Go WITH them Jack. Just Go. Offer to drive them to the party yourself, or follow them to the gig.
Yeah, I know that Lu and Tara are strong, independent young women that DONāT need a mere man, and how Dare You think that they Do, BUT.
I donāt like that rather āLecherous lookā the plaid shirted guy with the Fred Flintstone haircut is giving Luann in panel 2. And while I think the gals handle themselves, I hope they donāt walk into a situation where they are the only two women among 15 drunken, chest thumping, males.
Besides YOU picked these ladies up and as a gentleman You have a responsibility for seeing that they get home SAFE, no matter how āOld Fashionedā that notion IS.
Now Go. And donāt smoke any of them āfunnyā cigarettesā¦ā¦..,
I agree with you. Most things are equal, but some are not. Alcohol affects a woman faster than a man, and a strong, independent woman can be rendered helpless swiftlyāespecially if she has no prior experience with drink. Not to mention Jack works out and Luann does not.
Itās time for Luann to get out into the world a little more, however this seems to be the wrong crowd ā that Tara got in trouble with before. Jackās spidey sense will start to tingle. The big guy will achieve hero status following a rescue.
Oh goody, time for a Very Special Episode about the evils of alcohol. Weāre going to be shown how awful these guys are for asking Tara to drive them even though giving up your keys to a sober friend is 100% the right move when youāre drunk. But since alcohol is evil and these guys have consumed it, theyāre obviously terrible human beings who canāt be trusted at all. Next weāll find out that these scumbags may have alsoā¦. tried to sleep with girls they hadnāt married first! The horror!
Iām not so sure there is a āpartyā . Could be just a group of drunk guys looking to hit on some girls. While this ātoon doesnāt usually get into dangerous situations, I can recall high school days when Bernice was madly in love with a guy who hid drugs in her locker, and she almost ended up in jail over it. And then there was the guy who used a wheelchair who Bernice loved, and he almost burned up in a fire. Maybe itās Luannās turn to find herself in dangerā¦
This is Gregās brilliant misdirection working in a direction that happens to college age students all the time. Finding yourself in a possibly dangerous situation, which is enticing, but scary at the same time, with a couple friends who get along, but are different. There is Luann, who is reluctantly intrigued by the party, Tara is is adventurously aware of what could happen but wants to go have fun (at least she will be driving and the friend knew he should not try to drive) and Jack, the risk-averse, gentleman who I am liking more and more, and is protective of the girls, and in particular, I feel Luann. Either he will go, or he will follow in his truck. I vote he follows. Itās better he not be in the car with the other four.
If it was a Indian movie (Bollywood)- 1. Luann and Tara will go to the party with the guys2. Halfway to his home, Jack will suddenly discover L or T had mistakenly dropper their purse in Jackās car3. He will return to the party4. Will find something bad5. There will be a big fight.6. Jack will win it7. There will be >4 minutes song and dance (set somewhere in Switzerland or Mauritius)8. Happy ending
Todayās strip made me realize how rarely Greg uses thought balloons!. Which, of course, makes me think that the text in the thought balloon must be very, very important!
Yes, itās a comic.. Only in a comic could a couple of handsome guys like those two entice women to get into their car and go to a party with them. Golden rule of partyin: Do not under any circumstances go anywhere you canāt get back from.
Cāmon honestly, heās gonna let his friends go anywhere with two plastered guys? As a real friend youād go with them or convince to avoid bad decision. That night would not end well.
How stupid ARE those girls? They know basically nothing about those guys, at least one of them is already drunk, and theyāre going with them to an āepic partyā at an unknown location. How are they going to get back?I just hope Jack doesnāt get the blame here.
Youāll always notice that the one-off characters in Luann are generic looking, with no details to their appearanceā¦ that said, this is NOT a good idea for either of you Luann and Taraā¦
It appears that Jack is being re-booted in the strip as a mature, responsible person who sincerely cares about Luann. Does Team Evans want us to root for him as a future serious love interest for out heroine? Letās see just how heavy-handed this new portrayal becomes. Is it time to break out the posters and banners rooting for Jack?
