“Look, I’d Love to stay and chat, Gunny. But I gotta go hit the gym and get in shape for the Fall, because I got my eye on this yummy quarterback named Kip! But don’t you worry! You and I are still tight “buddy-buddies” and I’ll probably need your help in math or something again! So turn that frown upside-down, Mr Grumpus! Oh! Did I tell you I got an “A” thanks to your ex-girlfriend’s help? Isn’t that wonderful? Well Toodles! – Tiffany ;)
I aced it. I predicted sometime early this week Tiff finds out that she didn’t cause the breakup, and then Gunther would give her a frame by frame leading to the L word when she fled. Then Tiff would tell him it is Bets’s issue, not his. Since she hasn’t replied to his contacts, it’s time to move on. Many of readers predict that on Saturday, Bets would come to the house and find Tiff there. Starting to look like it will turn out exactly that.
I admit that I’m relieved Tiffany sees sense, and we probably won’t have to see her torture herself for something she didn’t do. And I also admit I haven’t seen any guy wear his shirt buttoned all the way to his collar since the 90s.
Well, it’s only Wednesday. Still time for everyone to guess who the next person knocking at the door might be? Sort of like the old Dean Martin show where he never knew who was behind the door before opening it. Or, could be there will be a knock at the door on Saturday and we’ll have to wait.
From EEEEE to AAAH. Some regular commenters have praised Tiffany (G&K) for her character development and maturation, but last frame shows Tiffany is still Tiffany and it’s all about Tiffany.
Tiffany is so funny! She looks like she’s taking a step forward and two steps back, but her hug was too much a nice gesture. It can’t be forgotten by her happy reaction knowing she was not the reasons of her friends’ breakup. I’m more and more sure she will try to talk with Bets.
Tiffany was feeling very guilty thinking the break up was her fault. Of course she is relieved! That doesn’t mean she does not care about Gunther and his feelings. I think she will help him by the end of the week, by giving him good advice or showing him real friendship. Her initial reaction seems self centered, but she may come through for Gunther.
The BEST thing Gunther could do for himself is to take a shower, shave, put on clean clothes and pull it together emotionally. IF Bets shows up when he is like this, Bets will realize she did the right thing by dumping him. If Gunther makes himself the best he can be, Bets might think she made a mistake by leaving him.
If Bets shows up now, she’s going to see Tiffany there and then break up with Gunther for good.
And now that Tiffany’s ego is assuaged, she can just say “OK, well, bye!” and leave, since she apparently doesn’t really care about Gunther’s problems.
Well, here’s hoping that Tiff’s seeming callousness is just a knee-jerk reaction to finding out that she’s really not to blame for the breakup. Hopefully she’ll come around and show a bit of compassion to her friend.
It was before I started reading this comic. Didn’t Gun have a girlfriend Rosa. Didn’t he follow her overseas for a while? He was what 18? I guess he left her and didn’t feel too crushed.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. I do think though Tiff and Gun are good friends where both don’t have to be guarded with their words and they can just be open and honest with each other. If I had to guess, Tiff is going to get Gun to shave, get dressed, get his hair combed. They are going to go someplace and Bets is going to see them together and get jealous.
You know this is a character development wrapped in a relationship story crashing into the existence of a controversial character. Tiffany shows empathy, then when she finds that the relationship breakup, if there really is one, is not her fault so she concludes. A contra argument could still be made. She is relieved but the jury is out, I think, if this means she is the shallow, selfish Tiffany still. Now Bets will most likely show up though, I think that is more likely than not. If Bets shows up, given her possessiveness, and “her” shallowness, per some, it does not look good. However, I am looking for a breakthrough, for all three characters, and I doubt Bets is really going anywhere. Too huge of a character But misdirection, man is this a stage. Almost makes Biden-Putin seem simple (lol).
