Do you want to know her better after this? I am thinking of Dirk – how terrified Toni was to accept a simple friendship with Brad because of what Dirk would do to Brad. She tried hard to keep Brad at arm length and warned him about Dirk. Dirk was suspicious, possessive, paranoid, a bully – everything a girl would not want in a boyfriend. I suppose Toni thought he was protective at first but came to realize it was not the case and did not know how to leave him. Bets has the potential of being another Dirk – becoming possessive of Gunther, isolating him from his friends, confrontal with all of his female friends and warn them off. I believe Luann strip had the highest readership during the Toni-Brad-Dirk triangle arcs and I wonder if Greg is trying to revive that through Bets? Revive Dirk through Bets.
THAT, is one excellent analogy, CAP. Bets is starting to come across like a female version of Dirk, Toni’s possessive old boyfriend. And HE treated her like crap, until Brad came along.

One way to look at this exchange is from the last panel backward, which means that Gunther thinks negatively that Bets would think he would photograph a nude lingerie spread of Tiffany. Frustration, and maybe a bit of anger. I think though that Bet’s face should be looked at as well. She responded in panel one to his sensible, non-flustered explanation of what he agreed to do, and she responded “that’s it.” and he realizes what his fluster might have left her with the incorrect impression. I think this continues not with his frustration, contrary to the seeming weight of opinion, but driven by her reaction. Looking him directly in the eyes. I think it’s an expression of a slight smile of approval. I think Gunnie has passed a test. I could be all wet, but think this is where this arc is going. She is an update to Irma in a way, all cute, and possessive, and possible serious girlfriend, who is very impressed with honesty.
Gunther: “Tiffany wants to eBay some lingerie she has, and she wants me to take photos of it on my sewing mannequin. But now that I think of it, they’d sell faster and would look better if YOU modeled them!”
Bets: “WHY? Because I’m a DUMMY or something??”

I Mean, after an awkward introduction to Tiffany at her place, when Bets accompanies him there. And after they get Tiff’s lingerie and jewels back to Gunther’s bedroom to photograph. And Bets tries some of that lingerie on! One LOOK, and I’d say that Gunther will very quickly come to his senses!
Although I’ve GOT to ask: Why didn’t Tiffany use the SAME photographer that took those plus sized model pics of her last year?
Looks like Gunther will invite Bets to the photo session. With lingerie and a mannequin, we can be sure Tiff will be in a flirtation competition mode. Bets – help out! During the session, hold Gunther’s hand from time to time – so that Tiff knows they are dating. It’s time anyway for at least that much action with Gunther & Bets.

Gunther answered the phone on a date (interrupting Bets…only answer if it might be an emergency and even then excuse yourself and let the other person finish), and his half of the conversation sounded suggestive and then he didn’t just say yesterday what he said today.
Ok, bad writing. But, he said the words, and she’s being totally reasonable, and really displaying the same impressive willingness to listen that she had in her first arc.
And if she wasn’t already just giving Gunther a playful hard time, she’s perfectly set up to do it now.
Hopefully on to a positive conversation and some details on Bets. Is she in college? Working? Both? Major? Job? Interests other than SF and superheroes? From Pitts? Family nearby? Inquiring minds want to know.