Trust your gut and go, worst that will happen is youāll miss your class. If you donāt go it could be far worse than missing a class. This has nothing to do with women can take care of themselves, this has to do with being a concerned friend.
Donāt go, Jack. Sheās a young adult now (something we forget, remembering her from a few years ago) and needs the experience of making her own decisions as they come up. Not everybody survives it but we all need it.
OF COURSE there is nothing to worry about. Itās a party. Happens thousands of times. The only reason WE readers think thereās something to worry about is we KNOW something is gonna happen.
Two possible scenarios: First, Jack shows up to save Luann from trouble, or, second, something happens requiring the fire department to show up and Brad and Toni find her in trouble.
Sometimes you have to make some stupid decisions and hopefully survive them so next time you have the wisdom to make different choices.Sadly you can do everything right and still get killed by a drunk/distracted driver.
Oh no!! Jack, follow your gut. This is NOT good! :O Could this be the beginning of him and Luann finally recognizing they have feelings for each other? I see Luann getting into trouble, Jack worried to death over her, and finally rescuing her, and Jack becoming her knight in shining armorā¦ ahhh Iām a hopeless romantic. ;)
Things that may or may not happen before this Arc is over:
1) We meet Taraās āroomieā and she just happens to be the āCoupon Ladyā that ripped Les off a couple of months ago.
2) We Meet Taraās āroomieā and itās a āHE.ā
3) The gals are never in any ādangerā at the so-called āpartyā but Jack blunders in anyway and makes a Fool of himself, a-la Gunther.
4) We Meet the ābad crowdā that Tara ran with, and got her kicked out of Mooney U.
5) The Guyās idea of a āpartyā is getting drunk and playing Fortnite, PUBG, And Overwatch, and they hardly notice that there are even females there.
Iāve seen enough true crime shows to have a very bad feeling about this. Of course, Iām sure that Greg Evans isnāt going to have Luann or Tara be raped or murdered, but I still have a hunch that something very bad is about to happen.
Jack ā Obviously Jack has matured greatly since the art class arcs and bowling date episode. That Jack would have followed along with enthusiasm. This Jack realizes he has early responsibilities; either job or school related. He is also less exuberant and exhibits a more adult responsibility toward his āwards.ā BTW: I made the comment back then that ādog park talkā would be a watershed moment for Jack and possibly for Luann.
Luann ā I still cannot fathom GnK portraying Luann as this naĆÆve. Sheās certainly not that innocent. Sheās had plenty of run ins with the āwild sideā with Quill. Can she possibly be this jazzed up by the events of the evening? Is Tara so much a Svengali character to dominate and lure away our āPoor Little Nell?ā
Tara ā Tara is hard to read from the past two strips. Her responses and expressions have been particularly neutral (introspective?) toward this party. And believe me, Greg is adept at making expressions congruent with what he wants to portray.
It is an obvious set up for a #MeToo plot line but given that he has avoided sex like a plague (because of syndicators?) this would be a near impossible topic to do justice to. Weāll see.
The Evans have done a significant amount of foreshadowing, with this arc. I smell a hard lesson about drinking and driving, just in time for the holidays, about to happen.
I smell tragedy becoming a long-term triumph. Watch where Lu sits in the vehicle, in the strips of the coming days. I posit that she will be the only survivor of the accident that is about to happen. Jack will come visit her in the hospital, and the feelings that the two have for each other will blossom.
1. Luann looks a little hesitant, but still wanting to do āwild thingsā, like sheās said. Beware!
2. Tara is ā ambivalent, I think. Hopefully sheās just gonna drive those āpillars of the communityā home to sleep it off! I hope sheās learned from her past, maybe call, or have Luann call Jack. And, ā¦
3. Jack looks like heās trying to convince himself that itāll be OK. He has played football, so he has to have an idea as to where this might lead. He might just silently follow.
No morality play here, but this will conclude this week ā maybe.
