All this for a trip to the dog park? That is neither fun or exciting. This last week three weeks have been neither fun or exciting. Three of lame, old, hoary jokes that go nowhere and promise nothing in the future. Let’s pause in a moment of silence for the Death of Luann the former newspaper comic strip. Even Zits is better than this.
Dr Freud and Dr Jung were once friends until they had a disagreement. Luann start to realize that Bernice is having a freudian moment about having fun.
That’s a strange book to be reading for a freshman? sophomore? psychology course. But why expect anything to make sense now? Bernice has become unrecognizable; at this point she’s become a parody of herself. It’s grating.
The not plain Luann and her weirdly cute best friend, the brainiac Bernice. That bookbag looks very painful, but it’s dramatic exposition. I figure the dog park is the next stage in this arc; will it be a level leading to what? Romance? Something entirely unexpected? I go for the latter.
NOW GnK lined her eyes! Wonder if they read my comment about Luann being plain yesterday?? Her choices of clothes are improvements over the usual ones she wears. And…she’s wearing them to the park with lined eyes and earrings? Not for Bernice, for sure…the question is for who she is glammed up for? Jack or hoping to meet a cute guy through Puddles? AND betcha it would be Bernice who meets a new guy.
As expected, Luann’s idea of wild and crazy spontaneous fun is yet another walk in the dog park. If I recall correctly, Sunday Luann & Bernice did this a few months ago, complete with Luann being all dressed up.
My wife had a room mate at FSU, I remember her as a liberal arts major (either sociology or psychology) and they wre not particularly close but got along okay unlike some other “Odd Couple” roomies we have all experienced. Back in the late ‘80s we used to go to the games at Doak Campbell together and we’d sit in the student section (you bought tickets when you went fulltime, it was part of your fulltime fees) and I remember the young lady reading her books. At the time I thought it was a bit dorky and some people complained a lot (at the time FSU was a top 10 club with a stacked roster and competed for national championships) that she took the seat from some real football fan (more likely someone could have bought her seat and had it upgraded for coin)…. Now as I am older I think if it makes you happy, go ahead and do it, you paid for the ticket young lady and my apologies for being rude to Sarah from Daytona…….
Bernice goes out with her best friend preparing herself to the possibility of getting bored… I can understand that Dog Parks are great only for people with dogs, but that’s still a pretty rude thing to say!!! I just hope Luann will meet Jack and Bernice will help them understand what they are for each other.
When I was first learning Unix, I had taken my son with a couple of his friends to Six-flags. While they went on the rides, I found a quiet place to read the text book I had brought with me. A friend saw me there and was not the least bit surprised.
Luann is looking mighty fabulous for a mere trip to the dog park. While Bernie is…, “smart causal?”
So Bernice is taking reading material so she doesn’t get “bored” Eh? More and More I’m thinking that Bernice will wind up being anything but. Now, either the “distraction” will be Pud getting lost, or as I mentioned yesterday, some Guy. I mentioned Jack as a possibility. But Bernice knows Jack from the time she, Nil, Luann, and the big guy went bowling and Jack busted Lu’s foot. And Bern didn’t seem at all impressed with him. And for Jack to suddenly be interested in (Or understanding) anything that Bern is reading, and Bernice suddenly taking a liking to Jack, would be, IMHO, contrived beyond belief.
Nah. It’s gotta be a new Guy. Some new Neo-Nerd who’ll all but ignore the Fab Luann, in zero right in on the “book worm plain-Jane” Bernice. Or it could even be that Skyler guy Lu met at the dog park last year. They dated once and NOTHING. It would be Ironic if the “faceless” Skyler met and fell for Bernice. THAT would drive poor Lu right up the wall.
Ah! WHO knows at THIS point? The one thing I AM fairly sure of? This arc is going into next week. And perhaps beyond. Stay well, My Dear Friends. ;)
How long have these girls beem friends? Looks like they have grown waaay apart. Luann still needs to mature and Bernice acts like an eighty year old. Not much in common any more.
