Not a word or a honk? Honestly, doesn’t preschool teach children anything these days? How will she ever be ready for kindergarten?

(I’m pretty sure the Girl’s age was frozen in the strip at preschool level.)

Very sweet. Love the hearts.

Hand signs are universal. They are understood no matter what language is spoken including Bark, Meow, and obviously Goose.

The Girl looks like an adorable little gnome in that hat!

For adults, I recommend Paul Gallico’s The Snow Goose. Short and moving. He also wrote a number of excellent cat books; I’m particularly fond of The Silent Miaou.

Wishing I could give this one many, many likes.

The geese never leave in larger cities. When I lived in Calgary they were there all winter in open stretches on the river.

I’m reminded of the old Red Skelton, Gertrude and Heathcliffe joke:

Gertrude and Heathcliffe are flying along when Heathcliff says…..

Heathcliffe: Boy Gertrude, look at all of those dump people down there.

Gertrude: Dumb people, what makes you think those people are dumb?

Heathcliffe: Cause they’re all looking up.

You’re lucky the geese are up in the sky, because when they’re walking they will spread out their wings and be BIGGER than you.

Well, it’s not a V, but good enough. Tommy’s presence at the BPH is making me look forward to the upcoming day when he, Sophie, and their People move in. Also, look at that big pile of leaves Puck saved the house from.

Probably the nicest thing I’ve ever seen a goose do. :P

Love how that one goose turns his head and, notices the girl’s, heart!

Reminds me of when the White Pelicans start practising for their migration. They start to form up into an echelon formation then suddenly, one will veer off (Did I leave the gas on?). The formation comes together again and a different one drops back (I think I have a charlie horse in my wing).

It looks very strange but they are actually sorting for speed and stamina before the long trip.

I have never lived somewhere with (or below) migrating geese and would like to hear them someday. Briefly. I think they would keep me awake, and of course if it’s cold enough that the geese have to leave, I don’t want to be there either!

Migration is the Olympics of the bird world. A bar-tailed godwit was tracked electronically migrating over 8400 miles in 11 days!

That sounds impossible but they do not eat or sleep during the migration and can fly 55 miles per hour.

So, don’t be surprised if they don’t wave back. :)

“About a week before I wrote this, our family took a long car ride. As we were setting up a tent, the Girl told me she had been watching a group of geese flying high in the sky over our car. She had made the little heart hand gesture she likes to give to creatures from a distance and held it up to them. And, with wonder and in the magic of childhood, she told me they flew into a heart shape in response. I loved her story and asked if I could write it into the comic for her. And so this one is for Guinevere. ❤️ And that magic of childhood. May it last a lifetime.”

We’re on the migration path. Parks and fields are full of geese.

Awwww. How sweet!

I have a dog that speaks goose. He can honk with the best of them! My vet calls it “reverse sneezing” or something.

Those are Canadian Geese, they only migrate about a mile. Around here they are considered nuisance animals. Too bad they don’t taste good or I would have a freezer full just by walking in the front yard.

I kept watch geese until a few years back when I moved to town. I’ve never felt safer!!! I also had white geese as pets – totally domesticated to the point of giving hugs. We had a pond on the propety where many wild geese typically rested for a few days on their migration and my geese loved the company. So fun to watch.

Oh! I’m crying now. That’s beautiful!

Late. The geese in this area flew south weeks ago.

Awww, I had a hat like that when I was little, and I used to wave to the southbound geese too, probably a few days before they passed over RI. Hearing the geese and stopping to look up as they flew over — what a nice memory.
