WTG Luann! You’ve finally left Bernice speechless. Enjoy the snark-free moment as long as you can. ;)
So will Luann actually go through with the skydiving or cancel at the last minute? I could almost see her faking spraining her ankle, so she can get out of it, and not look like a chicken.
.
Is this the end of the arc or will it continue on Monday?
Skydiving. . . Something that Luann is at least willing to try. But not “We must stick to the itinerary!” Gunther. More from Bets and Gun: Adventure Awaits:
Really, really hot (the climate in the story must have aligned with the real-life heat wave from this summer). Not so metaphorically hot between Bets and Gunther. Still, Gunther wishes to be at home, in nice, comfortable surroundings (to be honest, I’d be itching to be in comfortable surroundings, too, but that’s beside the point). He has this fantasy of Bets being home and coming over to watch movies together, like they always have.
But Bets still wants to continue the on-the-road experience, still wants to follow her fans and update them on the goings-on. Still loves Gunther, but, God, she’s annoyed at her boyfriend being so uptight. Can’t he just relax for once?! Apparently not, since he still insists on calling Dear Old Mom, even though he’s on a trip where he’s supposed to grow up some more.
What direction are they going in? Not the same one, that’s for sure.
Actually, Bernice was in error to describe the study session as ending in skydiving. It actually began there, due entirely to Tara’s intrusion. But Luann didn’t correct the description to say that there was any subsequent productive discussion of the assignment; so we may infer that the session was worse than a waste of time unless Luann actually does engage her imagination to re-write the episode as occurring differently — perhaps even contrasting alternative scenarios as having spun off from various images evoked by comments made by character participants in it. Why, in one scenario perhaps Tara could be envisioned as sprouting wings and flying away out of some nearby window. Now, that’s imaginative!
In a way, dating Piro would be like skydiving. She knows next to nothing about him, and there’s risk associated with it. She might run if he actually got interested in her. I’m guessing she’ll try skydiving, and it will turn out OK, but she’ll learn she’s not that interested in risk-taking activities and might back off on Piro.
This is a perfect ending for the week. Bernice is speechless, and Luann actually has something planned. Will she go tandem, fall out of the plane but pull the ripcord in time, or will she chicken out and never get on the plane? I think she will be scared to death but go tandem. Now, if she were jumping at Lodi, all I could say is OMG NO!
Wow. She sure looks excited, and happy about going skydiving. /s
It’s what she wanted, right? And she’s so happy about spending a chunk of her limited discretionary income to partake in an activity that will bring her so much enjoyment, right? And now she has an assured part of the Kool Kids Club!
So why does she look like she’s headed to the execution chamber?
Good! Luann just made the reservation and her decision to try skydiving is already bringing a hugely positive change to her life. Bernice is unable to make sarcastic comments! Imagine how even greater the positive effect will be after she parachutes in together with Tara and Piro. Maybe, if she starts following the cousins in all their adventures, Bernice will no longer be able to make her poisonous “witty” comments… It would be worth a try! But I’d like to see Luann more enthusiastic about skydiving.
I may be the only one, but I found Bernice’s comment hilarious (and self-aware), as was Luann’s sardonic response. It’s typical of the back-and-forth banter between longtime besties that these two often display. Well done, G&K!
When is Luann going to realize that pursuing Piro is a waste of her time? He likes to do things that she has no interest in and he lets himself be managed by his female cousin. He is hard to talk to and never really engages in a conversation. On top of all that, he has shown he has absolutely no interest in her. She’s not in love with him, I don’t think she even likes him all that much after today, and it is INCREDIBLY STUPID to let yourself be talked into spending your money on something like skydiving just to impress a boy that you’re not even dating. Why does she insist on banging her head against the wall? Looks like Karen is copying too much from the Bachelorette. I guess bungee jumping will be next, or rappelling down a cliff face.
Bernice was smart to do a “pass” on this Piro character. I am so impressed with the boys that are Luann’s age in this comic. We’ve go Piro, a poor fragile little lamb, Kip, the jock with the weird girlfriend, Gunther, the mama’s boy, Les, the gamer, Nil, the strange artist, Jack, the ambiguous exercise fanatic. Ox, the meathead. Not one valid candidate for a healthy dating relationship in the bunch! Are G&K incapable of actually creating an interesting, normal male character??
I’m disappointed. I expected Bernice to say something like “I am typically quite loquacious with my clever, razor-sharp repartee; however, in this particular unguarded moment, I find that I am strangely bereft.”
I’ve made over 1400 jumps and I don’t think Luann should jump. Nobody should ever jump to make somebody else happy. She could go to watch and support her friends and that should be just fine.
She’ll do the tandem dive where they hook you to an instructor. He ears will whistle all the way down, and she’ll get Charlie horses in both legs when she hits the ground. But what fun!
Piro seems like a nice kid but I’d be really careful around the person who got Luann fired from her teaching job by bringing her archery equipment into the classroom after she was told no. She does not respect boundaries but insists on her own quite loudly.
Calvin: “Mom, can I learn to parachute out of a plane?” “Why don’t you just play chicken on the railroad tracks? That’s a cheaper way to toy with death, I’m sure.” “Mom’s so practical!”
Well… the operative words here are “I’m booked”. Luann was asked as an after thought and in order to remain part of the group she’s going along with it, no doubt without a lot of excitement and with some apprehension. I think Bern senses all of this. Unfortunately Luann is always the “follower”. Tara is the initiator, the adventurist, the go-getter; somewhere in between is Piro.
She is completely speechless, except she keeps talking. I have two friends, both skydivers. One did it to help her get over all her other fears. And the other is a Total Tara—a thrill seeker. She told me the worst part was the feeling of not being able to breathe as you descend. She had to keep putting her hand up to her nose to get a breath. But she loved the experience.
So Luann has the money to go skydiving, but a few months ago she had to whine at her dad like a hungry dog (literally too, as she got the idea by looking at Puddles) because she wanted a pizza for dinner?
I suspect (and could be wrong) that Luann will be the only one of the three who will actually jump. Tara may get cold feet at the last minute, and Piro? Who knows? Luann will end up with a guy, and who that is will be anyone’s guess.
I finally got to read my Bets and Gun Adventure Awaits book. I have to say Karen nailed it! She really got into the heads of both of these two characters and showed exactly why they have always been attracted to each other so much and why things turned out the way they did. An amazing summer with a bittersweet ending. Bravo! Now, let’s see Luann get inspired to write at this level!!!!!!! Both Bets and Gun have some growing up to do but I’m really glad they found each other. I think they both learned a few things about relationships and what it takes to have a successful one.
When my wife was a biology professor in college, she had a grad student who announced he was going skydiving. Karen insisted that he turn in his thesis first. He did, jumped successfully, and got his degree!
I mentioned this in a comment a few days ago, but if things are the same in the States as they are here in Canada, they don’t just let you skydive without any lessons first. They make you take a safety course first. And it’s expensive.
“Yay” for a speechless Bernie. Yay also for a skydiving Luann, who looks so glum, it’s as though she has already crashed and burned (as in “why would anyone jump out of a perfectly fine flying airplane?”)….

You could say that her study session has hit rock bottom.
Or that it fell faster than her career working with kids.
Or when it comes to Luann studying, she’s flying high with her head in the sky.
I know I should probably quit while I’m ahead, but with me, the sky’s the limit.
I guess I should make like a plane and take off.

But will we actually see Luann go skydiving, or will this end up being another “pool party” non event?
And since this arc seems to have run it’s course, will it be Tiffany and the new roommate or Gunther and his crocodile tears?
