructor that will pop her chute? Perhaps this is all an imaginative story being written by Luann? Perhaps there will be a full moon that night?
Even a (wo)man who is pure in heart and says h(ER) prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.
So if Luann, say, sprains an ankle or breaks a leg skydiving, will anyone send her flowers or give her rides the way Jack did after he dropped the bowling ball on her foot? Conversely, what will (or won’t) Luann do if Piro or Tara is injured?
I don’t think Luann’s cause is as bad off as people might think. When Luann brings in the snacks she makes kind of rhyme about what-all’s there. And Walt answers her with a continuation of the rhyme “Do you take tips?” So he is listening to her and responding in kind. Also note that Walt didn’t say yes or no to Tara’s skydiving plan. So in a way Tara is pushing him into doing thinks, a sort of bullying. (I knoow I’m going to get push-back for saying that but in a sense Tara is doing to Walt what Bets does to Gunther and since there is never a wait to see if Walt/Gunther has a response, that’s a kind of bullying.)
I think Tara is a daredevil looking for fun and excitement and hopes she found a friend/cousin who shares the same thing. Luann is up for the challenge, but only because she can’t resist the peer pressure.
Is Luann really going to jump out of an airplane?: Yup.
By herself?: No. Or, yes and no.
Some jump sites require a tandem jump (where you’re harnessed together with a professional and are (mostly) a passenger.
BUT.
At some schools you can skip the tandem jump the tandem jump, receive extended instruction and take a first non-tandem jump the same day.
After a day of training [6 to 8 hours] in our classroom, you will be prepared to make your first skydive. During your first few jumps, you will be assisted by two instructors who will be there to observe your skydive and guide you through the process.
In freefall, your instructors will use hand signals to communicate with you, helping you correct your body position, maintain altitude awareness, and stay relaxed.
Three skydivers making a formation during free fallAt approximately 5,500 feet, your instructors will release their grips on you as you deploy your own parachute.Once you deploy, the instructors will fly away and deploy their own canopies.
From there you’ll take control of your toggles and steer yourself into our wide-open student landing area, under radio guidance from an instructor on the ground.
How much does all this cost? A tandem jump can be had for about $249. The instruction with first (semi)solo jump option runs about $399.
Tara is still avoiding the assignment that is the entire purpose for Luann’s invitation. She is still diverting everyone’s attention to other activities. She ought to be challenged directly to stop the nonsense and join the effort to discuss the assignment, or welcomed to go elsewhere to seek divertissement.
So, Tara just books the jumps for her and Piro without any discussion? I assume these would be tandem jumps with instructors. I think earlier when Luann said she would jump it was because she wanted to be a part of the group, but I doubt that she will actually do it.
I like how it’s impossible to tell if Luann’s awkward expression in the last panel is due to realizing that her joke wasn’t funny or if it’s due to the fact that she agreed to go skydiving. Piro was looking at her seriously expecting a serious response, so I think Luann is embarrassed for having exaggerated her jokes when it wasn’t the case, also because right before Piro joked with her just fine. I’m glad Tara asked Luann if she really wants to join them to book her too. She seems really happy that her friend is coming too. Let’s hope that Luann likes the experience a lot, so much to follow them next time too.
I believe there are many people who could be happy together, the bar being one has a trait or physical attribute the other can’t abide, or they’re too similar in behaviours towards each other.
Will they ever talk about the class assignment? Tara seems to be more interested in her adventure calendar. Piro hasn’t agreed to it or said he’ll go. Wish Luann would chill.
Why did Luann go cross eyed when she heard skydiving? At least she’s realizing how stupid her one-liner jokes are, so that’s a huge plus! Get out your credit card Luann, because Tara isn’t paying your way. Where’s Frank when you need some skydiving money?
Luann already told Tara that she wanted to join them for skydiving. Now we learn that Tara made reservations for just her and Piro to do it. Now Tara is asking Luann if she wanted to go too? Tara knew Luann wanted to go. Very rude of Tara to do this in front of Luann.
I think Tara just made a booking for Piro and herself, leaving Luann out. Hence the “oh, did you want to…”Piro, on the other hand, immediately diverts his attention to Luann, and participates in silly, borderline lame puns, despite the fact he was looking at something as extreme as skydiving. He is interested in interacting with her, and Tara will have to try more, if skydiving isn’t enough to make him ignore Luann. Kind of afraid what “more” may be…
It blows my mind how many of yall come here day after day to just complain. It doesnt matter what any of the characters do, everyone here just nit picks it to death. IT IS A COMIC STRIP.
“After you jump out of the plane, count to ten and pull the ripcord. Your parachute will open up and float you gently to the ground where a truck is waiting to take you back to town. Any questions?”
“Yeah, what if it doesn’t open up?”
It will but just in case it doesn’t, count to ten again and pull the emergency rip cord and your emergency parachute will open up and float you gently to the ground where a truck is waiting to take you back to town. Any other questions?"
There weren’t so they took off. When the time came, they had to “help” him out of the plane. (Imaginary image of him being heaved out involuntarily.)
He counted to ten and pulled the rip cord….NOTHING happened!!
He counted to ten again and pulled the emergency rip cord….NOTHING HAPPENED!!
He said, “What you thought about that? I bet they ain’t truck number one waiting to take me back to town.”
So survey question: what’s a fun exciting experience for you guys, besides skydiving since it’s already been said? I like a good roller coaster personally. I used to enjoy paintball until I got shot in the throat by a frozen pellet, and laser tag until my knee finally gave up on me. But in a roller coaster all I gotta do is sit and enjoy.
Doesn’t anyone think Tara is being mean leaving LuAnn out when she said she wanted in? Seems like odd possessiveness with cousin. Or if u want fam only, don’t discuss in front of others.
Based on what Tara said in the second panel and her response in the third panel, it doesn’t look like Luann was “booked”. We may never see a skydiving episode.
The interesting thing about this this arc is the complex relationship among these three that’s developing. I think Tara is engaging Piro in this extreme sport (as well as talk of others) in an effort to knock Luann off balance, i.e. make her feel insecure (which she actually does now feel) in her attraction to Piro. And it’s working, based on her comments to Bern, a bit of a devious approach, whether she’s aware of it or not.

Now might be a good time to bring in Stef and Tiff as a potential fourth category.

Not surprised.
After-all, here’s a young woman that once took a dare from her two so-called “best friends” and ran to a mailbox wearing only a bikini.
Although Lu would do well to wear something a bit warmer than a bikini for her jump.
It gets a bit cold up there as she SCREAMS her way to the ground. ;-)
