At the end we get the fish eye view and the fancy color effect. I will have to check out the newspaper tomorrow and see how this looks in black-and-white.
Dez, you’re boring. You sound like a self help book, not a real human being. A character with no apparent flaws or conflict in any work of fiction is lazy, one dimensional writing. At least you don’t show up very often.
The moral to this strip is to simply take a deep breath and enjoy the good things you have in life. I don’t do this as much as I should and often get hooked into irrelevant debates and situations, something I strive to lessen by realizing that “Its no big deal” something my Uncle always said, that most probs go away given time and simply doing what is right….. This post is a positive one: Dez got the typical unambitious LuAnn, and changeable Bern (up or down? Who knows?) to see her point of view and enjoy a moment of harmony. Dez is a great teacher for such a young lady!
Such a beautiful message ♡. In the end, Luann has Puddles to care about, Bernice has Monstro end Dez… has Bernice, Luann and a lot of other persons, animals and vegetables. I love this strip♡.
What a sweet ending to this arc. And so very true! Being in nature and feeding our wild ones has kept me sane this year. That and baking and a lot of prayer!!!!! Also, staying in touch with loved ones even at a distance is a blessing.
Google: Relaxing Aquarium Fish Tank Sounds on youtube. The water sounds produced by aquariums provide a soothing environment that can help some people relax and fall asleep. … It seems that watching fish, and listening to the trickling water, causes the production of serotonin, which stimulates the brain to increase endorphins. This is a copy and paste from the internet.
I don’t know if Greg intended it this way, but it’s a perfect arc for the week of September 11. Remember how the simple things became very important afterwards?
What’s next? We just has Bernice moves in, then it was Cosplay Panel for giggles and grins, then Ann finally gets the boot, then Ann still gets the boot, then Ann starts to get the boot, then at home with* Brad and Toni* and the usual accomplices, then the emancipation of Nancy, then Pru gets the boot, then fun and games for all at Mooney U., then …
You know what would be nice? Luann finally having a nice connection with some good guy (whether Jack or some random new person) to not only get to disprove her loser-hood with adulting in general but because she is a good woman at heart and deserves a real relationship. She gets a lot of scorn around here some days.
Especially good art today. Your story lines are engaging too, but clean expressive lines, with balanced backgrounds, are a very large part of why I read your strip. I was similarly impressed with today’s vintage Hi & Lois. Art matters. There’s comic strip, and then there’s comic art, and you have the latter. Thank you.
It’s been a dreadful week here, what with our west coast burning due to climate change and historic windstorms, and we all feel the stress (and breathe the smoke). Thankfully, our friends in the way of the fires have gotten out safely, and almost all have homes to return to. But that coupled with the stress of the level of crimes and injustice going on nationally have drained even the most resilient of people, and a simple thing like this, a message of hope in a comic strip, soothes the soul and eases the pain. Thank you, Greg. And maybe Dez is the one who should major in counseling.
The art in today’s strip id pretty interesting. The first panel is framed as a blackout spotlight showing just the girls as if to say ‘this is timeless.’ Dez’s speech is in a small panel so that the last panel can be large and dominating. But the panel is more than the three of them finding peace in the goldfish, the foreground is a closeup of the aquarium so the black sealant of the aquarium becomes a black border for the picture, making it more solemn than just three girls looking at a fish. Greg may hate the Zebo type instructors but he really learned how to construct a emotional picture.
I like the artwork but disagree with the message. While it’s good to have hope and positivity, that has never solved a problem. We have a virus ravaging our country because some people decided to pretend it would all work out on its own.
I prefer the lesson from the movie Inside Out: you can’t ignore negative things and expect everything to be okay. It’s all right to be sad when bad things happen; it’s the first step towards making things better. Acknowledge and confront, don’t suppress and ignore.
Not to mention: how privileged is a person who has the means to just not worry about bad stuff in their life? A kid who goes to bed hungry certainly doesn’t have that option. A person on the receiving end of racial prejudice doesn’t get to just wish it away. Bernice herself was very recently homeless, so Dez’s attitude strikes me as remarkably tone-deaf.
I had a friend stay with me for a while. She decided she was moping because she needed a job. I didn’t bother to tell her that it took most people six months to find a job in my town. She came back a few hours later. She had gone to a local burger restaurant where they had told her they did not need anybody. After she chatted with them for 30 minutes, they made her an assistant manager. She was the single most positive person I have ever met.
Gotta love Dez’s positive attitude. She reminds me of a younger version of my grandmother. She was into some weird things at times, but she never met a stranger. Always positive, even if looking at something negative, she always found a positive solution. I see that in Dez, and is a great balance to Luann and Bernice.
I really like the last panel of this strip. It reminds me of the times when I used to go to the pet stores with my mom and my sister. I always really liked looking at the fish in the aquariums, even though we never bought one. So that panel takes me back to a simpler, more innocent time…

Perhaps this week’s message of “Hope,” encompasses not only all the ‘Negative’ that’s happened in 2020, but also, what happened 19 years ago.
Maybe there IS some Hope left in the World after all……, ;)

Quite a twist, no?
Admit it: How many of you thought this was going to be a Jack-and-Bernice arc?
Not that it won’t happen.
Just that it didn’t happen this week.
And I’d be surprised if we see these three next week.