And this is after he tells her he is “less Les as it gets” (she knows he is rooming with Les – Fuse episode) – and now this. Then the phone call at the movie theatre. Keep in mind, he has grown up with the others and she hasn’t. He is starting to come across as a liar and cheater.
Most of us have read that strip for years and know Gunther fairly well. Bets just met him. When you go back and look at the strips, it has been one screw up after another because Gunther wasn’t using his head, even though he didn’t initiate those incidents. We know Gunther is a nice guy. Bets doesn’t know yet and may never know. Gunther seems to be lacking common sense and has no feel for the ways of the world considering how tied he was to his mother’s apron strings.
Well, maybe he has come to some sort of realization, but which way. One where he thinks Bets is too possessive, like so many seem to think, or one of self-examination of all that has occurred every time they have gone out and put himself in her shoes. Or maybe the Evans have something else mind (besides torturing us readers) and are playing with our minds and spring some surprise on us.
Personally, if I was a Bets, I’d have been trucking elsewhere after the Taco Town episode with an “Adios loser, I hope you and your friend Luann will be very happy together”. Wait for it …. that loud Yippy-Yi-yay was Mordy screaming from the rooftops so loud it could be heard around the globe (sorry Mordock, couldn’t resist :):):) ).
You won’t be able to get close to other women without a fight. So, if you don’t have to protect yourself for that, you’d better get rid of her as soon as possible.
I’m just hoping Greg is just setting up story arc to show how some people’s early dating experience happens. There’s a lot is conclusion jumping happening here. Okay, I think we’re learning a lot more about the readers of this strip than the characters. And there seems to be a lot of you looking for any excuse to break them up. These two should not be so serious so soon. They should find some privacy, get a little physical, make out, just check the chemistry levels and have some fun. They can discuss her ex-husband and his Peruvian baby at another time.
I think Gunther is not annoyed at Bets. He’s annoyed at HIMSELF because she sees him in an entirely different light than he is in reality and he’s having trouble processing it. BTW I love his wardrobe change from the plaid shirts to the tee he is wearing. Bets is having a positive impact on him and she is building his confidence. A cool girl seeing a guy as handsome, charming and in demand can be a real boost to the male ego.
Greg has invested three days in this phone call and its fallout. He started a day early (Saturday) to give himself a full six days for this vignette to play out. Where is Greg going???
It’s hard to imagine a Gunther-Bets falling out; much less a break up at this point. Physical appearance aside, Bets is too interesting a character to drop so soon. She’s a character introduced solely as a female companion for Gunther… so far. Several of Gunther’s idiosyncrasies have been exposed to Bets, yet we know so little about her, except for a chameleon-like ability to change color (lol). That aside, we know she’s dated Les and others, apparently with negative results. So where is this going?
Maybe Bets and Gunther will have a spat over expectations, with some sort of positive or negative resolution. Maybe they’ll have that heart-to-heart conversation some are calling for and we’ll get to know more about Bets. Maybe Gunther will introduce Bets to Tiffany. Wow. There are many ways that could go. BFF’s and roomies to cat claw rivals have been suggested.
Me? I’ll just have to wait for Saturday, I guess. :o)
Hopefully, this won’t become a Batman vs. Wonder Woman scenario … (Actually, I believe there is a story or two in the DC Universe where those two characters do hook up)! ;)
Bets now knows that Gunther sews. When Gunther made the Sexy Witch costume for Luann there was a segment of him taking her measurements. He was embarrassed; she was coy. I wonder how Greg would handle a similar situation with Bets today?
“One Wonder Woman costume coming right up! First, have a glass of wine while I get my tape measure. Pull up a beanbag and relax.”
Gunther, you are just being obtuse at this point. You should have an easier time than this in recognizing how your various 1/2 conversations can appear to others.
Bets… you really should have more of an inkling at this point that Gunther is not a Lothario who is bound and determined to deceive you.
With the above two things stated…. I can understand Gunther’s grumpy look at the end…. and I can understand Bets frustration from what she heard of the initial conversation.

Perhaps it is time for Gunther to take Bets and the two of them go purposefully “hang out” with Tiffany and Luann a bit so that Bets can get a better understanding of the way both of these females interact with Gunther?
It would probably make Gunther a whole lot less appealing for Bets, but since Gunther seems hell bent on not doing much himself in terms of representing himself to Bets as HE wants…. he might as well let the status quo reign…. and let Luann and Tiffany define him for Bets.

