I thought Bernice thought that chicken wasn’t good enough for the likes of her yesterday, but I was wrong—maybe. Next time she might think it’s no good. After all, she hasn’t really seen it yet. And the guys haven’t really seen her Halloween costume, er, dress.
I really am not sure how LuAnn and Bernice are still friends. It seems as if they have both grown and formed their own thoughts on life, in completely opposite directions.
How about something interesting for a change… Like a big earthquake or a mudslide? Or a massive riot? Something better than just watching paint dry all the time.
All this preamble about Bernice makes me think she’ll end up meeting a new love interest, or seeing one of the guys she has or had an interest in, maybe even Zane. I’d honestly like it more if this happened to Luann, not to Bernice. While I think Luann and Jack are endgame, I wouldn’t mind if she’ll have some more brief, playful experience before her next serious relationship. Also, kudos for Luann in supporting her really annoying BFF.
I don’t see how Luann will be able to make a good impression with that grouchy personal anchor in tow! Bernice’s only satisfaction in life comes from ruining other people’s good times or attacking their self-esteem and Luann should realize it. She has spent this entire outing trying to convince Bernice to participate in what was supposed to be a fun time. Time to cut that rope and sail into a brighter future!
Women who read those romance novels need to realize they are as fake as the women in porn that men watch. Most men are not going to remember your favorite flower, ask about that problem at work, notice little things you like, etc. Just like most women are not going to have pillow fights in lacy lingerie with their 3 hottest friends while the BF watches.
I find it interesting that there is a bit of a dichotomy here today:
1. Bernice IS actually being a REALIST like she says. It is true that day-to-day life is NOT like a romance novel. 2. But it is also TRUE that Bernice is nervous and hesitant about approaching the foodtruck surrounded by the basketball playing guys.
The situation is interesting to me, because both emotions can be simultaneously true for Bernice. That is one of the things I enjoy about the way the comic often unfolds….. there are often multiple thoughts/emotions/feelings being portrayed simultaneously in a character. This is a far more subtle and nuanced way to portray a character, even in a comedic comic like this is.
From a “storyboard” perspective, I suspect that the idea of the Food Truck being a chicken focused place OCCURRED after either G or K thought of the “chicken” (aka scared) comment from Luann in the story. When that line for Luann came to mind, then in order to double up on the humor, they then were able to pick the food focus for the Food Truck.
I wonder if the purpose of this arc is to:
A. Use the romance novel as a foreshadowing of a new romance for Luann or Bernice (although I still like thinking Bernice and Nil are still together….. even though she is his “muse” she can still be his girlfriend)?
B. Use the romance novel as a juxtaposition to a romance failure by Luann or Bernice?
Well Yes Maam! Coming right up! WHY does Bernice think she can order Luann to buy her some chicken? What an a$$hole!!! I’m sure if Luann got her a sandwich she would want a roll, or if Luann got her strips she would want nuggets. Bernice is toxic. Especially toxic in this story. Please kick her to the curb and out of your house Luann.
Love Bernice’s doggedly determined look in the last panel. Clearly, her expectations are not high. Which means she will be the one who makes a connection!

First thing those hoopsters will do is ask Luann how much she charges for her “services”. After all—they’re realists, too!

Whatever happened to the guy in the wheelchair (forget the character’s name) that Bernice almost married back in high school, when she was 16?
