Not a Potter.. a Welder! Luann will be living the 1983 dream, a welder by day and exotic dancer by night… just like in Flashdance. ;)

Ofcourse, it’s always possible she becomes a famous adventurer/archeologist… like in Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

    Luann will have limitless possibilities!

I suppose Language Arts is not among those, considering she left out the common after, “Italian,” and before, “Pottery.”

It’s time Luann do the smart thing a lot of us realize in retrospect is the smarter play:

    1) Get a full-time day job, such as entry-level X-Ray tech at an aerospace titanium casting plant, CNC operator, Customer Service Rep, etc, that pays a good $20-$25 an hour.

    2) Attend online/blended classes at night to earn her Associates in Science degree, which is far easier to transfer to a 4 year university to just wrap up the 2 years of the major she eventually decides on (if she wants to do that after some real-world experience).

    3) Study and take the exams for a couple $500 entry-level professional certifications (Lean Six Sigma, Scrum, Netsuite, MS Azure, etc) so she has some valuable job skills to land her something that will let her split rent with Bernice on their own place, where she’ll be making $75-$85k before Bernice even graduates, and then she’ll have a better perspective of what she wants.

Of course, the obvious answer is to talk with Brad and Toni about her options.

Ten years seems like a long time for a basic medical degree, even for Americans. In countries where they teach real science in high school, the top level students can then go to med school and get their med degree in five to six years. Of course, time as junior doctor in a hospital, post grad training for a specialty (e.g neurosurgery) can add many more years on. Is the US system so different?

I don’t think Luann knows herself at all. She doesn’t know who she is. The take-charge incident says that’s who she is and yet she dismisses it. She is lost and needs guidance. Not from BATUBS. Professional help. Not Bernice.

Well, I guess that implies that Luann sees the writing courses as yet another dead end she won’t pursue. She really does have a knack for almost doing more than dipping her toes in.

I still say, (Evanses, feel free to consider this suggestion cause it would put Luann in a new direction) Luann working on a kids book, children’s cartoon, or traveling puppet show, would be a good way to take all her failed attempts at finding her path and put those to use. She used to want to sing and write songs? She can write songs for kids. She wants to write? Her writing is basic enough that kids could easily vibe with it. She wants to teach? She can teach this way. She used to do puppet shows at the library with the kids? This would be a good way to bring that full circle.

Heck, she could even get the Business-Lady Bobbsey Twins (Tiff and Bets) involved somehow. Gunther can sew the costumes (though him being written out and replaced with Knute and Crystal would be an attractive alternative. After the whole Irma and Al vs Bets then the aftermath of the roadtrip thing, he’s basically lost me as a presence in the strip. Sorry if you don’t agree, I used to be more patient with him but things changed.) Maybe Bernice will fail as a therapist and Luann can dress her up in a clown costume and have the children chase her around to keep her busy. IDK. It has potential is all I’m saying.

All just some suggestions here. It’d be better suited for Luann than a potter or a doctor or stuff that won’t really end up going anywhere.

Nancy is a great mother. I’m looking forward to these courses. Welding can bring Knute back in the strip and I would like to know what he and Cristal are doing. Pottery will help Luann express her creative side and Italian and archeology could mean that, someday in the future, Luann could take a trip to Italy and visit some archaeological sites, which would be wonderful. Let’s hope that Luann will go visit Mrs. Horner next week. I’d like to see her talk about her future with her mentor.

That’s a very eclectic list of subjects. But, I like all of ‘em. Welding, I’d love to do that. And, archeology, I did that in high school. Italian was my common language with my last church piano player, and pottery was an art I’ve never tried.

I’m not seeing the point of the story detour with Mrs. Horner. Did Greg and Karen want to gage reader response to the idea of Luann doing something in the health care industry? If so, the response was pretty positive (not to being an MD, but something like an EMT) and I hope they return to it eventually.

I hope Luann chooses something she likes. These are all hands-on subjects, except for the Italian… If she took art history and a science course like chemistry, she could go into art conservation. It could include archeology and pottery. Maybe she would eventually get to Italy to work.

Since this started with Bets and Tiffany, I think this arc is not complete until it circles around to them again. I’m surprised we haven’t seen Jack or Nil or Piro, since they are also in PCC.

She has the making of a great story if she ever gets back to Mrs.H’s class. How is the dear lady?

Kintsugi could be defined as welding pottery, and archaeology could be relevant, but for an integrated field theory of Luann’s classes, she should be studying Japanese, not Italian.

having useless classes at the college level, makes big college debt. pottery classes can be taken at a community art center. at ours, there are also decorative welding classes. but most serious people who wants to get into welding goes to a trade school.

….and the arc ends with Luann no closer to being a functional and independent adult, and in fact (since we’ve already seen how she’s capable of stepping up in emergencies) with nothing new revealed. The status quo is the same as it was before, and it’s doubtful we’ll even see what was wrong with Mrs Horner.

Not a total waste of time (since it’s always nice to see Luann be competent for a change) but not far off. Stay tuned for the Sunday strip where Luann is a trainwreck again.

Actually, welder is the smartest thing that Luann has ever considered. The demand for welders is only on the rise, and the pay is excellent. Toss in the fact that you can get an apprenticeship and get paid to receive your education rather than going into debt and it’s an intelligent move.