What G&K deem to be “hilarity ensues™” often turns into agony for us readers – and I know I’m not the only one to say this.
Granted, this is a comic strip about young adults not far removed from being teenagers – and maybe not removed at all when it comes to their behavior. Learning about life is a theme in the comic, I get that.
But showing us time after time after time that one of our favorite characters just cannot learn from his mistakes, at a certain point, it’s not funny anymore.
And I’d say that the portrayal of the female here is not much better. We can (and many have) assume that she, too, has a most checkered dating history, a reason that she, like our hero, turned to robo-date to enhance her personal life.
Most of all, I, personally, am disappointed that, at a point when this arc started trying to redeem itself (Friday, when Tiffany grew a spine and decided to downsize her wardrobe) – that almost immediately, G&K decide it’s time to drag Gunther into the mix for what now appears to be total denigration of his character.
Yesterday, I complained that it appears that too many people wantGunther to give up on Bets OR for Bets to give up on Gunther – with not much middle ground: Pick your sides and start shooting!
Early in the week, not sure how G&K intend to resolve this – IF they plan to.
All I can say is, for years now, it seems as if Gunther arcs are designed to frustrate not only Gunther fans, but readers in general!
Yes, she started out black and that made her and Gunther a more interesting couple. Greg seems to have chickened out on a bi-racial couple. I thought at first the colorist made a mistake. But, Bets has been white for several days, so it must be deliberate.
My take on Bets is, she sees Gunther as a “catch” that must have had many girlfriends. She is NOT a Dirk, she last dated several Dirks and if Gunther is a Dirk, she wants nothing to do with him.
Bets is not controlling or possessive with Gunther. She is simply asking normal questions in an attempt to understand the situation. I think she is very patient with the dense Gunther.
Many of you don’t seem to understand what behavior is controlling. Tell someone what to do or stopping them from doing something is controlling. Bets never does any of that. She is simply trying to understand all the convoluted situations Gunther is in.
Although it has been weeks for us readers, Gunther and Bets are still on their first date. Gunther won’t stay off the phone when he should be giving his undivided attention to Bets, and Bets won’t stop jumping to conclusions. She has a suspicious mind.
Someone above was wondering why someone would buy anyone’s old lingerie/undergarments. If you look at them, they all still have tags on them., indicating that they were all still new. Unless those are tags Tiff put on used items to sell them. Two things go against that idea, though:

1. I have been on Ebay many times over the years, and I do not recall seeing used clothes on there with tags on them. The price is on the “buy it now”, or it may be at a price that is bidding up. No tag required. When you do see clothes on there with tags on them, it will say “NWT”, which is new with tag.

2. Do any of us think Tiff has had a man to her room and displayed her body in any of those outfits as a precursor/enticement to sex? I do not believe so. She is not one of my favorite characters and I think she is an airhead, but not a wild sex goddess who would have put a lot of mileage (or actually any mileage) on those items.
I want to see these two work it out, because they have a lot in common, but they have a long way to go. The mega-happy ending is that Tiffany loses her arrogance (along with her expensive tastes) and falls for the class nerd, but that’s not bloody likely. Gunther and Bets should work things out. Remember something else…they’re still pretty young.
This arc still has possibilities…I think Bets and Gunther could be really good together. But, um, Bets started off as black, which was a cool dynamic, and now she’s what?

I think Gunther is not annoyed at Bets. He’s annoyed at HIMSELF because she sees him in an entirely different light than he is in reality and he’s having trouble processing it. BTW I love his wardrobe change from the plaid shirts to the tee he is wearing. Bets is having a positive impact on him and she is building his confidence. A cool girl seeing a guy as handsome, charming and in demand can be a real boost to the male ego.

Greg has invested three days in this phone call and its fallout. He started a day early (Saturday) to give himself a full six days for this vignette to play out. Where is Greg going???
It’s hard to imagine a Gunther-Bets falling out; much less a break up at this point. Physical appearance aside, Bets is too interesting a character to drop so soon. She’s a character introduced solely as a female companion for Gunther… so far. Several of Gunther’s idiosyncrasies have been exposed to Bets, yet we know so little about her, except for a chameleon-like ability to change color (lol). That aside, we know she’s dated Les and others, apparently with negative results. So where is this going?
Maybe Bets and Gunther will have a spat over expectations, with some sort of positive or negative resolution. Maybe they’ll have that heart-to-heart conversation some are calling for and we’ll get to know more about Bets. Maybe Gunther will introduce Bets to Tiffany. Wow. There are many ways that could go. BFF’s and roomies to cat claw rivals have been suggested.
Me? I’ll just have to wait for Saturday, I guess. :o)

It’s as if the light bulb has suddenly turned on, above Gunther’s dome. Bets, he sees through you, now.
Meanwhile, my prior assertion that Bets is Latina is given lots of creedence by the color and shading job of today’s strip.