As I opined yesterday, I think Gunther is the real story here. In this arc, he was taken, by Bets, from studying algebra and calculus, to becoming a rejected, lovelorn person. Meanwhile, Tiffany got an “A” in a business project, in spite of Bets failed attempt at meddling.
If Tiff would have done what Bets asked for, they wouldn’t have been in a romantic meal scenario and there wouldn’t have been an argument leading to Gunther telling her he loved her.
Gosh! The Tiff haters are out today! Could not her reaction be relief that she wasn’t the cause of Gunther’s distress? Tiffany is the first person to visit Gunther in his doldrums and express her concern with a hug. Not matchmaker Luann, not empathetic Ox, not roomie Les, not helicopter mom Irma. GnK selected Tiff for a reason. Tomorrow we mat get a hint as to how this will go.
My guess is Gun will vent either anger or grief over the breakup. The key will be whether Tiff reacts in girlfriend mode or mogul mode. Also what happens when Bets suddenly appears.
Wow! Was I way off and guess hoping Tiffany really cared. Kudos to those who called it!But, when Tiffany realizes what Gunther just said, about telling Bets he loves her, Tiff may be concerned. Well, hope springs eternal and I’m hoping she really cares, even a little bit.
Just when you think Tiff has shown some maturity, she reveals her self-centered self, once again. I still hope that she will try and reconnect with Bets and help resolve her issue with Gunther.
Am I the ONLY one who does NOT think Bets will show up at Gunther’s place this week? She’s ghosted him for 3 weeks, won’t answer or return his calls. Why would she suddenly show up in person??
while it’s reasonable for Tiff to feel a sense of relief that Gunther isn’t seeing her dinner as the cause of Bets’ leaving, (that was Tiff’s first thought); she should have tempered her exuberance, not to mention hear the end of G’s sentence. Gunther isn’t in the business of casting blame; he just wants Bets back; if Tiff cannot listen to his side of things and be a source of support, then maybe she should back off. But she could help G understand Bets a bit more.
Everything would be different had Tiffany not insisted on having it all her own way with the dinner. And fine, it was Bets who just assumed they were getting pirates, but Gunther’s declaration of love was in response to her feeling like he was more supportive of his friends than of her. Just think, if Tiffany had done the pirate themed dinner Bets and Gunther would still be together. She would be joyfully posting their activities on the web and he would be at his sewing machine happily whipping up new costumes, maybe whistling a little tune and deciding whether or not to use lace trim. Maybe Tiffany needs a new dress?
I guess it’s hard for me to figure out Gunther. At a point where he thinks he has a sympathetic listener (in this case, Tiffany), his face show sadness (and self-pity) over his possible loss of Bets. But as soon as Tiffany shows her relief that she herself didn’t cause the breakup between Gunther and Bets, Gunther switches like lightening to an angry face because Tiffany is happy over not causing the breakup. Gunther — who constantly accepts being used as part of Bet’s social media postings even though it concerns him — has no ability to accept someone else being happy when he thinks they should only be concerned about him. Like I said, it’s hard for me to figure out how he can accept Bets not thinking about his discomfort with social media posts of their private life (putting her social media life first) at the same time he expects others to only think of his discomfort over losing Bets and none of their concerns…
So, to summarize, Tiff was concerned that Gunther was sad. She went to console him, and was very relieved, probably over the moon, to learn that the problem was not exactly caused by her dinner, but rather the discussion that took place afterward. No biggie here at all. No denigration of Tiffany in my opinion. Who among us have discovered that something bad happened, and are relieved to know that our actions were not the cause?
I may be overly optimistic, but I’m going to hold out hope that Tiff gets refocused on Gunther and says something like: "What? She walked? I thought she really cared for you. You’re too good for her, Gunther. I would never have done that to you, I…really care for you…I mean…I…well, you were really kind to me when I was down and…I’ve one thing to say and that’s Dammit, Gunther, I love you.
Let us hope that this is just a momentary spasm of relief for Tiffany, and that she does have some actual empathy for Gunny and his lifelong commitment to failure….
