Here’s a joke the nuns will LOL on!! I just heard the Pope has just announced that it is okay now to kiss a nun! as long as you don’t get into the habit!!
I actually had a few nuns come to my standup presentation once. I told them, “I’m sorry I had to have you searched as you came in, Sisters. But I went to Catholic School, and we wanted to make sure you don’t have any rulers on you.”
Why do people think Nuns (and Priests) don’t have a sense of humor? They weren’t born Nuns & Priests & anyway are still people. Anyway, I do like the strip & 30 years, WOW.
Hope you’ll make mincemeat out of ‘em for many more years (that’s the holiday stuff in a jar from Borden’s brand Nun-such. Like a few nuns, it has been known to have brandy and rum in it).
Happy 30th anniversary!! Love your creations, just ordered your 365 day calendar & can’t wait to enjoy!! Thank you, keep us laughing… & laughing…& laughing …
Keep ‘em coming Mr. Wiley. Was on a construction site once, in Maine in fact, that was a new building for a group of nuns. We were directed to watch our behavior and language while on site “they are everywhere” so as not to offend the client. Was climbing around in the roof truss’ taking dimensions and slipped, jamming a knee into a vee of wood. Was about to verbally vent but, as I looked down at my stranded leg I saw, beyond it, the face of a nun looking up at me. Quiet smile on her face, hands clasped in front of her. Had to bite my tongue really hard….
On a separate note, in the first panel I visualize an even larger fish just behind the chef, who makes tantalizing bait.
In the second, I am reminded of when I was stationed in Mildenhall AFB England in 1960’s. Mort Sahl, known for his dry social commentary, made his debut before a live audience at the Palladium on the biggest English tv variety show at that time. He blew it. He used the term the queen in his first line. In the British Empire that’s something that just isn’t done, you know, old boy. The audience froze and remained silent for most of his act. Must have been one of his hardest performances ever.
30 years?? Why does it seem like only last week? We can’t be getting that old!
No matter … I have been a fan, follower, and faithful reader for all those years and have enjoyed every one of your often thought-provoking and always funny and well-drawn works.
I started working as a nurses’ aide in 1976. It was at a nursing home whose sign said “Sisters for the Aged and Infirm”. In my youthful naivete, I though " Oh, I will be working side by side with nuns who are helping the elderly!" Quickly learned the truth- none of the nuns worked directly with the elderly. We aides did all the bathing, dressing, toileting or taking care to make sure those who were incontinent were clean and dry. We fed those who could not feed themselves. Did the lifting of those who had lost mobility. Meanwhile, I have to say my first encounter with a nun was seeing her and a housekeeper reading Tarot cards with the housekeeper. Another nun was regularly seen leaving to play tennis with a priest. We were fortunate to receive a hot meal at lunchtime break at this facility. But we often passed a private dining room where the Mother Superior and the priest dined on lobster and other expensive meals.Along with my experience as a child, when I was expected to attend Mass just because my mother was Catholic, the job at the nursing home, and the exposure of pedophile priests, I do not believe in the Catholic Church anymore.
Garry Trudeau’s artwork improved over the years; Wiley Miller’s started out pretty damn good to begin with.
Randall Munroe makes no pretenses to artistry at all, Stephan Pastis has demonstrated mainly that he’s a master of copy-and-paste and Zip-A-Tone®, and Thaves is just … well, Thavian.
But each and every one of them has a unique wit, and they all make our lives richer.
The Non Sequitur cartoon right after Comedy Hell, and right before Chef Food-Chain (they originally appeared in reverse order) sports the first Wiley Bear.
Ah, the true alpha predator. And I get the second one, but I bet if you knew that was your audience with enough time in advance, you could have them in stitches.