Bets now knows that Gunther sews. When Gunther made the Sexy Witch costume for Luann there was a segment of him taking her measurements. He was embarrassed; she was coy. I wonder how Greg would handle a similar situation with Bets today?

Gunther, you are just being obtuse at this point. You should have an easier time than this in recognizing how your various 1/2 conversations can appear to others.
Bets… you really should have more of an inkling at this point that Gunther is not a Lothario who is bound and determined to deceive you.
With the above two things stated…. I can understand Gunther’s grumpy look at the end…. and I can understand Bets frustration from what she heard of the initial conversation.
* * *Against my better judgement….. and this may only be a pipe dream of sorts in terms of my thinking this may do anything…. but:
Perhaps it is time for Gunther to take Bets and the two of them go purposefully “hang out” with Tiffany and Luann a bit so that Bets can get a better understanding of the way both of these females interact with Gunther?
It would probably make Gunther a whole lot less appealing for Bets, but since Gunther seems hell bent on not doing much himself in terms of representing himself to Bets as HE wants…. he might as well let the status quo reign…. and let Luann and Tiffany define him for Bets.

What G&K deem to be “hilarity ensues™” often turns into agony for us readers – and I know I’m not the only one to say this.
Granted, this is a comic strip about young adults not far removed from being teenagers – and maybe not removed at all when it comes to their behavior. Learning about life is a theme in the comic, I get that.
But showing us time after time after time that one of our favorite characters just cannot learn from his mistakes, at a certain point, it’s not funny anymore.
And I’d say that the portrayal of the female here is not much better. We can (and many have) assume that she, too, has a most checkered dating history, a reason that she, like our hero, turned to robo-date to enhance her personal life.
Most of all, I, personally, am disappointed that, at a point when this arc started trying to redeem itself (Friday, when Tiffany grew a spine and decided to downsize her wardrobe) – that almost immediately, G&K decide it’s time to drag Gunther into the mix for what now appears to be total denigration of his character.
Yesterday, I complained that it appears that too many people want Gunther to give up on Bets OR for Bets to give up on Gunther – with not much middle ground: Pick your sides and start shooting!
Early in the week, not sure how G&K intend to resolve this – IF they plan to.
All I can say is, for years now, it seems as if Gunther arcs are designed to frustrate not only Gunther fans, but readers in general!

Yes, she started out black and that made her and Gunther a more interesting couple. Greg seems to have chickened out on a bi-racial couple. I thought at first the colorist made a mistake. But, Bets has been white for several days, so it must be deliberate.
My take on Bets is, she sees Gunther as a “catch” that must have had many girlfriends. She is NOT a Dirk, she last dated several Dirks and if Gunther is a Dirk, she wants nothing to do with him.

Bets is not controlling or possessive with Gunther. She is simply asking normal questions in an attempt to understand the situation. I think she is very patient with the dense Gunther.

Many of you don’t seem to understand what behavior is controlling. Tell someone what to do or stopping them from doing something is controlling. Bets never does any of that. She is simply trying to understand all the convoluted situations Gunther is in.

Although it has been weeks for us readers, Gunther and Bets are still on their first date. Gunther won’t stay off the phone when he should be giving his undivided attention to Bets, and Bets won’t stop jumping to conclusions. She has a suspicious mind.

Someone above was wondering why someone would buy anyone’s old lingerie/undergarments. If you look at them, they all still have tags on them., indicating that they were all still new. Unless those are tags Tiff put on used items to sell them. Two things go against that idea, though:

1. I have been on Ebay many times over the years, and I do not recall seeing used clothes on there with tags on them. The price is on the “buy it now”, or it may be at a price that is bidding up. No tag required. When you do see clothes on there with tags on them, it will say “NWT”, which is new with tag.

2. Do any of us think Tiff has had a man to her room and displayed her body in any of those outfits as a precursor/enticement to sex? I do not believe so. She is not one of my favorite characters and I think she is an airhead, but not a wild sex goddess who would have put a lot of mileage (or actually any mileage) on those items.

I want to see these two work it out, because they have a lot in common, but they have a long way to go. The mega-happy ending is that Tiffany loses her arrogance (along with her expensive tastes) and falls for the class nerd, but that’s not bloody likely. Gunther and Bets should work things out. Remember something else…they’re still pretty young.
