Why is Luann even arguing about this with her parents? She already booked the flight. She obviously paid for it out of her own money since she’s not asking for financing. And at 19 she’s old enough to do lots of things, like skydiving, getting married, buying a house. Why should she even both talking to Negative Nancy?
It appears that Frank somehow overheard Luann discussing skydiving and did some research. That would explain how he knows the price of the “video package” and also how he was so ready in Monday’s strip with the factoid about skydiving versus bee stings.
There was an episode on THE GOLDEN GIRLS where Rose talked Miles into accompanying her skydiving, saying she did that with her late husband Charlie.
Then, at the last minute, Rose confessed she lied, saying Charlie didn’t like any sport, and she herself held back. In the last scene, she went to visit Miles in the hospital.
So…talking about it some more, maybe with Bernice or Gunther on Thursday, training on Friday and a jump on Saturday? Or is that too much, too soon? I’d like to see her happy and excited when she’s completed the jump safely.
Looks like Frank is going to try to tag along with Luann to fulfill some sort of “bucket list” item he has had for awhile. Nancy will likely veto Frank’s adventure but perhaps it will be beneficial for him as he could be encountering some sort of mid-life crisis.
Luann has still not told Nancy what it means to her “to impress friends”. She isn’t really interested in Tara’s impression. It is Piro who is the one she wants to impress — and whom she is afraid of losing any chance of having him become interested in her if she does not. That is her fundamental impetus, regardless of the $200 non-refundable cost of backing out. It’s that ol’ biological imperative at work.
Poor thing, she sounds like she thinks it’ll instantly turn her adventurous and brave in every aspect that entails by the nature of just doing a brave thing. If only it was as easy as that. But for what it’s worth it’s a start to trying new things. Go for it kid! It’s a bit scary given the low, low chance of things turning out bad, but the thrill will be worth the 200 bucks.
Regarding Nancy, she is really trying her best to get Luann to NOT do this and it’s kind of silly given it’s something thousands of people skydive safely every year… but I’m not a parent and I can’t help but kinda imagine that if I were I’d be a little freaked out at the idea of my kid being the one jumping out the plane, so I don’t really judge her for this. She already has one child in a career path that risks his life so Luann being risky will no doubt give her more gray hairs.
When I was in the Army, I applied to go to airborne jump school but was turned down because I was deemed a training asset at the time. Three years later, I was to be sent to the Engineer Officer Advanced Course and could try again, I wasn’t so interested in jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. Older and wiser?
Agree about the non-refundable money part is important. But on the other hand, it’s clear that Luann really wants to try skydiving, that she’s actually looking forward to do it and all her doubts are due to the normal fear of risk. I really think she’ll have fun with Tara and Piro. Seeing Frank’s enthusiasm and how they are talking about it with Nancy, I hope that the two of them will also join the group of teenagers, or book themselves to do it as a couple. Now, let’s see if Bernice will destroy Luann’s enthusiasm with her usual “magic”.
This story seems to be fizzling out pretty quickly. Why wouldn’t Luann know if all she got was the video package? Aren’t videos about sky-diving available for free on the internet these days? Maybe Tara got her a half price discount.
I’m very reluctant to predict with Luann, part of the spiritual soul here is unpredictability (why I always preach against projecting one’s own conclusions as to how the story goes; that floats some people’s boat, but not mine) but I think all three might go jumping, and like a virus, all the main characters will, at some point. It would be right up Bet’s alley (not Gun’s but he’d do it if Bets does) and Tara is adrenaline junkie too. But it’s just my own projection. I do think the Degroot’s will, other than Brad. I was going to say Toni would forbid it, bit their firefighters.
What if they are going to take a “dark” turn. Someone’s Chute does not open. I guess Luann would be exempt from this result, but Dad, Tara and Piro? Any of those three might not be safe…
How does Frank know that when Luann says $200 it most likely means that she got the video package, hmmm? I wonder if Nancy caught that and turns to grilling Frank.
I think Frank’s comment is setting up a skydiving video arc. He seems to be excited about the idea. Maybe they will get more comments than Bets and Gunther’s.
I say, Nancy, your idea that it’s “never a good reason” to do something because others are doing it—does that apply to falling in love? Being honest? Taking good care of yourself and your loved ones? Paying your taxes? Driving carefully? Being kind? Or any of hundreds of good things that lots of people do?
Go For It Luann! $200 is a steal if you also get a video of your experience! I had to have it explained to me that it’s not just an instructional video, it would be a video of your actual jump, the whole thing! Would it be a camera on the helmet?
The $200.00 will be waiting for her at the end of the jump—-but you gotta dive for it. I’d like to see her jump, if only to shut up people who say she’s dull as white bread
I see it as a metaphor for life as a parent. Everything my kids do feels like they’re diving out of a plane at times.
Acting like you’re happy for them instead of trying to stop them has a 50/50 chance of working out while the reverse rarely does with a strong willed child
Greg is playing with the need for external validation, first by showing Bets relationship to social media and now with Luann begging Nancy for validation. Humans do need external validation, no man’s an island, just be careful who you give that validator power too as an adult. Not everyone has your best interests at heart. But luann isn’t brave for jumping out of a plain with full paid for safety gear.
In the early 1970’s I had friends who were in a skydiving club. I don’t know how it is now, but I noticed that the landing isn’t that soft, and I decided not to participate.
I would take my camera into the plane, and take pictures of them jumping out of the plane. It was really exciting watching people jump out of an open door of a plane.
Then the pilot and I would fly around sight seeing and he would do crazy maneuvers. It was a lot of fun. There is nothing like a small plane.
