what i find more UNFORGIVABLE are those nitwits who write “could/should/would of…” instead of “could/should/would HAVE…” what’s funny is that i haven’t seen anyone write “may of….”
I bought a t-shirt at the Brookfield Zoo, It has two scenarios, one says, “Let’s eat, Bob” Bob is sitting at a table with two sharks. The next says, “Let’s eat Bob.” The two sharks are sitting at the table, but Bob is ON the table! ;)
Other than that, don’t get too critical if the person isn’t a regular offender. I make the most mistakes when I don’t have much time and post in a hurry. It happens to the best of us. Now, people that do it every time, well, yeah, guess they weren’t paying much attention in class. Teachers can only teach those willing to learn.
And let’s not for forget the overuse of capital letters, putting commas in the wrong places, apostrophes in simple plurals, and quotes for emphasis.— C. J. PrairieDog, President, Apostrophe and Quotation Mark Protection Society of North Dakota
There used to be a sign on a real estate development around here that advertised “5, 10, 15, and 20 Acre TRACKS for sale!” Drove me NUTS every time I saw it!
Fore the most part I’m okay reading (input) but when i am writhing or trying to spell (output)things are not so good.
All vowels are interchangeable at any time. So are 3s and Es. And at times they go missing altogether. I also used to have a problem with Ws, Ms and Ns. There was also a not-a-letter that had 3 humps, not just one (n) or two (m).
I love my spell check because when i am seeing the word in print i can see (most of the time) instantly where i went wrong.
I have no use for spelling or grammar nazis. They have no idea how some of us struggle with even simple spelling.
Remember, English is a “Mutt” language, taking elements from Ancient Greek, Latin, French, Spanish, German, and a bunch of other languages as well. That’s why it’s a nightmare…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mfz3kFNVopk
As my mother would have said, "Theese casn’t tell I how to speak, snow. Probably not spelled / spelt correctly but there doesn’t seem to be a local dialect dictionary built into Firefox.
If you want “fun” with spelling, look up “Kaos in ce klasrum”. It was originally in a Reader’s Digest book for young readers, dated 1961. I remember reading it when it first came out.
As a child I wore Forrest Gump"s braces mounted to the pug-ugly Buster Brown shoes so I spent a lot of time at the library where Muriel always had the right answer for me when needed. I loved her way more than I do SIRI. I hope she knows how many of us still appreciate how she helped us along the way to loving an education.
My favorite annoyance substituting more for ‘er’. More happy instead of happier, more proud – prouder, etc. The worst one – more better. Let me get out of here while I’m still rational.

how about the current use of ‘get ahold of’ instead of ‘get hold of.’ Or ‘meet up with’ instead of ‘meet.’

And the cats have the right attitude. They are indifferent to the minor quibbles we humans inflate into ‘breaking news.’

Auto correct didn’t exist in 1960. We had to use mechanical typewriters. “Auto correct” was a few gallons of White Out, & a dictionary.

My wife, who is learning English really gets confused by words sounding alike, meaning something else, and spelled differently.
I drive her crazy with sentences like: " They’re there, but here we hear, it’s not where they wear their wares. "

If you type, “Oh, c’mon,” autocorrect insists on a b instead of an n and you have to argue with it to write this sentence. Why, I have no idea.