My take is Luann probably saw movies where girls get into bad situations at frat parties but her thinking is they were just movies and that she is with Tara and she will be fine. The reality is she doesnāt really know Tara and even less the crowd she ran with at Moony. She knows she got expelled from Moony for theft and Tara claimed to have learned a lesson and Luann took her word at face value. The reality is in this strip ā Tara has not learned her lesson. She is rejoining her old crowd who, from the appearances and words of those guys, are bad news. Luann has no experience of college parties or spending time with kids of questionable character so she does not know what she is walking into. She has a misplaced trust in Tara. My hope is Tara will have her back when things go bad at the party. They always do. The arc might end with Luann calling Toni, the relative but not by blood, to bail her out and ask her to keep her secret.
Give the wasted broās some credit for having the sense to ask Tara to drive for them. (I assume that, unlike our three ārowdiesā who got kicked out right away, the broās stayed all the way through the show and got sloshed on ridiculously overpriced lousy beer.)
So Luann told Jack āIt was a blast!ā ā including getting kicked out of the stadium. Luann has been home with Puddles too much. And she is obviously gravitating toward Jack.
Gunther shows up with his backpack and cleans out the joint. Jack shows up at the last minute and Gunther, not knowing Jack well, mistakes him for one of the frat guys. Time to cue up Stroke 9ās āLittle Black Backpackā
.
ā« Donāt want to, donāt want to talk about it, I say why not, Donāt want to think about it, I say thereās got to be some good reason For your little black backpack up, Smack, turnaround heās on his back and
Donāt want to tango with you, Iād rather tangle with him, I think Iām gonna bash his head inā¦ āŖ
Lots of different things to think about today. A few of what I consider the more interesting ideas that crossed my mind are:
1) Something about the āwastedā guyās facial profile has a little bit of a look of our newest Supreme Court Justice. If as some have suggested, this is going to be an arc related to #MeToo ideas, I wonder if Greg drew this fellow intentionally just for this purpose? Greg does not seem to add much āpoliticalā focus here, so it seems unlikely. And, I am not sure if there has been enough time from when the hearings occurred to have comics made then reach us. But, the look of that kid does seem in profile to have that look.
2) Self-describing oneās self as āwastedā seems to indicate this fellow is up to no good. To me, āwastedā as a term seems to shape his character to be more negative. Now, that said, to me, it is not the drinkingā¦. hell, I drank in college. The issue for me is how he described his drinkingā¦ that is the red flag. And, of course people can drink and still be responsible, caring adults. But, the self-proclaimed āwastedā guy does not seem to fall into the category of a drinker who is responsible and caring.
3) The very act that Tara & Luann are going to a nebulous party with guys who for the most part are strangers and without transportation of their ownā¦. just stupid on both their parts. They are young and want to exploreā¦ but you do not explore potentially dangerous (or at least nebulous) thingsā¦ without an exit plan. They have no car, no way to get out of the situation if it becomes necessary. That is stupid.
4) I feel a bit annoyed that Tara and Luann basically have willingly left Jack in favor of this nebulous party. Jack should not have to be accompanying them just to be chivalrous and provide them transportation homeā¦. but I bet he will by the end of the arc.
Hopefully, no one winds up in the hospital or worse.
Young women getting in a car with a couple of guys they donāt really know that well and whoāve been drinking? What can go wrong? I wonder who will wind up posting bail for Luann and Starr?
Okay, I see a way out of all of this. Like, ALL of it. Itāll take a second, though. And it starts dark. Stay with me.
They accompany The Two Stooges to this party. Things get way, way out of hand. There are drinks and drugs and all sortsa mischief available. Luann partakes in most of it, hoping to impress Tara.
Later, around 3 a.m., she gets into a car whose driver is clearly intoxiated beyond belief. Tara is MIA at this point. Jack is not there to save her. Bernice does not magically appear to bore some sense into her. Nor does Gunther. The car drives away.