I’m going to bet that more persons at the dog park will be dressed like Bern and many will be sitting on a bench reading while the dogs play. Luann will the one who stands out (which may be what she wants).
So instead of sitting in Luann’s bedroom and Luann talking to Bernice while Bernice reads and ignores her, now they’ll be sitting in the dog park while Luann plays with Puddles and talks to Bernice, and Bernice reads and ignores her.
We need a zingy plot twist – soon. How about BERNICE meets a guy in the dog park. And Bernice begins inviting him to her room. Luann may not enjoy the thin walls at that point.
All three of Bernice’s responses could be used when a male finally asks her for sex. First panel is him asking if she wants to do it. Second panel is the same as Luann’s question. Third panel is the guy saying she is pretty and how should they start.
There was a young man of East Anglia / Whose thoughts were a tangle of ganglia. / His mind was a webbing Of Freud and Krafft-Ebing / And all sorts of other new-fanglia.
A psychiatrist fellow named Jung, / Asked his wife out to dinner while young. / But his wife had enjoyed / a luncheon with Freud, / And Jung felt that his ego’d been stung.
Just because the dog park is mentioned does not mean we will see the dog park soon. Especially in an end of the week strip. Crepes were mentioned a few days ago, but we have not seen any crepes.
so lets do something fun translates to walking the dog? sheesh. more like luann just wants to cruise Jack or some other guy hence she’s wearing heels instead of common sense sneakers. just leave Bernice to her studies , shes not interested in your type of fun Luann.
One does NOT walk a dog at the Dog Park. You let your dog off the leash so they can run around and play with other dogs. The owners usually sit and talk to each other while keeping an eye on their dogs. It is similar to taking small children to the park to play with other kids. The parents sit and talk to each other.
Yesterday Luann said she wanted to have fun. Dog park? Maybe you need to have a dog for that to be fun. I thought they were going to go clubbing. I like Jack and was thinking Luann and Jack would connect. Up to now they like each other but it hasn’t gone into the romance phase. When things started to heat up between Luann and Gunther I thought finally they would get together. But, it went nowhere. Just as Luann always liked Aaron Hill Gunther always liked Luann.
Imagine Luann reading that book title in the last panel sarcastically, and this strip is really funny. Reminds me of this book report in a ‘Calvin and Hobbes’: ‘The Dynamics of Interbeing and Monological Imperatives in ’Dick and Jane’‘: A Study in Psychic Transrelational Gender Modes.’
Well, Bernice, if you go somewhere expecting to be bored, you’ll probably be bored. But if you go expecting to have fun with Puddles, you just might have some fun with Puddles! I do think Lu’s shoes are a bit over the top, not really good on grass. Still, I’m interested to see what’s going to happen at the dog park. Let me look in my crystal ball: I see…dogs. Maybe mud. Maybe a muddy Bernice. Maybe a muddy Bernice and a very apologetic (and good looking) guy. After that, the crystal kind of goes hazy… Bets, anyone? (no, not her)
Sunday’s ‘toon: in an unusual move, the arc continues with Luann, Bernice and Puddles at the dog park, and a big, cute but clumsy golden retriever smashes into them while trying to catch a frisbee in the first frame. Second frame: a big, cute but clumsy blond-haired guy helps Luann and Bernice to get up and tries to apologize; Bernice angrily tells Luann to ’go play with your friend’.
Third frame: Bernice sits on a bench and tries to reorganize the bookbag, but the heavy book bag causes the bench to dump Bernice on her head. Unusual fourth frame: Bernice is lying silently on her back, not breathing. Will Luann return in time to save her former best friend’s life again with CPR? Or —
Monday: Toni and Brad announce to Nancy and Frank that they have both been assigned to help fight the Whale wildfire that started outside Los Angeles on August 15…
Didn’t Luann make a few much more interesting friends a few story arcs ago? Out of old friends, I wish they’d kept Delta, Knute, and Crystal and sent Bernice off to the University of Nebraska.