Over the course of 18 panels (this IS the Luanniverse, where the time continuum is roughly the same as Our World vs. Narnia), the worst happensā¦the car crashesā¦the last panel is filled with black inkā¦
ā¦and then Luann wakes up, aged 13 years, in the year 2018. She posts something online about the āweird afā dream she just woke up from. The entire strip starts over from the beginning, only maybe this time Our Heroine has a personality beyond āthinks boys are cute.ā
And weāll never have to visit Les and Gunther in their Fisher-Price-lookinā-* house again.
Going off with a couple Drunk idiots who are planning to get even More Drunk to a Party where the Only person you even Vaguely know will soon be Passed Out.
I donāt think this will segue into a sexual misconduct episodeā¦I think the foreshadowing is showing us that alcohol and vehicles will play a part. I foresee an accident (bad one?) on the horizon. Luann has always been pretty level headed, so Iām surprised that she is about to do something so reckless. Also, it tells me that she has zero interest in Jack as a love-interest. If she DID, she wouldnāt go off with these strangers and kooky Tara. She would hang with Jack. I know I would have stayed with a boy I was interested in back in college, rather than run off to a party. Yeah, I think Jack will follow them. And probably save the day (call 911? Drag Luann from a burning car?). Perhaps Luann will have an epiphany about Jackās possibility as a boyfriend once he āsaves the dayā. Canāt wait to find out.
A huge, clear headed college football player and sloshed softies who could end up in a world of hurt. Outcome predictable, case closed. Next story line, please.
Let us remember this is a family strip. Nothing truly bad is going to happen to Luanne and Tara. If this was real life, this could be a disaster, but itās not. The girls will learn a lesson; Jack may, or may not, save the day, and the arc will switch to something totally different. Like back to Gunther and Les being idiots.
Just two days ago everyone thought this arc would be all about Overzealous Twerp Security Guard and how or if he knew Tara. Looks like the stakes are higher, maybe?
Cut Tara some slack. There are a lot of reasons she might still be stuck with these party guys ā she may have signed a lease and be stuck living there till its up, she might have grown up with the roommate, she might just not want a friend driving drunk, she might just trust them as she may have known them longer than Luann who, from Taraās perspective, is a bit of a potential narc (nothing against Luann but itās always the one rule following kid with the least skin in the game whoās the weakest link in any potential mischief. And Luann is GREAT at following rules, the same way Tara is great at breaking them.). Tara can handle herself pritty well, and she isnāt drinking or doing anything wrong, but Luann is a bit of a liability at this point. Taraās best bet is to try and send Luann home with her very nice, very safe beau and limit her time around Luann to nice good girl activities to build up her reputation. It would be kind of funny if Fay was at the party after having sneaked out though:).
Oh, and Jack? There is something to worry about. Luann may end up dating one of there guys. She canāt wait forever. Better figure out what you want from this relationship, fast.
I dislike this on several levelsā¦. A ā itās rude to leave an event without the people you arrived with.. B ā even though he gave Starr the keys.. they are not āpartyingā at Luanns level.. and she isnt aware of her surroundingsā¦. C ā While i dont think Jack should go withā¦ he should at least speak up and say.. this is a bad idea

If Jack doesnāt change his mind, Luann is going to be the one who gets in trouble, not Tara

What do you want to bet Bernice is going to go on a rant about Tara before this arc is through.

Give the wasted broās some credit for having the sense to ask Tara to drive for them. (I assume that, unlike our three ārowdiesā who got kicked out right away, the broās stayed all the way through the show and got sloshed on ridiculously overpriced lousy beer.)

I remember in āFor Better or For Worse,ā teenager Allison Creemore (great name) got into a similar mess.

So Luann told Jack āIt was a blast!ā ā including getting kicked out of the stadium. Luann has been home with Puddles too much. And she is obviously gravitating toward Jack.

I wonder who will wind up posting bail for Luann and Starr?
pepnkids over 6 years ago
Starr is a very bad influence. I thought Gregās Luann was smarter than this. Itās gonna be a bad night for Luann.
